Hypothetical Movies: The Flash

DC doesn't even realize that they're sitting on a much bigger goldmine than Batman with this character.

Truth, maybe not to the extent that he would be more popular than Batman, but Flash is one of the more grounded and relatable characters that DC has. Sure there is the whole Speed Force stuff, but Flash is more of a grounded superhero than having to deal with the likes of aliens, greek gods, and underwater civilizations.

I also think that there really is something in Wally that DC has been ignoring since the return of Barry Allen. This might be a load of hyperbole, but I always felt like Wally was DC's Peter Parker, in the sense that he was a kid who had to grow up and take responsibilities such as taking the mantle of Flash when Barry died. He is funny and in many ways immature, but through the years he grew up, became a better hero, and had a family.

Barry was good in which he served the purpose of a role model and ideal hero, but what made the Flash so interesting was watching Wally have to grow up and become his own man.

I always wondered why they didn't at least try to do The Flash in a movie, especially after such awesome moments from him in the Justice League cartoons.

Because DC is stupid. That's really all there is to it.

"Green Lantern bombed? Clearly this is not an indication of that movie's quality, but instead proof that people only want Batman."

Also Chris Pine sounds pretty good. I'd be down for that.

Chris Pine or NPH would be okay with me. What else is Pine up to outside of Star Trek. Like... nothing.

I think the best way to do it would make the Flash a more lighthearted character, but still set in the big, thematic DC style. He makes quips, he's not very smart, but he's just that-- a normal guy in a grandiose dramatic universe that makes jokes occasionally.

The villain has to be Reverse Flash or some other guy with speed powers. This works because you can tie their origin together, and it's an easy way to set up the climactic action scenes without too much work.

Just having a guy moving too fast to see, and becoming a red blur, will look silly. It'll be alright every now and then, if they play up effects of his powers on the world around him, like in the Man of Steel trailer when we see Superman crack the ground when he takes off, or leave contrails when he's flying fast enough. That stuff has to happen for Flash. But for the most part, Flash's speed needs to be shown from his perspective. Instead of having Flash going faster in a normal speed world, have the world around Flash slow down. Hi-speed cameras, Zack Snyder taken to a new level.

Establish that Flash has to focus to use his powers, as he's learning them, like the Force in Star Wars (You could actually use this explanation and have Flash quip "Speed Force" if you really wanted to). So at the beginning Flash is fast enough so that from his perspective we see things like... a window breaks and the shards take a minute to fall to the ground. As he develops his power we see time slow to a point where he can run somewhere and back as someone closes their eyes for a moment. Finally at the end, once he's mastered his powers, he can outrun a bullet to save someone.

So at the end, when Flash and the villain fight, it becomes a contest of who can become more in tune with the Speed Force. As one gets more focused, the other begins to move slower.

Also, make sure you say that he's much faster than Superman. I don't give a shit. In order for this character to fit in with the Justice League movie, he has to be insanely faster than Superman.

Edit:
So a large portion of the movie will be this:

This. This sounds so fucking awesome.

Can the Elongated Man be in it? Or at least have a little Elongated Man short for the after the credits sequence. For old times sake.

How do you make The Flash's costume not look stupid?

I mean, they updated Superman's costume, looks awesome. Batman's is fairly simple and already looked badass. Diana could wear awesome battle armour. What does The Flash do.

Those lightning bolt ears look stupid.

this needs to be done we need a speedster film.

It can't be that hard. Flash can't be gritty and dark, this needs to be lighthearted and fun with plenty of humor. the JL animated series nailed Flash.

The Flash's costume should be a modified form of a sort of safety suit he would wear at the laboratory. Have it be made of a tiled, rubbery material that's designed to be immune to friction and air resistance. This might not be a popular opinion, but I think it might be wise to put some kind of goggles on him.

You know your stuff!

I wonder if it would be a good idea to imply that Flash has gone a bit crazy. I do agree that Flash's strengths seem to lie in a more lighthearted tone, but that will be difficult to mesh with the seriousness of Man of Steel and Batman. So, to reconcile the tonal differences, make it seem like Flash is a bit off in his own little world, due to how the speed force affects him. And by crazy, I mean nothing major or anything, just that he sees the world in a more lighthearted way than it is.

Are we going to get another super hero film that isn't a summer pop corn flick? I want another Watchmen, or something along those lines; sophisticated, dark, provocative and mature. Instead we get Ant Man and the tragedy that is Iron Man 3

Well, if you like watchmen, and most people like Batman Begins, the guys who did that are making Man of Steel. Though we know what the basic structure is going to be, we'll have to see how they present it to tell how intelligent they it is.

But Flash is designed to be a summer popcorn flick, maybe with dark, mature undertones.

Those lightning bolt ears look stupid.

Personally, I would change the ears to resemble decals on the sides of his mask. Nothing fancy, but once he hits a certain speed, they show up.

Or hell, even make them not be on the regular costume and only appear when he's running.

The 2nd one sounds better to me on a practical manner.

NOOOOOOOOOOO
you remove those and we end up with another

as long as they aren't overdone, they look fine.

Dont get this hate of Barry. i mean, i get people love Wally but Barry is great too and i feel like skipping him would be lame. Honestly, i like him even more post resurrection.

I love that he's a scientist too. Being a forensic scientist is pretty cool imo and can add a lot to a movie.

In fairness, Nolan's batman never strived to be THE best at anything. He's got some schooling from princeton (from which he never graduated), only mastered a few martial arts at most, even his best technology isn't on par with comics stuff which is flat out futuristic, tech which is all built by lucius btw (in the comics, he makes some stuff himself), and his presence as head of Wayne Tech is symbolic at best for the most part. Honestly, he's may be the least capable batman of all his incarnations.

Thank god for dat narrative.

yep. movie batman is the dumbest and weakest incarnation.

tony stark makes him look like a fool too, he did more detective work in iron man 3 than all of the batman films combined. (i love batman begins and tdk btw)

All while still being a complete idiot, making his iron men out of tin foil, not doing anything in preparation for the mandarin attack, not having suits stashed in multiple locations, etc. And Tony's detective work amounted to what was blisteringly obvious by the point he actually deduced what it was. Tony did do more detective work, but it wasn't good work, while bruce kicked back and let his 'realistic' technology do what should really be impossible to solve his problems. Odd, since it's suppose to be the other way around.

But we should get back to discussing the Flash movie.

I think having a reverse Flash in the first movie would be a bit boring. The mirror match isn't as exciting if you don't get to see him use his powers against other threats first.

Here's how I see a potential trilogy, because everything has to come in threes:

The Flash - The Rogues (Obviously not all of them, but a few of them)
The Fastest Man Alive - Grodd, Gorilla City, and all that
Flashpoint - Zoom, alternate universe and whatnot

All I've ever seen him in is the cartoons and that's pretty all I know. Whoever they cast would probably have to have the charm that rivals RDJ's to pull it off.

NPH would make a terrible Flash. Stop it, guys.

This is my favorite kind of post. 'This idea is terrible... But I'm not going to give an alternative because then you guys will make fun of me and I won't look cool'

If he's going that fast, how does he stick to the surface of the Earth? Wouldn't he fly off into space?

Speedforce.

Speedforce is the answer to all Flash questions.

Why doesn't the air friction burn him alive when he's going so fast? Why doesn't the friction grind his legs down to bloody stumps when he stops? Why don't the bones in his arm shatter when he punches someone while running stupid fast? How is he able to ignore inertia and turn instantly instead of requiring like a two mile turning radius?

Speedforce.
