How would you revive Mortal Kombat?

The three things that made MK special to me were:

1. The unique and new look. (large digitized characters, dark and gritty art)

2. Being mysterious. (secret character, secret messages, easter eggs)

3. Something never really seen before and unique gameplay mechanics (fatalities, standard movesets, the uppercut)

It needs to have new examples of all three of these concepts to be a successful revival or reboot in my eyes which would be hard considering it's a lot to ask for plus Boon sucks and Tobias is gone.

SM2 would be fantastic, but they don't have anything new to add to it, because there hasn't been enough new MK lore since the last SM and what little there has been really sucks and is not near as cool.

That depends..
Shaolin Monks (1) was basically a (non-canon) sequel to MKI; taking place right after the end of the first tournament, during the MKII Outworld Tournament and ending with the defeat of Shao Kahn before the invasion of Earth in MK3; so if anything they could make a sequel that took place on Earth during the events of MK3 alternating between different locations of earth and Outworld and the merge of both.

At the same time, the planned but now canceled sequel to Shaolin Monks (called Fire & Ice) had Sub-Zero and Scorpion as the main protagonists, and it wasn't till MK4 that they ended their rivalry..and in Deception Scorpion apparently went to the "good side".

The Shaolin Monks game was made mostly of fanservice and fanwishes, and they threw in there rumors, injokes and stuff that fans always speculated..during the years so any new game (if any) doesn't need to be made entirely linked to any of the games.

Anyway..
The new MK will be revealed before this summer, so ..let's wait for "reboot ideas" till then, as said earlier the series doesn't' need a revival since it's not dead...maybe just a reboot or a remake with a new look to attract old and new fans alike.

And as said earlier also, many of the "ideas" being thrown around has already being implemented in post MK4 games (5 buttons, Unreal Engine, new artstyle, mostly 2D, etc..)..some just need to play 'vs DC Universe'.. :p

Here's another idea. Since people seem to love the 2D Mortal Kombats (especially MK2 and UMK3) the most, perhaps they should offer an improved version of Mortal Kombat Trilogy for current-generation systems. I think someone (maybe more than one person) already suggested earlier in this thread that they do something like Capcom did with Super Street Fighter II HD Remix or the upgraded Marvel vs. Capcom 2, where they spruced up the graphics and added online functionality. "Mortal Kombat Trilogy HD Remix" might actually work.

It isn't feasible to film actors to perform the moves, and I don't know whether the source video footage still exists, so you'd have to stick with the original sprites (with optional smooth filtering for HD displays). However, it would be possible to redraw the backgrounds, or perhaps even create entirely new backgrounds in the spirit of the old ones. Fix up the old glitches (MKT was great, but buggy), toss in online play with a robust lobby system (including the ability to spectate others in the room while you wait your turn, like SSF2THDR), and you just might have a winner.

I don't think Mortal Kombat needs to be a fighting game anymore.

It should be given to a competent developer to make a good action game out of it. MK Shaolin Monks was a start last gen. The world and the characters are good fodder for making a nice God of War/Ninja Gaiden style game.

What would be super badass is if there was a next gen MK Action title that went through the stories of the first 3 MK games and fleshed it out a little, allowing you to choose your character and such.. Add 2 player online co-op and some light RPG elements/upgrades.. that could be great. I know shaolin monks was kind of this already, but give us 10 or so characters to choose from. Hell, even populate the world with other players demon's souls style and have random throwdowns.

Just an idea. I just don't think that we need another not-so-good 3d fighting game when we already have the good ones we want to play, and people are just playing mortal kombat for the name anyway.
