How will the Roots remake effect the current race climate?

So I mentioned to a co-worker that there is a Roots remake coming. His response...

"This is going to set them off" I said who? He said "Black Lives Matter"

This turned into a pretty good argument that branched to many topics. (He is a Fox News junkie)

So do you think the Roots remake will improve the current climate, make it worse or no change?

Did you let him know that Underground was on TV already?

And you tried to have a reasonable discussion with him about race relations?

Anyway, this isn't the '70s when there were like 3 channels to choose from. The Roots remake isn't going to have a fraction of the impact of the original Roots.

They're remaking roots?

Well won't that just store up racial tensions?

Typical liberal Hollywood. Create racial tension and discussion decades after institutional racism ended.

No. I had never heard of it. I basically asked what he thought of BLM and it turned into an attack on protesters that had burned down a Wal-Greens at some point. Essentially mad at any negative coverage by Fox.

This seems most likely and yes I try to have reasonable conversation with opposing views. At one point it got to welfare and how he thought that recipients should be drug tested. I said why, he said, because drugs are illegal. Again I said why? The illegality of drugs is a form of big government he should be opposed to and he pretty much shut down.

It's race baiting them. Slavery was 400 years ago and the liberal media just keeps reminding black people to keep them slaves to the democrats.

I just don't see the point of Roots remake, or any miniseries this year tbh, after People v. OJ. Can't see it getting topped.

It's not going to make the huge splash the original mini series did so the possibly-racist co-worker can rest easy. The original came right on the heels of the #1 Novel in the country for the better part of the year with an author that won a Pulitzer in an era where event/must-watch TV was relevant. It was also in the wake of a massive civil-rights movement and African Americans trying to find, reform, discover or just stake their claim for a cultural identity.

YOU FORGOT TO MENTION LEVAR BURTON.

It'll be broadcasting on History Channel, A&E, and Lifetime.

The people most affected by the remake will be the ones trying to find out if they even have an A&E channel.

Looks like Roots is setting off white people.

Curious to see this. It's a historical account, so they can't really "update it for modern times". I've seen Levar Burton talking it up on Twitter, and he's one of the producers, so I hope it will be good.

Found the time traveler. Please tell me about the wonders of the 2260s. Is there a unified world government yet? Have we explored beyond the Sol system? Did they ever find Obama's Kenyan birth certificate? Half-Life 3?

I hate to say it but this is probably right.

It will likely make some noise within certain circles but I doubt it garners too wide of an audience or conversation.

Its airing on 4 different networks, LIFE, A&E, HIST, LMN. Not as big if it aired on network tv, but looks like they put a bit of money behind this.

Slavery hasn't existed in the US for over 100 years, who would this set off exactly and why?
That's a loaded or rather a heavy question. The thread itself carries a lot of implications with it but the important ones being current race relations are shit, slavery itself still hasn't been unpacked and we are still dealing with its effects.

When the manage to untangle the farce that is 'western history'.

What on god's green earth does this even mean?

My understanding, as a non-specialist, is that the original was not particularly historically accurate especially with regards to Africa. They could, and I don't believe for a second they will, update it to fit the sources better.
