How will the PS4 and Xbox 720 controllers look like?

Haha, what I'm saying is that a motion controller with optical tracking really does have a lot of similarities to a mouse, just with a different grip and an optical reference point instead of all the movement being relative to a flat surface. The functionality is absolutely there.

Yep, its there. We can only pray that if they implement it as the primary control type, that they do it right.

edit: people need to read and re-read their own thread title before they post it. If they don't, how will they look like?

I would be pissed if Sony ever changed the placement of their analog sicks. The 360 controllers feel so uncomfortable with them staggered the way they are.

The only thing I feel they need to change is the L2 & R2 triggers. They just press themselves sometimes when I set it down and my fingers slide off if I hold it too low.

Oh and that too!! I can't count the times I have thrown a grenade right after spawning for the first time in UC3 because I sat my controller in my lap, chair, bed, my legs, wherever I'm sitting. Hate the L2 R2 triggers with passion.

Actually, I thought of a good asymmetrical design, put L1 where L2 is and place L2 way lower ans slightly to the middle. Hire me someone!

Same. I dislike 360 controller for that very reason, Although I'd prefer the sticks to be more like PSx controller before they released the Dualshock.

I for one, want the sticks to be the way they are. When I've played for longer periods on Xbox, my thumbs are always sore due to the concave design of the sticks. Unlike some people on this thread, I've never had problems with thumbs slipping with the PS3 convex sticks.

360s stick placement is no good because it limits your ability to press L1/R1 at the same time with your left hand, unless you are born with a claw. That plus horrible shoulder buttons is why games like Mirrors Edge, Dark Souls and Vanquish are inferior to the DS3.

So the 360 pad needs a redesign while the DS4 needs quality parts. Quality shell, triggers and analogue sticks/nubs like the 360 pad and you have the best controller. Actually that onlive controller looks really good. Original DS is great too.

It's not the left stick placement that makes the bumbers awkward to use sometimes, it's the actual layout of the bumpers vs triggers altogether.

Luckily it doesn't affect many games, funnily enough, Mirror's Edge and Vanquish are two games I bought for the PS3 as opposed to the 360.

Dark Sector is another one that seems to suit the Dualshock also.

Yes, the left one is. This isn't an opinion thing. It's fine if you don't like it, or aren't use to it, but the left stick IS perfectly placed for where a persons thumb naturally rests.

The problem with the dualshock isn't symmetry. It's their placement. In an ideal world, BOTH sticks would be symmetrically placed where the left one is on the 360 d-pad. But that would make using the face buttons very awkward.

Hence, why the 360 controller is the way it is.

The Dualshock is the way it is for all the wrong reasons, and they're not design decisions.

As I said in an earlier post, I'd wager most if not all people who prefer the Dualshock are just used to it. Because I can tell you now, the stick placement is shit, regardless of whether you're use to it or not.

It's ok to like something that's a mistake, it's just better to admit it's a mistake. Makes things go more smoothly. Same way people who prefer the 360 controller still admit the d-pad is shit, because it is.

Well we're about to find out how it feels then, but I reckon trying to push the B button (Nintendo's placement of B, which is actually A for everyone else) will be a fucking bitch.
no.
first, all hands are different, some bigger some smaller, some with longer fingers, some shorter ones, some more flexible somenot so much, so no single controller is perfect ergonomicallyfor everysone.
Second, MY thumbs, in relaxed position, sit, in both controllersbetwwen analog and dpad, and i feel much more comfortable using triggers with a wider angle between my thumb and index( not sure how is it called in english). So no, i am not wrong. And it is not a matter of getting used to one, as i play both systems , and have no issues switching gamepads. And i did not play ps2 that much. So no mistakes, just different tastes, as some othersalso share preferences with me.

The difference is that you wanna put your tastes above mine
, maybe because a few internet guys like 360more that does not become universal fact.

.

I ment to say L1/L2 (LB/LT) not L1/R1. Your left thumb becomes to close to your index finger and turns your left hand into a claw if you are required to use the top buttons at the same time. Imo anyway, it feels bad.

Edit: Ya I agree that the bumper/trigger design is a large factor but if you want to keep the gunlike trigger than you have to change the stick placement, or change the shoulder buttons completely.

You can't say the PS controller stick placement sucks and that the xbox is great. The xbox doesn't even keep the sticks in the same location on both sides. Either having them high and narrow is the best option (which makes the right side of the controller shit), or having them low and wide is the best which makes the left side of the xbox controller shit and makes the PS controller the best thing ever.

You can make arguments outside of this but if stick placement is your argument FOR the XBOX you're not fooling anyone.

I want to see the return of the six-button layout, like on the Saturn and N64 controllers. I don't think that's too much for gamers to handle.

Who cares, the grip on the 360 pad is broad enough that both positions (thumb over buttons and thumb over right stick) are comfortable.

...the PS3 stick placement is so narrow that my thumbs touch when moving both sticks toward one another.

EDIT: you probably mean distance from the palm when you say wide. What you're not getting is that there are two areas on the face of a controller that should be considered primary, the area under the left thumb at rest and the area under the right thumb at rest. Like I said before, the 360 essentially provides two comfortable positions by providing a broader and longer grip. The PS3 doesn't.

And again. No.

My guess, I think they'll have a mic built-in.

Couple people have posted this.. why the hell would you want a mic built into a controller? do you want people to hear you clicking buttons? Or do you mean a wired mic..

But I can say that the PS controller stick placement sucks. Whether the sticks are in the same location on both sides is irrelevant. How do you play games where you use the left stick and face buttons on the DS3? Do you cry "my thumbs aren't at symmetrical angles!" and refuse to play? Nope.

If you take the analogue sticks off a DS3, it's essentially a PS1 controller. The PS1 controller was designed so that your thumbs would fall naturally on the D-pad and face buttons. Tacking on sticks does not change that when the rest of the design is unchanged, so the DS3 is still designed so that your thumbs are most comfortable when placed on the D-pad and face buttons, regardless of the fact that most games use one or both sticks as the primary inputs now.

Change DS4's analog to concave and release a bigger version of DS4, currently DS3 becomes too uncomfortable to hold after several hrs of play session, analog stick is literally unholdable due to the sweat, R2 and L2 have to be changed too, I doubt even SCE has an R&D for ergonomics.

And for Xbox, switch the d-pad to the Saturn one and I am a happy customer.

I hope they have a "bigger" option for the next PlayStation controller. Just make it bigger. I have big hands and the DS3 feels so small. Also, fix the triggers. Keep the analog sticks symmetrical.

PS4 will probably have DualShock 4 (some sort of Move-capable/interactable controller) and a pack-in Move set along with a PSEye 3.

the controller is probably gonna be more of a focus, although the power in the PS4 is probably going to be a sizable increase.

also, they'll probably have optical and non-optical drive versions :P

Despite all of the complaints about the DualShock's analog sticks being convex, I've never had any problems with my thumbs slipping off of them. Whatever texture they use seems to be pretty good for gripping, so I have no complaints.

Just make it bigger and fix the shitty triggers.

720 will not have a controller. YOU are the controller. (Though I expect you can buy it for CoD).

PS4 controller will get rid of FF and be shaped liked a boomerang.

It's too much to ask this with a bigger dpad and a second z button?

damn only the 360 nowadays have something vaguely comfortable

That and make the next version of Kinect like 10 times more precise if they want to keep going down that path.

The existing Kinect is limited by 360's USB bandwidth allocation. It's much more accurate on PC... 4x not 10x, though.

The sooner you guys accept the Nav and PS Move the better off you will be. That will be the default controller on the PS4.

Guess I'm not buying a ps4 until the ps5 is already 2/3 years old and the ps4 is 50$ on craigslist with the bundle of exclusives I missed.

Oh and that too!! I can't count the times I have thrown a grenade right after spawning for the first time in UC3 because I sat my controller in my lap, chair, bed, my legs, wherever I'm sitting. Hate the L2 R2 triggers with passion.

I died more from this than everything else in that game combined.

They have something like this on PC already.

one of the things I dont get about the PS Move.. why didnt they just do this.

this (especially if they both have pointers in them) = sex

gamepads (at least in their current form) are outdated designs that need to go.

Now that's more like it.

This is the kind of design I want to see for the PS4. Add a toggle switch to change between pointer/move controls or dual thumbstick controls, a transformable right thumbsick and a pair of beefy, scoopy, grippy triggers and I will be a happy man.

It would be amazing if DS4 were modular and you could switch the position of the D Pad and left analog stick. And they removed the shitty triggers and put buttons back.

1. Dual shock is "simple rumble." There's a big motor and a small motor, each on different sides of the controller.
2. 360 has exactly that.

Exactly. My hands ache using the PS3 controller. It's too small. Not to mention the obvious, but the stick layout sucks and trigger buttons... blah blah blah.

Fair?

720 controller - make it have a gyro in it, fix the d pad, make it a tad lighter and longer lasting battery life
ps4 controller - make it like the 360 controller

It doesn't look very modern (and forget about the dial), but the Jogcon is actually very comfortable:

h3450.jpg

The handles are kind of like extended and slightly wider than GCN controllers.

Perfectly fine with both keeping the controllers exactly as they are. 360 sticks are too tight and PS3 sticks a tad too loose, otherwise they're both great. 360 d-pad needs work though, and PS3 R2/L2 triggers need to be more like the real trigger add ons.

IMO the 360 controller is perfect
This is so far from true. But yeah, the controller is pretty nice save a huge issue that MS ignored the whole lifespan of the system.

Also the placement of the PS3 sticks is fine to those who play it. Both systems' stick placement is fine but I would say having offset sticks like the 360 is the more odd of the two.

Unless there is a significant addition, I wouldn't mind both controllers staying similar to what they are now. Design/shape wise, they're solid, tried and true. I'm just glad Sony didn't go with the boomerang for the PS3.

Dual Shock 3 with vita-like touch senors on the back is just fine. Although I'd like it to be bigger. Not seeing any huge reason to redesign the 360s either.

I loved my dreamcast, but that controller became flat out painful with Soul Calibur and MvC2. My thumb would end up so sore I could hardly move it.

I am of the belief that the new Xbox will continue the lineage of the Kinect only way more refined, but there will be BC compatibility with a 360 controller
