(HuffPost) So Long, Sony: New Xbox One Will Be the Most Successful Console Yet

If I had All The Money, like Bill Gates does, I'd absolutely go out of my way to make sure the government gets its hands on as little of it as people. That's money that can actually make a difference- seems better than having the government piss it all away.

Some people would celebrate that. You... you can carry on acting like he's pulling an evil selfish ruse. See how sane that makes you look (not at all, in case you were wondering).

I tell people that all the time, and none of them tell me I'm crazy. At least not to my face while tied up in my basement.

HuffPo is quite possibly the worst site on the Internet. The little original content they have is written by hacks.

That's not true at all in my experience. Their reporting of often fairly balanced and very informative.

You might not agree with them, but it's disingenuous to claim it's the worse site on the internet.

Because governments are evil and exist only to piss away peoples' hard-earned money. The money you give to the government doesn't do anything to benefit the average citizen - stuff like paying for the infrastructure that maintains the roads you drive on, protects you from criminals, provides emergency services, and gives your children an education. That stuff all magically pays for itself. No, anything is better than letting money fall into the government's hands.

Not evil, no. And it does benefit people. But holding him up as some kind of selfless saint who only gives to charity out of the goodness of his heart is pretty naive, I think.

Wow, what a shill.

I fear this new Xbox. In the thread about Crackdown III possibly being real, people are already willing to buy this thing DRM be damned.

I fear that if this thing is successful, next generation (PS5, Wii3) will add this DRM (possibly worse), and costumers will no longer have any control over the things they buy.

I fear that this Xbox will make this shit standard. I honestly believe that gamers are fickle and impulsive enough to allow it.

/sigh

It's depressing.

Eh, OK, that was poorly worded. Don't worry, that's not my opinion. Taxation is important.

I'm not saying anything is better than that, either. The Gates Foundation's work is a pretty fucking unique opportunity.

Nah, again, that wasn't reflective of my full opinion of the guy. Personally, I think the charity work is driven more out of having no fucking idea what to do with all your money once you've built your empire (see also: Lucas). And yes, the inheritance tax thing is a nice incentive, but I do think the opportunity to make a difference is the driving force.

I like to see that as optimism rather than naivety. I'd never say "GATES WAS AMAZING", I mean, he was pretty fucking ruthless in some unsavoury ways during the height of Windows.

Anyway, kinda off-topic here. Feel free to PM me if you want to talk more about this, I guess?

well what did you expect when so many people pay for xbl.

That's one weird article, seriously. As many pointed out, it really reads as some sort of PR thing.

Not only he doesn't back up his claims with facts, or at least something that makes sense, it's just, well, PR stuff.

It's been a shitty deal for awhile now.

Companies are getting away with more and more because a lot of gamers behave like addicts. That's the only way I can describe it. They'll do anything for that sweet, sweet gaming fix. Even if it means giving up their rights as a consumer, or paying out the ass for overpriced DLC, or whatever else companies come up with to gouge people. That hype train pulls into the station and they're lining up to buy a ticket, no matter the cost. And as long as companies can keep getting enough people to play along with this stuff to keep it profitable, the rest of us are dragged along with them. The sad thing is that I think companies not only realize it at this point, but are actively encouraging that sort of mentality.

The best realisation about this whole thing is the apparent struggle to discern whether this is 1) a parody article 2) a pre-packaged ad blurb or 3) an actual opinion piece.

That's the current state of journalism, folks. We're through the looking glass.

You are correct to be fearful and your assertion that gamers are fickle is also spot on.

In 2005 when word started to get out that add-ons and extra content for games would be monetized on Xbox Live, I laughed my ass off. I knew it would fail spectacularly. I knew, deep within my core, that nobody would be fucking stupid enough to start paying extra money over the price of the game, for new maps and horse armor. See...they used to give us that shit for free on the OG Xbox and Xbox Live 1.0. So my fellow gamers rioted on message boards when word of this happened. Promises to stand strong and not give in to this blatant form of greed were made. I mean nobody would be stupid enough to pay for this stuff, right? We got this stuff for free for 3 years on Xbox Live. We had been getting a decade of free mods and extra content on PCs without paying for it. Those were back in the days when developers were happy to give you a little something extra, just as a thank you in a sincere form of gratitude for buying and continuing to play their game. No way this was going to work. It would fail spectacularly and backlash would be so great and gamers would riot so hard..Microsoft would have to relent or they'd be out of the console business forever.

We see how that turned out. The first fucking boatload of idiots bought that horse armor, and it was all downhill from that point.

Virtual skinner boxes creating addictive behavior. Its all according to keikaku.

Eh, at the time it was worth it, compared to the competition. Now, there's a clean slate.

Yeah thats how I felt up until 2 years ago. I never really felt dirty paying for Xbox Live until all the monetization took over, and they started sticking things behind the pay wall that you could get for free on every other single piece of modern consumer electronics equipment on planet earth.

Not only is the Xbox One a device brimming with extraordinary technical achievements (consider the SoC, rapid-speed 8 GB RAM, and an 8-Core CPU with on-chip GPU) that will play the most graphically impressive games to ever appear on a console, but the network it is connected to is much bigger and better than ever.

he missed '5 billion transistors'.

The "hmmm... I dunno if I like where this is going" point for me was seeing Microsoft try to put BBC iPlayer behind a pay wall.

I got like 2 1/2 sentences in and realized this wasn't satire or some type of huffington post head up their own ass joke...

nope. He's really saying these words. Comes off clueless and straight up paid.

An entire article about who will win without mention of Nintendo, clear double winner (Wii and DS) of the previous gen and most successful games company in history in both hardware and software sold. They even go on and on about Kinect which was a direct answer to the Wii Remote.

Sure the Wii U looks pretty bad right now, but we're back to Gamecube days PR wise for Nintendo. They don't even warrant a mention it seems.

expect more of this attitude after e3. i stand by my statement that the event on tuesday was pretty damn good, because it appealed to the most important demographics. we'll just have to see what the price and launch looks like (meaning, if it's full of bugs or it runs smoothly and with good marketing to boot).

this may be the last generation of consoles, as we know them. i think microsoft is ahead of the game by transforming gaming into a service, even in their little hybrid way. it's not the future i signed up for, but it's the one i saw coming.

Leo Laporte and his guests on the Live Special TWIT had a positive reaction to the reveal. But I still think that Microsoft Xbox One won't be able to change user habits and behaviors in the living room as they seem to be betting on. Even more so on a family living room.

E3 will convince the early adopters. Mark my words.

Yeah like every other e3 for the last four years where Microsoft boasts about new killer games and things and it ends up being timed exclusives, kinect crap like star wars and live action trailers.

Are we talking about the same Microsoft that his been full of shit the last several years?

"This" meaning the PS3/360 gen? Because I think they are. The traditional gaming console isn't dead after next gen, it's dead when next gen begins.

you might be right. i was considering next gen to be the last one, especially with nintendo bowing out in the next four years.
