Hype me up to buy a wii

I too have an unusual amount of passion for the Gamecube, in light of that I think the Wii is a fantastic console because much like the Gamecube it not only has the quality first-party offerings but for those willing to take a risk it has some excellent, neglected and original gems, mostly from Japanese devs.

I also happen to like Wii Music and Wii Fit, I guess that invalidates the last 15 years of my gaming life because now I must be a dirty casual. I kinda find the people who shelled out for a Wii and then say they switched it on twice very amusing, of course you're not going to like a console if you don't actually bother to play it and explore the surprisingly diverse and high-quality library.

This late into the Wii's life there are quite a few things to buy and play.

Most of the people in this thread are early adapters that were burned (I don't blame them for being bitter during that time, though). Now you can get one and find lots of stuff to enjoy. But be warned that a lot of it is niche stuff.

Also, 09 is looking fantastic.

We must remember that the DS had no games for about a year. Only when the first Advance Wars and Canvas Curse came out did some good stuff start to flow, and now nearly everyone thinks it's got an amazing library. Have faith.

Why buy games if you aren't interested in them? I looked for Wii games in Circuit City yesterday, but I'm not going to buy something like Ninja Reflex just because it's there.

In my opinion, 2007 was Wii's best year, with Super Mario Galaxy and Metroid Prime 3: Corruption both being released. It wasn't until 2008, when Nintendo's most prominent releases were a mascot kart racing game and a mascot fighting game, that things took a turn for the worse. I think the people who have been burned are those who want a diverse library of high quality titles, rather than a sparse selection of 1st party titles every couple of years. And the library is even less exciting if you're becoming fatigued with Nintendo's decades old franchises.

I can see your point. But Nintendo has always worked that way, even on the DS for the most part. My beef (and probably many others) is with third parties. They're the source of all of this shovelware, unfortunately.

If third parties would make higher quality titles, things would probably be a lot better. It seems to be happening in Japan, but western companies seem to be having trouble letting go of the mini-game teet.

I'm starting to wonder if most of the people that started on mini-games have moved up to stuff like Mario Kart, though. Most of Ubisoft's Wii games are in the bargain bins now.

Poor Threi, I hope he'll be back with us soon again. I can't help but be amused by the amount of Wii disdain in this thread, too.

Anyway, I will never understand these "hype me for x" threads. Why should neogaf do the work of (in this case:) Nintendos PR guys?
If you want it, get it. If you don't, don't. If you're not sure, read more Wii-related threads and sift through release lists and reviews.

No offense, OP, but we are not your rl friends. We can't possibly know your personality, preferences and/or quirks. We do not know what 300+ bucks mean to you. We can't really give you any meaningful advice beyond what you should already know.

Play the console in shops or by mooching off friends. Search youtube, gametrailers or whatever else there is for gameplay snippets of the titles you're interested in. Peruse review sites and review aggregators. Make a tiny list of the games you would need to play this very instant, and look if the price of the games and the price of the console are worth it to you. Check future releases if your taste in gaming will be catered to.

Think for yourself. Spend your money wisely. Don't rely on strangers with more or less hidden agendas.

Me? I am very happy with my Wii. I recommend you buy it for World of Goo, FF:CC:MLAAK and all the other awesome Wiiware titles, plus the handful of outstanding disk-based games like Endless Ocean or Boom Blox. Plus there's the VC! Awesome, albeit a little bit on the expensive side of things. Secret of Mana never looked so good back in the day... and they even gave it a new translation in Europe.

Well no you wouldn't buy Ninja Reflex because its a hunk of crap, but if you are on GAF then you are obviously into your games more than most so I would expect you'd explore the library of the console a little more, have a diverse taste and be aware of more 'niche' titles. A lot of so-called 'hardcore' gamers dismiss Wii because they look at the line-up, see very few 'blockbuster' titles, and decide it must be rubbish.

But if you can't appreciate games like No More Heroes, Boom Blox, Zack & Wiki, Battalion Wars, de Blob or even something like Kororinpa then its not the fault of the console or the quality of the games in question, its just that they are not to your taste. I don't like Call of Duty, Gears of War and stuff like that but I don't say the PS3 and 360 are rubbish consoles.

I'm an early adopter, so I guess I'll post my thoughts.

I picked up a Wii day one with Twilight Princess, Trauma Center: Second Opinion, and Red Steel. Twilight Princess received most of the early play time, followed by Trauma Center. Still have barely touched Red Steel, hahah. I've picked up a number of games for it since...let's see...

-Trauma Center: New Blood
-No More Heroes
-Zack & Wiki
-Sonic & the Secret Rings
-Metroid Prime 3
-Battalion Wars
-Fire Emblem
-Resident Evil 4
-Super Smash Brothers Brawl
-Mario Galaxy

Those are the ones I can recall offhand. It's not my most-played console. At the moment the PS2 is getting all the loving, thanks to Persona 4. I have access to my cousin's 360, but the only game I own for that is RB2. The other 360 games that interest me are all played at a friend's house (Tales of Vesperia).

I don't feel as though I've been "burned" by my Wii purchase. I am somewhat annoyed by Nintendo's laggy online experience and unwillingness to bring over certain games, but beyond that, I've had quite a bit of fun with the thing. I'm definitely looking forward to a few of the '09 games, and still have a couple existing games waiting in my backlog.

In the end, you might as well pick one up. I paid $250 for it a couple of years ago. If I wanted to pick one up now, I'd still have to pay $250. It'll probably be $250 a year from now too. Say what you want about it, but it's like the gold standard of consoles. I'd certainly feel much more burned if I spent 599 US dollars on a PS3 at launch, compared to its current price.

If you are a "core gamer" who owns a 360 and a PS3 and possibly even a gaming PC then you probably won't use your Wii very much. I fall into that category and I rarely turn on my Wii except to play a brief session of Wii Sports or some other multiplayer game when I have friends over. All of my friends who fall into this category also rarely use their Wiis and some have even sold them off. However, that doesn't mean the console isn't worth owning.

In my opinion Mario Galaxy and Twilight Princess are worth the entry price of the Wii. Mario Galaxy especially is really that good. There are also a few other titles that are definitely worth your time like Metroid Prime 3, Zack & Wiki (if you enjoy adventure games) and Resident Evil 4 Wii Edition as well as many other Gamecube games and their respective Wii remakes that you may have missed out on. Furthermore, there will be many more titles to look forward to as a core gamer over the coming years such as Dragon Quest X, Monster Hunter 3, etc...

If gaming is your hobby and you have the disposable income then I would definitely recommend getting a Wii and just holding on to it. You probably won't use it even a fraction as much as your other consoles, but it is worth holding onto for the great games that are out now and that will be coming out in the coming years that will only be available on the Wii. Just don't expect it to become your primary gaming machine and you surely won't be disappointed.

I'm hyped for the Wii. I got a PS3 last year and since then, about 20 games for it. At this point, though, there's nothing more in the PS3's library that I want to play, and only 2 or 3 games coming out next year that I'm interested in. Since the Wii's 2009 schedule looks much superior, this looks like a good time to make a switch.

I'm going to sell the PS3 and replace it with a Wii. I never had a GC, so with all the old GC games, Wii's existing library, and its 2009 games, I think I'll busy with it.

I have about as many games for the Wii as I do the PS3 and 360 combined. It's not my most played console at this very moment, but that's because I'm busy playing PS2 backlog and a few new multi-platform games. But it's pretty damn difficult to deny the Wii has a decent catalogue of titles to support most gamers by this point. If you honestly can't find anything that appeals to you there, then I pity you.

But more importantly, bring back Threi. What the hell man?

Retail:

Super Mario Galaxy
The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess
Resident Evil 4: Wii Edition
Sonic & the Secret Rings
Zack & Wiki
Metroid Prime 3

WiiWare

Lost Winds
World of Goo

Virtual Console

COUNTLESS titles....

Start with Phantasy Star IV, Super Mario: Lost Levels, and Sin & Punishment if you're having trouble deciding.

There are more, of course. I got bored with the system after several months and have a strong preference towards next-gen titles. That said, there is plenty of good stuff on the Wii. And the Virtual Console is an almost endless supply of excellent titles.

Well some games are not up to the PS2 level of graphics, so some of the criticism is rather valid.
Do some research if you want to get hyped, otherwise you'll see plenty of hate coming out of this thread.
Not even all PS3 games are up to PS2 level of graphics. So what?

The best games available now are:

No More Heroes
Zack and Wiki
Boom Blox
Mario Galaxy
Metroid Prime 3
Twilight Princess
World of Goo (WiiWare)

After that you have months of nothing, loads of hype to look forward to, and many letdowns
First of all there are other worthwhile games (i.e. Smash Brothers, de Blob, Blastworks, Lost Winds, Tales of Symphonia, Bully, Okami, etc.). Second, even if there were no more Wii games you listed 7 games! Those games are going to take him a long time to finish, especially considering he also has a 360 and a PS3. My point is that in the time it takes him to complete those 7 games other games such as the Mad World, The Conduit, Tenchu, etc. will be out. The Wii owners who should have no worries about running out of games are the ones that are buying right now, they still have to get caught up. Heck, I got my Wii at launch and I still haven't played Boom Blox or No More Heroes and I'm currently working on Metroid Prime 3.

I'll be honest...if you buy Wii fit, your parents will use the Wii more then you. It's a pain to shoo them off the Wii board...so well.. I guess it's theirs :(

I'm serious about PES Wii.

That title once again shows that the pointer is the best innovation in console hardware since the analog stick. Why everyone continues to ignore that and focus on bloody waggle, I'll never understand in a million years.

BUY PES 08 WII.

Actually, 09 comes out in a few months. Barring any major screw ups, it should be even better than 08. So just get that when it comes out.

I respectfully disagree. Both of those games are worth purchase. Super Paper Mario is not, I will agree.

Why can't people understand that their own opinions are not applicable to everyone?:lol
Super Paper Mario is worth a purchase if you like RPGs and mainly 2D platformers. I don't understand all the hate for it...I guess people don't like RPG-level text in their platformers.

Blast Works is another good cheap game if you want a LittleBigPlanet of shooters. WarioWare: Smooth Moves is pretty good if you like that kind of thing, and MLB Power Pros is good if you like baseball games (though you can get it for the PS2 also, probably cheaper). It may look cute, but it's one of the best simulators I've played, definitely my favorite baseball simulator.

Buy it, play the ten or so awesome games for it, sell it next Xmas at no loss and wait for Nintendo to pull their head out of their ass. Note: This may take a while.

Do you think Sega will re-release Shenmue for the Wii? Nah that makes too much sense...

Sega released a new NiGHTS game and a re-make of Samba de Amigo. I think anything is possible with Sega now.

I'd rather they port JGR and PDO. At least those would benefit from the motion/pointer controls.

Super Mario Galaxy
Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess
Super Smash Brothers Brawl
Resident Evil 4 Wii
Metroid Prime 3: Corruption
Wario Land: Shake It
Okami (if you didn't get it on PS2)
Geometry Wars Galaxies
Mario Kart Wii
World of Goo
LostWinds
Strong Bad's Cool Game for Attractive People
Excite Truck
deBlob
Guitar Hero World Tour, if the Wii is going to be your party console
Super Paper Mario
Sonic and the Secret Rings (maybe)

That's a decent start. There's more stuff that's probably recommendable, but I haven't played/finished that stuff yet. (consider Fire Emblem, Bully Scholarship Edition, Boom Blox, etc.)

I'd recommend looking at Super Mario Galaxy, Twilight Princess, Metroid Prime 3, Super Smash Bros., Mario Kart, Boom Blox, Fire Emblem, Zack and Wiki, Resident Evil 4, Blast Works, Wario Ware, de Blob, Okami, and No More Heroes. On the Wii Ware front, check out World of Goo, Mega Man 9, Dr. Mario, and Tetris Party. Also, you should have no trouble finding several dozen Virtual Console games that interest you. Anyone who can't seem to find good games on the Wii obviously isn't looking very hard.

I would like to add the Wiiware game Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: My Life as a King. Is truly one of gaming finer points, where when you look at the clock it's 8pm and the next thing you know it's 5am....

If you need to be convinced then I'd suggest you just stick with what you have and enjoy already. Then again the resale value is high so ... do whatever you want.

There are some great games

Mario Galaxy
Zelda:TP
Metroid Prime 3
Mario Kart Wii
RE4: Wii (great controls)
Wario Land
World of Goo

... but that is pretty much it imo

I do not care for the controls i Super Smash but it is a nice fan service and there are some average to good 3rd party stuff

Heres hoping Nintendo actually releases some real games next year

Fine. Don't buy the Wii because Nintendo doesn't give a shit about the hardcore gamers who have bought/are going to buy the Wii.

It's easy to argue they're not doing a good job, but they're also bankrolling a number of games that even Nintendo of a few years ago wouldn't take a chance on. Perhaps they're doing it incompetently, but this "THEY DON'T GIVE A SHIT ABOUT US THOSE BIG MEANIES" stuff just strikes me as whining.

Hell, Sin & Punishment found success on the Wii and is getting a sequel because of that success.

You want to protest something? Go to Redmond and tell them to bring over games, but otherwise the whining is just getting embarrassing.

You won't be touching it after a month or so. Well, it will get some wiisport play when you have people over, but that's it.
This is the truth.
Buy it and sell it when you are done.

Super Mario Galaxy, Metroid Prime 3: Corruption, Zelda: Twilight Princess and all the other games that have already been mentioned in this thread. There's also alot of awesome stuff on WiiWare and the Virtual Console. Get a couple of Nyko Perfect Shots while your at it for House of the Dead, Ghost Squad and Resident Evil UC. You can also play your cube games in 480p with Wii component cables(or 480i for PAL-land).

Wow, did the change into a New year make the Wii haters extra vicious? Some of the comments in here are wow inducing. Also, Threi... ;____;

Super Mario Galaxy is the greatest game ever made. That's all you need to know.

I'd say paying 300 dollars (250 for Wii, 50 for SMG) is worth it for SMG alone.

Also, I find the "Buy the Wii, play games sell it later" comments to be hilarious. You already bought it, why sell it and get 150 dollars back out of your 250 dollar purchase? Might as well keep it for when another game you want for it comes out.

A profit? :lol You'll make 50 dollars at the most, and then you'll end up rebuying a Wii in 2010 anyway, maybe for 200 dollars instead of 250. Is the slight profit really worth it? Why not just keep the Wii when you already own it?

I dont think Ive ever played a game in as much hysterics as in Mario Strikers. :lol

Yeah, I attest to it, though I never had the opportunity for regular multiplayer sessions. The few I had went down well though. Its good fun.

I hope you have a CRT tv, i tried zelda twilight princess on my 40" 1080p TV and cried the game looked like a big brown smudge.
Lookily i kept my old trusty CRT for my old consoles.
