**PS3 Picture**

Love it or hate it, it's had a massive effect on the technology world due to blu-ray etc.

:lol I hope Sony pays you for being on your knees.

Not really. Back then we knew the difference between right and wrong. People had values and after the epic battle between good and evil America became the greatest country in the world.

I'm not American, so your argument falls a little flat. Half a decade of the world trying to tear itself apart is pretty fuckin' awful. Multiple Atomic Bombs were dropped, killing millions. Then it opened the door for communist Russia to take over half of war-torn Europe, the effects of which are still rippling through much of the continent.

Nothing that's happened in this decade has come even close, even 9/11 and the war on terrorism.

The wars and terrorism. (Though that will overlap with the next decade with Afganistan)
Economic failure, perhaps a clear indication of the stupidity in "leave-it-alone" capitalism.
China's rising importance on the world stage.
The energy crisis.
Green movement.
The internet and technology:
Lots of free information
An effective way to get around censorship (See: China's internet population and WikiLeaks)
The Streisand effect
The birth of easy piracy
The attempts to control the internet with the excuse of fighting piracy.
The increase in free stuff (Google)
Easy to get media (overlaps with above point) (Hulu, Last.fm, Pandora, Spotify...)
Old media staying important and being available. (Overlaps with above point)
Easy archival of old stuff.
Simple way to publish your own media.
Mass communication's popularization
"Social" media (Twitter, Facebook, MySpace...)
Really powerful computers becoming available to everyone
The iPod.
Mobile platforms trying to become important as "normal" computers.
Easy GPS navigation.
Netbooks and lightweight OSes.
Open-source awesomeness. (Firefox!)
Linux finally becoming more popular (Ubuntu in particular)
Internet shows and media starting to become just as important as stuff on TV and radio.
The death of "regular" news.
Increasing distrust in reliability of pictures and video, due to increasing availability and ease of image and video editors
eBooks' increasing popularity (Kindle, Nook...)
Internet and computers starting to increase in importance in developing countries
The increasing acceptance and importance of video games in the mainstream
The use of the internet in movements (Anon's Scientology protests)
The beginning of Stem-cell organs
The beginning of Hydroponics and Aeroponics
The beginning of in vitro meat.
OLED flexible screens
...and a lot more other stuff that I've probably missed.
And of course, the LGBT movement.

Probably for the ipod. 9/11 and Obama will most likely be some what remembered later on too.

Obama will probably be remembered with the 2020s.

Oh yeah, and this is the "Naughties" (lol pun)

I hate to be pedantic,
(actually I love it)
but the 00's won't end until December 31, 2010. When you count to ten, you start counting at 1 and go through 10, you don't start at 0 and end at 9.

Web 2.0, 9/11 and other Bush-related failures, war and global warning, IMO.

Personally, this decade was awesome. Generally though, I think not so much; hopefully in a few decades they will be regretting the wars and pollution and global warming and general disregard for human rights in this decade. That is, unless what's been done during the 00's already doomed the next few decades and we don't have much time left.

Also, it's a shame I can't say space exploration. I must be the only one who thinks that's a priority. There's been advances (water on the moon, mars exploration, additions to the ISS, etc), but nowhere near where we should be.

War/ 9/11
Internet
iPod
Video Games
Michael Jackson

Certainly not music, and probably not movies. Shit decade is shit.

We don't call it "the 91s" or the "61s" for a reason, you know

What reason is that?

There's no year called "0 A.D." in the Gregorian calendar for a reason, you know.

So someone born in 1990 could say he was born in the late 80's?

Everyone in 20 years time is going to be talking about going to Muse gigs the same way that old hippies now go on about going to see the Grateful Dead back in the 70s and 80s.
Damn fucking right.

War, war, terrorism and war. Probably a lot of Web 2.0 stuff as well.

Overall, I don't think people will look fondly at the decade.

I think (hope?) the decade will be viewed as a real low point, from which we came up from in leaps and bounds.

I'm pessimistic about this scenario though.

And 8 years later, the industrial design and software is as shit-poor as on Day 1.

I've been alive during the 70s, 80s, 90s, and 00s, and this is by far the shittiest decade ever. Everything has sucked ass this decade. Shitty music, shitty movies, shitty clothing styles and hairdos, plus all the bad shit that's happened not only in the U.S., but around the rest of the world. Just a terrible fucking decade all around, from beginning to end.

It makes sense for centuries and milleniums, but for decades it doesn't.

This decade was awesome. The Iraq war might have sucked, but not anywhere near as bad as most of the 20th century's worst wars.

There's nothing like some good old fashioned bitter tears to brighten my day.

Upon reflection, you are correct. I was erroneously conflating it with the whole "end of the millenium" craze.

Everytime someone posts either A) a videogame console or B) some semi-popular internet term/website (see: "web 2.0") I die a bit inside.

I honestly doubt most people have ever even heard of web 2.0, let alone will remember the term years from now. Who gives a shit, really?

Middle East wars. Obama. 9/11. The 2004 Spain train bombing and other terrorist attacks. Those will be in the history books and will be known for years and years.

Well, at least you're conceding. We've hammered this out in many threads in the past, but to reiterate to everybody who might not yet agree:

This decade = 2000-2009. The millennium started in 2001, the decade started in 2000. That's how it goes. Otherwise, 1990 is a part of the 80s, which is dumb.

The 00s will be looked-upon as "The Good Old Days."

We complain about economic instability, increasing fuel prices, Bush, boomerang kids, shrinking groceries, global conflict, yadda yadda.. Pssht! This decade will be remembered fondly.

Most likely by these last few years. Everyone will most likely over look anything before 2007 in a decade.

That's a really pessimistic thought, I really hope not.

No worries, plenty of wars to fight over oil, water, resources and some rocks in the ocean in the 21th century!

Maybe some of the smaller things, but nobody is gonna be overlooking 9/11 when talking about this decade.

You're mixing up your decades and centuries.

Counting down centuries will naturally start at 1 because there is no real "year 0". Decades aren't held back by this limitation because they aren't being progressively counted down, so they start at 0. This decade is 2000-2009, this century is 2001-2100.

2010 marks the start of the next decade.

The death of Michael Jackson
The presidency of Barack Obama (or more aptly, a non white American president)
The iPod (and by proxy, the death/reformatting of the music sales industry)
The maturation of the internet.

Pretty much nothing was bigger than these 4 things.

It will be looked back on as the INTERNET DECADE.

How many of you were posting on forums in 1999?

I was, on aol.

I think I started using the net in 1997, i remember always search for alicia silverstone :lol, and playing diablo 1 on battle.net

so for me the internet seemed "cooler" and more mysterious back in the late 90s, i remember everything being a dark webpage, with obnoxious animated gifs, and everyone "south parking" themselves, and reading wrestling websites.

i think I started reading gaf in 2000 and posting in 2001

maybe its nostalgia but I liked gaming better in the 90s also although this gen had the birth of the gta sandbox, thats about it though.
