How Soccer Is Destroying America

Lol the english did not invent baseball and american football. The rules and growth of the sport matter not the origin.

Football is based on rugby and baseball is nearly exactly like a game played by women in England in the 1800's. Sadly, the bribes for sex have been left out of modern baseball.

Basketball was invented by a Canadian

So Jeans are a German invention then?

I respect the hell out of soccer but let's be real...

Americans don't care that much about it because they invented two sports that are more fun to watch (football/basketball) and another for people who like chewing tobacco (baseball).

In your opinion. Football, Basketball, and Baseball are boring as shit to me. Nothing but commercial breaks non stop for the first couple especially.

Some once told me soccer is a lot like a harem anime. It goes on for hours, nobody scores, and if you dare dismiss it, you’ll be bombarded by a million fans who insist that you “just don’t get it”.

But on topic: While IÂ’ll agree America cares more about soccer than it once did, it wont become a full-on thing until we will a WorldCop. Sure weÂ’lll have to deal with a sudden surge of fair-weather fans if that happens but only the national pride it instills(USA! USA! USA pwned your shitty team!, etc), will prompt the next generation of genuine fans.

As I said just because the origin of the sport came from england doesn't mean the modern versions were invented there. Come on..Don't be obtuse.

No, it will just be like the Olympics, where every 4 years everyone pretends to be interested in these dull-ass sporting events that they would gladly turn off if they were on TV any other day of the year. National pride just seems to entice people into even the dullest things.

Soccers fucking up my life. When someone asks me about that football game I got no idea if they're talking about the NFL or MLS..

;_;

This is the end people.

Another batshit insane piece from the same writer: Germany’s Crushing Inequality Works on the Soccer Field

Good competition isn't about equally matched teams. Just look at Bayern Munich's dominance, which shows how a Darwinian approach to sports can attract fans.

Don’t let Europeans self-righteously lecture you about inequality in America—especially not Germans. If you compare the American and German professional “football” leagues each society considers truly important, you quickly arrive at a startling conclusion: Germans are far more tolerant of inequality than Americans.

Edit: He's a vicepresident of the New America Foundation. Take that as you will.

Soccer will be a massive sport in America in 10 years. Maybe even fewer. It is inevitable at this point. Personally I don't like the sport, but i'm no one. People have talked about it and McDonalds has promoted it more in the last 3 years than in the previous 20. Kids have always played it, and the older generation who doesn't care are becoming less relevant. It's really fascinating. I grew up in the era where this seemed impossible. My default mind space is still that no one cares about it in this country, but there is strong evidence to the contrary.

makes total sense. I approve.

thats what mls dorks have been saying since early 2000's. Wishful thinking overall...but Im sure in the next 200 years it'll be popular. Count on it.

Sweet tears of all Football haters.
May the Spain x Holland match teach you about why people like the sport so much.

I know it's my opinion, but it's an opinion shared by a substantial percentage of American citizens. If Americans thought soccer was more fun to watch than basketball, football, or even baseball, then soccer would have higher viewership than each of those sports...

So basically what you're saying is Chris Marker directed 12 Monkeys.

The English invented football and baseball, and a Canadian invented basket ball as a game for children.

As I already mentioned - actual thread readers might have noticed this - Naismith was a dual citizen by the time he invented basketball. The sport was commissioned by his American supervisor at a Massachusetts YMCA. By the time "basket ball" came into existence, your boy Naismith was considered a Canadian-American.

I knew a Frenchman that didn't enjoy wine. Therefore all French people don't drink wine.

It wouldn't be wise to extrapolate the actions of 314 million people based on the proclivities of a single person.
He seems to imply that eating cheese is somewhat weird and unusual in America though. As opposed to the "cheese-eating kids in Normandy", where "cheese is a an obsession".

The only thing this article proves is how ethnocentric Americans still are.

The piece flips back and forth between praising and condemning soccer. The title is sensationalist as all hell and makes zero sense to boot. I don't see how America adopting soccer more broadly and eventually kicking ass at it would be a problem for the country.

America will totally succumb to soccer (excuse me, football like it should be called), there's only so much resistance they can put up and with the changing demographics it will be sooner rather than later.

It wouldn't. America needs to stop shoving its head up its own ass and start taking influence from the rest of the world, instead of thinking that its giving the world a pulse.

Not until they get rid of the offside rule.

Soccer will never be the #1 sport in America. There's too many sports tied to the culture of certain regions and the stigmatized soccer will never be able to top those sports. Having said that, the MLS has vastly improved in the last five years and I wouldn't be surprised if MLS gets almost as popular as NASCAR has in the next ten-fifteen years.

Soccer's really boring to watch. 90 minutes for a handful of shot opportunities, most of which end up way over the goal?

I'll watch women's soccer, but that's mostly because I find some of the female players (Alex Morgan, Hope Solo) physically attractive and it's enjoyable to watch the female body in motion. Maybe that makes me a bad person, I dunno. It is what it is.

Football is for little kids to run around the field and feel like they are accomplishing something. They move on to real sports when they get a bit older and want to show off their actual individual skills~

(: Hiya rest of the world (:

Soccer isn't fun to watch. It's diving and flopping every minute. I rather watch a sport that doesn't fake injuries.

The fact that flopping is entering hockey is pissing me off.

These posts are fun to laugh at. But the first two posts are pretty lame which makes it even funnier.

Not until they get rid of the offside rule.

Offsides is fine. It's the incredible amount of poor sportsmanship, and the fans seemingly acceptance of it. Dives left n right, dramatic grabbing of whatever body part made the slightest contact in hopes of a call. It's ridiculous. Whatever regulatory body should be penalizing players after the match for such obvious bullshit. It slows the game down and makes it difficult to watch. Why aren't people booing that shit? Aren't the teammates pissed off that they have to chase down the ball because one of their guys is just rolling around on the ground?

France my ass. Reads like a disgruntled Spain supporter.

Ha!

I'd care about soccer if the grown ass men players did not roll on the ground for 2 minutes when they get tapped on the shoulder then pop right back up when they realize the ref/fans realize they are being a little bitch boy over nothing and are not going to penalize for nothing. Once or a certain player, sure fine, every fucking game that gets played... what else is on.

Yeah, I agree with this two. Honestly, I'm starting to notice more diving in Hockey and American Football that is starting to cause me to lose interest in those sports as well...

There's barely anything happening during american football match and with basketball the scores go into dozens, sometimes even over hundred, so there's no real emotions when watching. With real football every goal has huge value so there's plenty of emotions when the players even fail to score it, but got close.

How is American Football fun to watch? Its mostly ads.

Do Americans really not enjoy/watch soccer/football? Here in Canada it's a pretty big sport. I played starting when I was 5 and only stopped playing in leagues when I started university. I've watched it for years. EA's FIFA video games are super popular here too.

America being ignorant to soccer kind of blows my mind. The article being bad satire aside, of course.

Entirely subjective. To me, those are the most boring sports to watch. Yes even golf is more entertaining.
