How's your favorite genre faring GAF

Come to think of it, TPS is at it's all time best right now. Other than the lack of tactical based third person shooters, I can say I'm satisfied.

Horribly.

DMC has no new release in sight, Ninja Gaiden is dead, Santa Monica refuses to add depth to God of War, and Bayonetta 2 is on Wii U.

My two favourite genre's are Strategy RPG and RTS.

Unfortunately neither of these are doing well at the moment. I feel like the RTS genre was destroyed by MOBA's and that we get a good SRPG once per year?

Man, C&C3 was such a great game. I was heartbroken when they canned Generals on Frostbite :(

And now fucking MOBAs exist instead of good RTS games.

God dammit.

This!

My 2 favorite genres are JRPGs and Character Action games. Character action is pretty great since Bayonetta 2 came out which I am still playing. Other than that, I don't see much on the horizon. And JRPGs are OK. Pokemon is coming out this week so there is that to look forward to, as well as Xenoblade and P5 as well. But those are much farther down the road.

RPG in general is doing good, decent amount of good dungeon crawlers, Atelier, Falcom, Atlus (dungeon crawlers only). Strategy RPG are kinda rare though.

Arena FPS is doing bad atm but there's some hope.

My favourite genre is CoD. My second favourite is First Person Shooters.

The former is looking strong after a shaky year, although I still have some fears about the impact Exo suits will have on future titles.

The latter is not doing so hot, but apparently I really really need to check out Wolfenstein TNO at some point.

2D beat'm up: not that great. Dragon's Crown was very welcome. There's too much cartoony stuff though. Castle Crashers e.a. are good, but i want some Streets of Rage/Final Fight punching in the face. So, very much looking forward to Mother Russia Bleeds. Plz come to PS4/Vita.

TES/Fallout: Not looking fw to TES online on consoles. Doesn't seem to cut it for me. Give me a "classic" Fallout/TES.

Point and Click adventures....

....

Well, there will be a new Ace Attorney with some Sherlock Holmes crossover fan story aspects, which I am all for!
Still holding out on Broken Age and Kentucky Route Zero until they are completely released.
Telltale are still churning out good stuff.
Also Grim Fandango playable again on modern PCs soon! Suck it, treadmill scene!

Honestly, the outlook used to be worse. Now please more indies! (And give VLR 3!)

I'm pretty happy with my 2D platformers. Super Meat Boy, DKC Tropical Freeze, Shovel Knight, VVVVVV, NSMBU/NSLU, Rayman, Guacamelee... boy, it's been great.

I'd love to see more high budget 2D platformers tbh, Nintendo is the only company spending real money on them. (Ubisoft too? They're gonna make new Rayman games?)

I'm always happy to support quality indie games anyway so I can't complain. Crapcom ignoring Megaman is the worst thing, monsters.

Great time for shooters and WRPGs and narrative-driven games more generally. So I'm a happy camper.

I cannot wait for a true new gen fighting game to hit PS4. Not enough brawler love.

I also wouldn't mind an awesome arcade racer.

It sucks that my two favorite genres seem to be almost everyone else's least favorite genres.

Shmups is my guilty pleasure.

Not fairing well in terms of Cave. QuteJP have one coming for Xbox One next year, although I'm not buying a console for one game. Steam and PC is having a nice growing selection though.

RPGs and JRPGs are doing pretty well at the moment. Here's some that I'm looking forward to:

-DA:I
- Persona Q
- Kingdom Hearts 2.5 remix
- Witcher 3
- Bloodborne
- Persona 5

They all should release within the next 6 months.

Action Games w/ Over-The-Top Gore: TLOU, Wolfenstein: TNO, Shadow Warrior, Bayo 1/2, Hotline Miami 1 (soon 2), The Evil Within. 10/10 no complaints.

Vehicular combat: MIA :(

Pretty good I would say. I've played 3 good 'Metroidvanias' (not really a genre) this year:

- Strider (PS4)
- Guacamelee (PSVita)
- Dust (PS4)

Still would like more though!

Mainly play fighting games and I'm worried. Only thing major we really have to look forward to is guilty gear. There's no telling if tekken 7 will even get a console release next year. (I know it comes out in arcades early next year but at best it releases holiday 2015 on console) Most of the people i know have stopped going to events on the east coast with me and alot of my local meetups have been weak. I'm hoping the new guilty gear helps get some people back into the scene but right now it's anemic.

I love the fact everything is open world! Watch Dogs was a rocky start but I got Infamous, GTA V remake, and DA:I is happening, plus Witcher 3 ... and more I can't think of.

Platformers and crpgs are doing great thanks to the big indie/kickstarter boom in the last couple of years. Also Nintendo still makes to tier 3d platformers so that's good I guess.

Not that great IMO. With current 2d platformers you take only two of these: good mechanics, good level design or appealing art style. Still, there are a handful of great 2d platformers, indie and else, to keep us entertained.

3D, on the other hand, I can only think of mario 3d world and land in this gen. Nintendo is great because their games involve some sort of platforming and adventure, but that is their only proper 3d platforming series. I would love to get some recommendations though.

Right. I'm just saying that there hasn't been a time where three massive JRPGs are all coming within a new year. I'm talking about mass appeal.

It just hasn't happened.

Three massive JRPGs in a single year is nothing compared to some years.

1994:
Final Fantasy 6
Phantasy Star 4
Shining Force 2
Lunar: Eternal Blue
Illusion of Gaia
Breath of Fire

I don't really have a favorite genre outright, but arcade style pick-up-and-play games have taken off thanks to digital distribution so I'm a happy panda. Can't really complain when I can sit on my couch and browse through the likes of Garou HD, NBA Jam OFE, Scott Pilgrim, etc. and buy them for <$15-20.

I am kind of sad that rhythm games have taken a nosedive. Bought Hatsune Miku: Project Diva F on a whim yesterday since the demo gave me big time Bust A Groove vibes. I really need to get my Rock Band setup out of the garage soon, too.

I saw this year as a good indication of the future of survival horror. From the announcement of Silent Hills in the P.T. demo, Alien: Isolation proving that a great and scary Alien game can be accomplished, and The Evil Within selling well, I think survival horror had a great year and will have much more to offer in the years to come.

I haven't really kept up with many JRPGs this year outside of Persona 3, Lightning Returns, and Tales of Xillia. But I can't wait for Persona Q, Persona 5, and to finally get to play Persona 4: Golden. I think the genre is as strong as it's ever been.

Beatmania IIDX is alive and kicking. Rhythm games are probably one of the most prolific genre as of late, especially on mobile, handhelds, and arcades.

SHMUPs are still quite popular too.

I'm not much into Bemani but hasn't that not being localized since the PS2 games? They might be prolific on Arcades, but as a whole I don't see them being as popular as in the Rock Band/Guitar Hero days.
Outside of Qute, Moss, and maybe Triangle Service shmups are truly dead. I can't think of any big releases that are coming from outside of those companies.

Arcade Racers - an absolute embarrassment of riches right now with Driveclub and Horizon 2.

Tennis Games - dead by the looks of it.

RTS - dead also. Would give my left nut for a next gen Dawn of War 1.

I really enjoyed the route DoW2 took, but I also loved the strategic map-style gameplay for Dark Crusade. Hopefully DoW3 does well and is supported by multiple expansions.

Dungeon crawlers are in very good shape with the recent launch of Grimrock 2 and Binding of Isaac Rebirth. Dark Souls 2 was fantastic.

RPG's-great
Shooters-doing good though new COD is a bit blah because of the EXO suits. Just waiting for BF at this point.
Third-person action- great, really liking Unity also.

Not having Final Fantasy Tactics A3DS kills me smh. A 3DS SRPG would be glorious. Project X Zone tried but fell low. Inky the Matsuno game Crimson Shroud got high on my list and that released years ago.

Dragon Age is fantastic. Final Fantasy looks to be going in the right direction. Witcher 3 next year. Motherfucking Persona 5. Kingdom Hearts 3.

Shit is rocking.

JRPGS are pretty terrible. The quality and moderately budgeted console games have basically disappeared. So many interesting series have basically died with B tier series like Tales being the only constant. Tales is ok, but they are really safe games. They all start to merge together and would really be lost in the crowd during the PS2 days where there so many other interesting options. The other games filling out the genre on consoles are low budget niche and otaku centered games that I'm not the audience of. So I don't have many console jrpgs to play. The days of Grandia, Suikoden, Atlus thats not just Persona, and so on riding besides Final Fantasy are done.

On the bright side 15 and Xenoblade are coming so there's some home on this front. Plus Persona 5.

This.

They pretty much missed the PS3 generation. Even this gen, I don't know what else is there for consoles after XV, Xeno, P5 and KH3? 4 games are not enough at all for a whole gen.

SRPGs.

The days when Matsuno roamed the industry are long gone. Things will never be like they were but I'm content with what little SRPGs are releasing.

Fighting? OK.

Horror? After The Evil Within's extreme disappointment/flop. Silent Hills is our last hope..

This thread makes me realize I don't really have a favorite genre. I guess third-person action and modern/retro side-scrolling platformers, which are doing quite well.
