How does Samsung hold the most patents? Apple is managing to block Galaxy-anything sales in the EU and is waging war on all Android device makers.

why throw away $300 when you could invest $300 on a slightly used iPad or Android tablet that will continue to evolve and get better?

I don't understand this at all.

Like the iPhone gets better? Pass.

Performance is increasing exponentially on smartphones and tablets. These things get left in the dust just a year or two after being released. At least I know what I'm getting into with the Touchpad: a dead end.

That's not true. The apps being released on iOS still target the 3GS and iPad 1, which are over 2 years old. iOS 5 will run on 3GS and iPad 1, over 2 years after their release.

active dismissal of reality.

it's your money, bro. waste it how you want. but know that even if iOS never changes, all the 3rd party apps are constantly changing and evolving. They along with the ecosystem are why you buy an iOS device. it's a stable, predictable OS that gets out of the way and lets its apps shine. that's part of the reason why we like it so much.

If you can't understand that and why it matters...a TouchPad is definitely the right product for you.

They'll run. Probably like shit, but they'll run. And the iPad isn't even a year and a half old; it's pathetic state of affairs. At least smartphones are carrier subsidized; that makes the bitter pill a tad easier to swallow. Tablets? Not so much.

Who cares if these things can run new apps if they perform like crap? I've seen the 3G and 3GS devolve from smooth operating machines to downright unuseable and stuttering devices, respectively, from iOS upgrades.

They simply can't keep up with the current rate of technological advancement in the mobile scene.

I was able to return my TouchPad and TouchStone to Best Buy, I only got store credit for the TouchPad because it was has been 47 days since I purchased it but I got full cash for the TouchStone.

I'm just going to bite the bullet and buy an iPhone 5 next month. I hate the smuggy Apple fans but Android is such shit that I won't go near it.

I hate it when they do that. I don't mind it when all they're doing is making dumb jokes, but the last argument they had about patents was sad. Josh just tends to talk as loud as possible when trying to make a point and won't let anyone else talk, which is usually what happens when you know your argument is weak.

I am curious as to which apps run "poorly" on the original iPad. I still have my old iPad and while some apps do load slower (understandable), none of the apps I own (including games) perform badly.

Heck, Infinity Blade which is one of the most advanced games on any tablet right now still looks and runs great.

i find the other guests to be a lot more informative than josh himself. anyone else feel this way?

josh = nub imo

As a first-time listener, it's not left me with a very good impression.

I'm sure I'll have games on it and will get the "big" games but I don't expect very much. I will mainly game on my 3DS and PSP Vita. Which, I'm fine with.

Yeah, I love how my wife's 3G was unusable when it was 'upgraded' to iOS 4.

Real stable and predictable . . . for two years. I predict the iPad will enjoy a similar fate with iOS 6, assuming it even gets it.

I really don't care about apps. I'm more interested in just the browser.

the best surprises on iOS are the smaller games that don’t get the big press push. the indie scene, y’know?

If you don't care about apps and just want to use the browsers than iOS 3.0 should still be very useable for those needs.

Good news: At&t is allowing me to return my Veer.

By "big" games I mean the stuff that gets a lot of talk here on GAF and other sites. Not necessary stuff from big developers. I am never going to be a big mobile phone gamer (as long as I have real portable gaming systems) but I'll give anything a go and the price point is so low that I never mind blowing a few bucks for a few minutes of entertainment.

What will you use in the meantime until the iPhone 5 comes out? You have an old drawer phone?

I didn't use a 3G with 4.0, but I recently had to borrow one which I updated from 3.1.2 to 4.2.1 and it wasn't all that much slower.

smh. what does that even mean? you had a software upgrade problem and subsequently believe that the platform which you yourself said was problem-free for *2 years* is suddenly horrible? lol. I hate to see how you relate to full OSes. You must be one of those guys that drops their computers off at Best Buy to install RAM.

if you want a good browsing experience, why not get a $300 Android tablet? It even has dah Flashes. It will be updated for at least a little while. It has a decent enough app market.

You're taking this much better than I expected, Ulairi!

I am a product guy, I don't treat billion dollar companies like sports teams. I had an iPhone until I used webOS and I liked webOS better. I'm disappointed, but, I mean, I'll be happy with iOS which is an OS I always "liked". The only OS that I've used that draws my ire is Android and I'll stay away from that.

My big take away from the whole Palm/HP debacle is that once you're in an ecosystem just stay there. I had an iPhone 3G, 4, and an iPad 2. I have purchased some of the same apps on Android, webOS and iOS. I'm luck in that I can afford to do this but I'm done with it. I'm just going to close my eyes and left Steve Jobs do his business and just stick with the Apple ecosystem. I have an iMac, MBP, and soon to be an iPhone 5 and iPad 2/3 (if they come out). I may not like the OS as much, but hopefully some of the great innovations from webOS make their way into iOS.

I have an old Nokia phone from 2003. It still turns on and will do. I just hope all of these tech bloggers are right and the iPhone 5 is really coming next month! I'm happy that At&t is allowing me to return the phone and get my upgrade back so I'll be ready day 1 for iPhone 5. I just hope it launches with iOS 5.

How did you get AT&T to give you back your upgrade? That seems uncharacteristically friendly for a carrier.

I did something unethical and contacted a senior executive contact that I had back when I was an analyst for an investment bank. Someone from the executive resolution team contacted me and said it wasn't a problem. If you go high enough, usually you can get stuff done. Plus, they're keeping me in a contract for 2 years for a cost of $150 to them.

You make it seem like these devices will somehow blossom in the coming years. I think they'll wilt. I offer real life examples of downright degradation in performance. I haven't seen any support for your argument other than an ad hominem.

I think a $500 device should give you more than two years of usage. Sorry.

Yeea, I remember that. I had a 2G that I had upgraded to iOS4.0 and it was terrible.

Then there was iOS4.1, which fixed the slowness. So...yea.

I believe the original iPhone support ended with 3.1.3.

So...yea.

In the history of iOS updates, 4.0 was the only one that had performance problems. That one problem was fixed with the very next update (4.1).

Of course, you can inflate that and attempt to suggest that shows a pattern of "real life examples of downright degradation in performance" if you like, but that actual fact of the matter is that was the exception, not the standard.

I think also think a $500 device should give you more than two years of usage. Did your wife's 3G stop working at the 2 year mark? If you buy a playbook, you're guaranteed to not receive any updates to the OS. So how does that make any sense?

then that must have been my 3G (I've had them all except the 3GS). I can't remember exactly, but the point remains. in all the OS updates that have been released for the iPhones and iPads, only 4.0 had "slowdown" issues. Issues that were fixed in the very next OS update. but for the period of time between installations of 4.0 and the release of 4.1, the phone was a bit frustrating. many people downgraded back to the previous release until the issues were sorted. Either way, the wife's device shouldn't have stopped working. ..and it hasn't happened enough for you to worry about some pattern of "degradation".

I would usually agree with you but right now the products are just created and the technological steps we take with each revision is MASSIVE. If you want a product that is supported with new features for a LoNG time it's never good to enter a new market. Just wait it out a few years.

Very early I know...but when do all think the real clearance on this HP Pad will begin?
they've already received a $100 permanent discount.

it can only go down from here, and since these kinds of tablets are not necessity devices, they'll have to drop a long way to make sense vs. an Android or iOS device (new or used).

Except, it wasn't fixed. 4.1 improved the situation, but the 3G was still a festering piece of shit. I couldn't even hold on to the device as a dedicated Sonos controller, I hated using it so much.

The point is, you can't expect a product that is half as fast as the next year's model which is half as fast as the following year's model to keep up. You say it's an exception, I say it's just the tip of the iceberg. How do you expect a single core device to handle the OS as well as the upcoming quads, let alone the presently available dual cores?

These devices are out of date in a year and obsolete in two. My eyes are wide open to that fact and why I am willing to purchase a greatly reduced modern device over something that is already outdated. I hold zero hope that a first gen iPad will get anything beyond this next upgrade. The old tech is simply an anchor on the OS.
