As soon as these things became computers and not just phones it was always going to be Apple, Microsoft and some flavor of Linux.

I could have swore that WeboOS runs on the TI OMAP platform, I wonder how long it's going to take HP to port over to alternate silicon. My friends tell me it's a bitch to port Android.

Okay, I shouldn't have used "boring." More tech content and less banter I guess.

The Tested podcast is even more extreme, as it's probably 90% banter, and they don't cultivate news sources or have specific insights into things like Nilay and his law background.

The Tested guys are fun though *shrug* i listen to all three, tested, thisismynext and hypercritical.

It has gary fucking whitta and its entertaining as fuck, tested isnt very inside baseball type website like asymco

Yes, I know--I'm just responding to VanMardigan and his specific complaints about the TIMN podcast and them joking around too much. TIMN is one of the best podcasts because of Josh (industry folk seem to talk to him as much as Mossberg) and Nilay.

I'm not complaining about the Tested podcast, it's directed to VanMardigan's complaints about people joking around too much.

I think people won't listen to a podcast that doesn't have people joking around. But I think it can get too far when it's like the damn TWiT people and their inside jokes and using "funny voices" that nobody understands.
 
How long did this chapter take? It seemed so fast. It seems like HP bought Palm, cranked out the Tablets, and then pulled the plug in around 1 year.

They didn't give WebOS much of a shot did they . . . but I guess between iOS and Android, they never really had much chance. I thought they had much better shot than Blackberry though . . . if WebOS is dead then Blackberry must be the walking dead. A zombie.
 
It's funny that HP thinks they'll be able to license WebOS -- they've already sullied it further by making this the OS's second large-scale failure. Why would any company want to carry that negativity around?

They're better off selling the brand w/ patents. Stop dangling the carrot of hope.

I can see that happening. QNX has no ecosystem and RIM doesn't have the culture/talent to innovate on the same level as Apple, Google, and Microsoft.

I'd love to see the real fragmentation finally happen from the Android branch. (Amazon/Rim/Google&CO)

I could see them going Android but doing a sort of Amazon/B&N way. Like having it skinned and having exclusive Blackberry apps like Messenger only on their devices. Would be a good way to compete and differentiate IMO.

they sold out of their first manufacturing run, I liked what they did and I see them being more innovative then Samsung, asus and Motorola in the tablet space.

Time to get my This is my next podcast bingo card out, i wonder if Paul owns a touchpad he cursed it to fail.
 
Weren't they running ads with the boxer dude and Miranda Cosgrove like fucking crazy for their WebOS phone?

Fusion Garage seems to be closer to HTC sense, Notion Ink, and MUI/CM in terms of what they're doing with Android. (i.e. keeping close to the "official" branch" for compatibilities sake.

Don't forget there are about 2-3 favors in China.

Levono's OpenOS, Alibaba's YunOS. The Chinese has been at it for a while now.
 
I'm sort of picturing MrPliskin as being in stasis and when he wakes up he's gonna be soooooooooooooooooo shocked.

founded VoodooPC 1991 - sold to HP 2006 - now a GM @Microsoft working in the Entertainment Business - I am an enthusiast of many things awesome.

Only God can help HP if they spin off the PC business completely. I don't see it happening.

it's just not in HP's DNA to "spin off" -- there would need to be some real linkage or they won't do it. who knows, anything is possible.

doubtful they spin off the entire PC business. likely trying to license webOS. no chance they'll spin out webOS + hardware - naa...

bah.. I'm disappointed in HP. Really disappointed... nothing more to say...

Before I left HP I delivered a heartfelt presentation: they should license #webOS for free to a real phone company. shouldda coulda...

u can't license it if u don't retain key ppl; the msg they sent today was deflating. bill & dave would be rolling in their graves. :(

Zune was out for like 4 years and had numerous iterations. Not quite the same.

Kin owners? Maybe, but TouchPad outlasted it by a day.
 
If touchpads go under $300, I'm there.

Tablets are disposable tech at this point and I'm comfortable throwing away $300 on one.

why throw away $300 when you could invest $300 on a slightly used iPad or Android tablet that will continue to evolve and get better?
