How to Install a Hard Drive in a Playstation 4, HDD vs SSD (Video)

We need a test of that Seagate 1TB SSHD hybrid drive everyone is buying. That seems like the best solution if it delivers near SSD speeds.

The Seagate 1TB SSHD has been tested up against the WD Scorpio Black 750gb on the PS3 and the WD came out in front.

EDIT: But we've got higher spec SATA this time around.

I think you mean Caviar Black, the Scorpio Blue is the slower one.

I have the 750GB Caviar Black in my PS3, it's pretty fast, and quiet.
I wish they made a 1TB, but I just bought the HGST one for the PS4, hopefully it's reliable.

There's no way it will. The platter is 5400rpm and there is only a limited amount of solid state memory to work with in a hybrid drive.

Is it possible to have 2 hard drive installed at the same time? If not, how do you do a data transfer to get your current system state onto the new hard drive?

Nice that looks super easy. Now to find an sshd. Any suggestions?

If you're determined to get a Hybrid drive, get last years Seagate Momentus XT 750GB. The platter on that drive is 7200rpm. Seagates newest generation only has 5400rpm platters on their 1TB drives unfortunately.

Does a 10 second difference really make this worth it?

Obviously, whether or not it's "worth it" depends on the person, but having installed SSDs on my PC, I can say that regular hard drives are frustratingly slow by comparison. It's a very noticeable difference. Whether or not it's going to matter as much for the PS4 remains to be seen, but for someone who is concerned with maximum performance on a game console, SSD is definitely the way to go.

My youtube Channel with go live around November 17. @techbwoys.

I will be picking up my launch system tomorrow at midnight and I will be installing the hybrid drive. I have used them in my MacBook Pro's and they work great and are fast and carry the best cost per storage and byte value.

You say this as if it will only be faster on the bootup once?
Games will be faster every time something needs to load, and games are the number one activity you'll be doing. It's going to make the experience for the life of the system much more pleasant.

That's genius. Did Cerny come up with that by himself or did he need help?

Kutaragi must be rolling in his grave.

Not a problem.

I just ordered this very drive tonight lol

I think its the best dollar value!!!
I did it on my own accord but it's definitely a good drive. 64mb cache as well.

Keep in mind that the drive you linked is 5400rpm. The Seagate Momentus XT that has been recommended around here is 7200rpm.

The cache is lower on these but it is a slightly faster drive. I have no regrets on the one I got thought considering the price.

Too bad it is so expensive. 2x the speed could make a huge difference in loading different areas of a game, in an rpg for instance.

So much this. These things surely only cost a few cents/pence/decimal currency unit of your choice. I can't believe this is even an issue. Hell if you can't afford those then just wad up a bit of paper and tape it to the bottom.

As far as HDD replacement is concerned, do we know whether there's any way to transfer data? Like, if I get my PS4 on launch day and start playing it and then next month I want to get a bigger hard drive or whatever, can I do that without losing my stuff?

you can transfer save data to usb or cloud save it. can't do it with games, but they install in seconds, then background cache everything while you play so it's not an issue.

Spending more than the price of the PS4 on an SSD drive is insane. I would love to see benchmarks for 7200rpm drives as there faster than standard drives and are cheap.

I'm very tempted to get a 256gb SSD and just be really good with housekeeping for a year or so until prices drop

I'll just wait and see how much difference a SSD makes in the games themselves before I decide on dropping as much on a SSD as I spent on the console itself.

Why couldn't they equip the console with SSD from the get-go? Surely, ordering a couple of million SSD-drives would net you SOME discount from your prefered manufacturer?

That's what I have done. Best of both worlds for us that cannot afford a SSD.

Having the ability to upgrade your hard drive is major with this gen and its absurd game sizes. I no Xbone doesn't support it but I hope someone tries and sees what happens or Microsoft does another 180 and supports it. I'd love to throw a 3/4TB in both of these.

Replacing the Xbone hard drive will be easy as long as their drive firmware supports (or is hacked to support) larger capacity drives. It doesn't use any kind of proprietary drive. Only problem is you would void your warranty.

It would be much more beneficial to spend that money on a better CPU/GPU combo. Even 500 GB SSDs are well over $200.

The 3rd Gen Seagate SSHD (5400 rpm) has been shown to be faster than the second gen 7200 rpm Momentus XT SSHD in benchmarks:

In the StorageMark 2010 Gaming Mark Capture, the Seagate Gen3 really shined. It offered performance 53.8% higher than the Momentus XT 750GB, leading the pack of 2.5-inch consumer platter-based drives.
