“Some games teach you to kill"

This coming from the man that is constantly "threatening" on going to war with Colombia just because.

What a clown.

I am, broadly speaking, a supporter of the Bolivarian movements in South America, especially in their intentions of establishing an internationalist counterforce to global neoliberal hegemony. That noted, however, I think this is a strikingly ignorant comment from Chavez. Video games are just another medium like film, television, or newspapers, and as such should not be reduced to a single, homogenous message. On the other hand, I also think we - meaning gamers - should not be so quick to defend them through recourse to the they're-just-games argument, because it also delegitimizes games as a medium. Games, like any other medium, can be and are vehicles for ideology.

are they socialists or communists or dictatorship?

Socialist regime moving by leaps and bounds to the sort of authoritarian dictatorship demonstrative of Communism in practice.

But more accurately and succinctly, the man is a human turd.

So anyone actually read the article?

Maybe my sarcasm meter is broken, but he's referring to all videogames as Playstations.

Same here in the Middle East. It's because video games weren't popular here before the playstation came around. I kid you not when I say there are young people here who actually think they are living the "third" generation in gaming.

I disagree with Chavez as well, but the majority of people posting in this thread just are beyond stupid. Just supports the ignorant American stereotype. Don't know whats going on in the world and don't give fuck. Challenging the U.S. backed oligarchy in Latin America is a massive accomplishment by Chavez. Who gives a flying fuck if he criticized video games.

Thank god for your comment. Reading this thread makes me embarrassed to be associated with GAF.

NeoGAF is one of the most left-wing places on the internet, without going over the deep end and drinking the socialist kool-aid.

Chavez, like most socialist populist dictators, tend to follow the same pattern. Get into power through populist methods, appeal to the poor etc. Wreck the economy. Tighten rights, liberties and 'crack down' on media in the name of socialism, and the cycle continues.

I can understand a reactive sympathy to the likes of Chavez if your from the region and have been part of the failed policies of many US governments, but apologizing for a tin pot dictator to spite the 'capitalists' doesn't seem to make much sense either.

Personally, I always felt the US, in retrospect, should have just kept a hands off approach to all the latin American communist regimes of the 50s,60s, 70s and80s. A vast majority of them would have collapsed in 1989 when the Soviets went down the tubes.

Uh yeah, us gamers can shrink our hobby into something small if it means we can bash Chavez's bullshit. This is how he feels about everything. He is only saying this crap becuase he can't control the production and content of games like he controls television down there. You think he actually sees television as a medium of art?

The man is a complete idiot, as plenty of threads in the OT point out, and there is really little reason to take him seriously becuase he is flat out not intelligent. If it wasn't for him being ant-America, you would be able to see it.

I disagree that letting them go nuts with communism in the 50's and 60's would have been better. Them going down that path now and it ending in failure, as communism always does, is a far better outcome. Yeah, Chavez is an annoying, yet entertaining Booger, but he'll ultimately end like Castro, sitting in his own shit with his country crumbling all around him, unless he tries for nukes, and then he'll be ending much sooner.

I think that the South American socialist/communists of today are much less of a threat without the Soviet Union pumping weapons, cash, and aid in. It'll speed up the failure rate of the states, and they'll never pose a real threat without a huge power like the Soviets backing them.

Yes, it's a horrid humanitarian disaster, and it's going to get much worse as Chavez kills more people he disagrees with, but if people in the region don't mind the murder of innocents in the name of a failed ideal, then it isn't in our interests to do anything about it either, we'll just spawn another ignorant, ill conceived commie revolution that will end up hurting more of the people in the region. I wish them luck, and I truly hope they find themselves free again some day. People need to accept the fact that there is no free lunch. A government that gives you everything is a government ruling a country with nothing left to give. Everyone ends up poor when taxes are too high, or when business is mismanaged by one bumbling idiot running all industry. One corrupt guy, and your whole country is fucked, millions suffer, and you're stuck. Welcome to Venezuela.

My God, this is why threads about politics shouldn't be in the Gaming forum. The ignorance... oh the ignorance...

Read the post I agreed with, genius. You don't have to agree on everything with someone you have similar ideologies (socially I'm waaaaaay more left than Chavez for example).

How does the fuck is Chávez "Challenging the U.S. backed oligarchy in Latin America"? Dumb ignorants like you are the only reason this caudillo stills gets support.
Venezuela is ruined. Censoring the press, persecuting political enemies, the economy of the country is destroyed, and more than ever (I'd say completely) oil dependent. Not to mention the rampant inflation (25%) that is like a slow, sadistic torture against the poorest people of the country, while the new oligarchy created by Chávez is very comfortable getting all the money from... The US. what a brave way to fight 'teh EVIL EMPIRE'.

People like you are pathetic and the main reason why South America seems to be a place that will be forever haunted by dictators and dictatorships.

Yes, because 70% of the population wasn't living in poverty before Chavez. The problem is that the ruling class there always rapes the opposition. It was the same before Chavez, except the rich were better off.

LOL Enjoy that delusion.

Still if something like this gives Chavez a hardon each night, then good for him, its nice he can achieve something firm once in a while.
