How'd Namco mess up Tales of the Tempest?

Bebpo said:
One small touch I like is that Nicknames (or whatever they call them in English) actually mean something and give stat upgrades like equipment.

It always bugs me in the Tales games where they don't do anything at all. Then it's like "what's the point of collecting them?" Sure if you're a hardcore must-have-everything collector, but for the normal player there's no incentive to do the tasks if once you get them they are useless.

So, glad that they actually mean something here.
uh, afaik in Symphonia (and likely in most other Tales) those titles changed the height of stat increases at level up.

Errr...yeah. I'm talking about the ones that don't like Legendia and ToE/ToP.

I'd guess the standard healer stuff... Pow Hammer, some light-magic attacks, things like that.

That would kinda suck IMO. I prefer the way ToD2 handled their healers... most of them had Tier 3 spells! Hopefully Rubia has some decent attack spells so I can have her in my party, other wise I'll just spam healing items. :P

This is part of the Namco Sabotage that the company is doing to NON-SONY systems. :lol

She has indignation, ice needle, etc... within the first 2-3 hours as well :P

What a strange game. It's appears to have stupid amounts of flaws in its design, yet it's enjoyable and does certain things right. Maybe 28/40 is a correct score.

Legendia's titles have stats changes too (like equipments)...

Hmm, so maybe it's just ToE/ToP? I don't remember if Rebirth had them. I think Abyss did and Destiny 2j did.

Rebirth's titles all give permanent stat bonuses, the problem is that there's not much point in equipping them afterall save for cosmetic reasons.

Abyss seems to have stat adjustments and effects for titles, but the stupid game doesn't tell you about them. A faq lists em off, but it's pretty irritating having to refer over.

Yeah, I like the way Tempest does it:

"Combo Beginner"
+5 ATTACK +5 HIT

I know nothing about the gameplay, but I can say with certainty that the music is bloody brilliant.
Of course, I'm a drooling Sakuraba fan, so my opinion doesn't matter that much.

US date, damnit. Want want want.

sheeesh, even bebpo is saying the music is good. I thought he disliked Sakuraba Tales music more than I ... what's so special? From the stuff I heard it seems pretty typical ?

Typical but still really good to hear and the compositions are very nice. I kept humming a lot of the tracks...to me that's a good sign of a great composition.

I don't like Sakuraba's electric guitar from the 80s stuff :P Otherwise I think his compositions are always good, just not great or amazing like some of the other big shots. His music always "does the job" but I'd never listen to a soundtrack of his on its own. I've tried listening to VP1 ost a few times and everytime I just listen to track 4 "Vahalla (however you spell it)" and then skip through and listen to like 2 other tracks before turning it off.

BK1 ost was damn awesome though and Abyss is still his best Tales work. I like the town and overworld themes in Tempest a good deal (reminds me of Shimomura's KH ost), battle themes are alright.

So people who have actually played it say it's a DECENT game (which would explain Famitsus straight seven score)

It's not PERFECT, it's not Blow your mind amazing, it's not even a "great" game.

But it does have a decent story, good graphics engine despite the ugly character design, and a supposedly decent battle system and length?

Can someone summarize it's faults and good poitns more thoroughly?

As far as I can tell from what I've played:

Story - no (but I wouldn't say it's worse than Rebirth's story either :P)
Graphic Engine - Yes, as long as it doesn't do closeups of the characters.
Battle System - no (fun, but it's pretty much a joke in terms of depth/mechanics)

You know, the only thing Tempest needed to be a great portable rpg was to take all the Tales staples and NOT REMOVE THEM :P

90% of Tempest's problems are created by the removal of basic things available in every other Tales game. Ridiculously bad design decisions that really should have been spotted and fixed even before development started.

Plus someone over at Namco should've seen the movement speed on the world map and should have said "errr...fix that shit ASAP". Unless DIMPS said "But if we fix that the game will be <10 hours long and maybe more like 6" and then Namco execs said "6 hours!?!? WTF HAVE YOU BEEN DOING WITH OUR MONEY!?!!? .... .... ..... ok leave the movement speed as is."

Really? I liked Destiny 2, Rebirth, and Phantasia (this imo is second only to Legendia if not tied) much more.

Ok, Dimps got to do all the hard work while Tales Studio's only really tangible contribution seems to be the sound department (first Tales solo work by Sakuraba even, looks like they dumped Tamura after all the years).

maybe that's why this one apparently sounds so good? :D

edit: Wait, actually, I thought Eternia was the first one.

I just found this comment on my TotT video on YT.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FbWCyvgPZN4

After playing it for atleast a day (rom version), I hope you guys buy so the next installment on the DS will be better. I don't like this game. I played all of the other Tales games(except for the spinoffs) and this is terrible.

Its comparable to Tales of Legendia on mediocraty. Please buy this game when its(if)release here in North America so they can produce another(better) one.

As much as I thin YT comments are stupid, I actually agree with this. :( I want a way better Tales actually developed by a Tales Studio and not outsourced to ****ing DIMPS. Honestly, and I know people will disagree with me, I think a touch-Tales could really work - something in the vain of Mario Basketball, which I actually liked.

I'm not sure how buying the game would send any message other than "Holy crap, people really will buy anything we put the Tales name on."

Well I don't actually agree with that portion of the post, because even if this game sold a million copies Namco would still ignore the DS.

Thanks for the tip.

Seems Tempest was in Dimps hands all the time. That makes me wonder what is Team Symphonia working in.

Team Destiny -> From Rebirth to Destiny Remake (all PS2)
Team Port -> From Eternia to Phantasia to Destiny 2 (all PSP)
Team Symphonia -> From Abyss to ???

The awesome next-gen Tales game that makes Abyss look like a shallow boring game in comparison!

X-mas 2007 X360/PS3 multiplatform release w/80 hour quest, and graphics like Trusty Bell except 10x better.

Believe!

Well, I would like the same as Bebpo but well, its Namco, I guess it'll be between PS2, PS3 and Wii. Unless surprise announcement of a new PS2-Wii Tales...I think there is a really good chance they are R&D on PS3 since last year!

FateBreaker said:

No, the PSX version of Eternia just didn't mention any sound staff (and neither did the soundtracks for it). That info was mentioned only in the PSP version's staff list, and Tamura is listed there alongside Sakuraba (while no music was added/changed, so it should apply to the PSX version as well). So Tempest is indeed Sakuraba's first solo Tales work (I furthermore found it interesting that Shuji Ikegami is credited as sound director, not as sound programmer like usual).

I think we'll get to know that with ToD PS2 in less than a month. There should be plenty additional music (at least for all the new FMVs) so if Tamura isn't asked to do anything for the third time in a row he might indeed be dumped for good.

[Edit]
nevermind misread as ToD2

And on day 2......

...? I'm assuming it didn't sell well at all on the 2nd day?

Well there goes any slim chance of a 2nd Tales for the DS AND any chance of it releasing in the west. This is just great.

Yknow, the fanbook is pretty nice, and looking at the box itself. I really want to like it but its... D: Maybe it'll get more of a chance after I finish GS2.

MSRP: 5040 yen ($46)
Super Potato Price: 2857 yen ($26)

That the price can drop to half its value on the 2nd day of release speaks volumes about the product. That was duck's point.

bomba total how sweet, Namco deserves this crap.

not only is outsourcing your main RPG series to a crap developer treating your fans like shit but also shows how utterly clueless namco ****ing is.

Damn, and I thought it'll do 100k easily.
Actually, thanks to forced pricedrops, its going to hit the first shipment.

Same happened with Children of Mana if you remember, had long legs with its budget price thanks to overshipping.

I don't remember it very well, but Tales of Rebirth also had some pricedrops, but yeah, this one went to 600k copies anyway.

The fact they'll blame the DS shows how clueless they are. I wonder how many they have to sell to turn a profit. Oh and I love the line on that super potato page, "Get your wonder soft world!"

So chances are it will sell above ToP PSP but below ToE PSP?

Pretty sad if an original Tales game sells less than a port. I mean what explains the poor first day sales? No one knew it was Dimps and sorta crappy until after day 1 people bought it.
