Any chance of the affecting the whole power grid across the east coast and into Canada? As in more than localized power outages but a complete collapse across multiple provinces and states?

Point A is my college, Point B is a community college 2 miles away, which has cancelled classes for all of Monday and Tuesday.

See that water to the left of point A, that my college is up against? That's the HUDSON FUCKING RIVER. We're just asking to get ripped apart.

Despite ALL of that, the only thing my school has posted is an announcement saying classes are definitely ON for tomorrow.

I'm bitter.

An all time high flood tide is forecast for there tomorrow. :/

DC metro service shutting down; whoa.

The Metrorail system will be closed on Monday. Rail service on Sunday night will continue operate as scheduled until its normal closing time (midnight). No decision has yet been made on when Metrorail service will be restored after Monday.

All Metrobus service will be suspended as of the end of the service day on Sunday and remain suspended until further notice.

All MetroAccess service has been cancelled on Monday.

Damn, I feel like I'm supposed to be worried, but it's still pretty calm outside. Reporting in from NW DC.

Do we know when it's supposed to hit Toronto (if at all?)?

It's been kind of vague, but according to CBC;

The weather agency said the storm is expected to hit Ontario, Quebec and the Maritimes later Monday or early Tuesday as a post-tropical storm with heavy rainfall, winds and waves.

Environment Canada said heavy rainfall was expected in parts of Ontario and Quebec beginning late Monday or early Tuesday, although the amount would vary greatly according to location. Some regions could see up to 75 millimetres.

Apparently the Red Cross is also urging people to prepare and stock up on supplies.

The MTA has me working 24 hour shifts until this blows over. I probably won't see my family until Wednesday. During the last storm last year I rode a boat down the subway tracks; I expect to do the same tomorrow. Good times. : /

Holy shit, I didn't see that. That's INSANE. Definitely makes sense that security closed down the walkways and stuff down near the river, and is requiring anyone parked in relatively low parking lots to move their cars.

Not really. Transmission lines are pretty sturdy and usually out in the open. Unless there is massive flooding ... to the point where bulk substations start flooding ... but we're talking epic flooding.

I'm wondering about Toronto too ... It seems like we are going to be on the edge of the storm but may get it bad too depending on where the storm goes after landfall. A lot of models show it barreling straight through lake Ontario to Toronto but the question is how powerful will it be?

:lol Dutchess is probably all commuters so I guess it makes sense why they would have to cancel.

Are they really usually bad with cancellations? Everyone here is pretty shocked they didn't cancel tomorrow. I'm sure plenty of teachers will cancel their classes either way.

My friend goes there and says its usually like that. I suspect they will just wait to the last minute. The campus is way to close to the Hudson for them to consider it safe. I think they are just waiting to actually see the rain or maybe the city of Poughkeepsie will force them eventually. Ugh, its really gonna suck for you, isn't the cafeteria one of the closest building to that river?

I'm northern Westchester too. I work in mt vernon, I'm probably not going to work tomorrow, assuming work isn't closed anyway.

Im debating not going in. Getting to work will be ok i guess but getting home will be a greek tragedy. Trees will be down all over. All the local towns have slashed their tree trimming budgets.

Really wish they'd close my office.

Not going in then. I highly doubt my employer will close though. They're a California-based firm and they don't really understand East Coast weather.

Yeah it's hard to say. Granted I haven't searched around that much yet (just got home) but I was kind of expecting more...concrete predictions of timing and severity considering how much the news is hyping it.

The Mayor is saying my area has to evacuate, the surge could be like 6 feet higher than last time. That would flood my first floor and the parking lot. FUUU. Im out of here. jesus this is going to potentially affect me very badly. =(

Later GAF

Good to know that it's what they usually do. I agree, campus extends all the way to the river, and we ARE too close.

You have to walk downhill to actually get to the river, and unless I'm forgetting about something, I think all the buildings on campus and stuff are back up that hill, so I think we'll be alright. Plus, the dorm I'm in is connected to the cafeteria, so I don't even have to step outside to get to it, awwww yeah.

Toms River, NJ here. I'm 4 miles off the coast and here's hoping it hits AC like they're saying it might, but it's probably got just as good a chance at hitting 40 miles further north in Central NJ. In any case, I'm fucked. Tried to buy a generator on Friday and they laughed IN MY FACE. (ok not really).

I just can't take days without power... I would've gone inland, but this fucking storm has the potential to fuck up all of PA as well

welp my work never got canceled, everything else in MA is canceled. We're going to go to work, it'll start to storm than they'll cancel 1st shift. Happened last big storm.

yup, nowhere really to go. i cleaned my gutters, pulled anything that can get damaged from water off my basement floor and i;m ready to go. The only game for me is how long without power. Im saying under 12 hours

im nowhere near water though

I think at this point no one really knows how much drop off it will have once it makes landfall.

So lucky. In my town if someone farts the power goes out. I'm totally ready to not have power until a week from today.

Good luck bud (and everyone out on the coast.) Be safe.

Heh, I almost went to Marist. Grew up down the road in Kingston.

One perk of living in Manhattan is that if the power goes out, it'll be restored shortly.

In any case, I have the battery operated radio ready and also a TV tuner that plugs into a laptop so we can get TV, too.

Baltimore here. My kid's school is closed and I just found out my work is closed tomorrow :)

I'm as prepared as I'll ever be. Lots of water and food. My only concern is my child getting bored if the power goes out. The more bored a kid is the more annoying they get - Time to make sure all handhelds are fully charged!

You didn't charge 8 different portable gaming devices like we did? C'mon!

Same here, for some reason I don't think it's going to be a long outage.

I'm on the upper main line
