I admit it: I suck at FPS

I am terrible at FPS. Lucky for me (and you) there are other classes more suited to us. I like combat medic, and if I'm in the mood for trashing things, engineer is great. It keeps you out of the CQC battles and still let's you contribute. Utilized correctly one medic or engineer can tip a capture point in one direction or another.

Same for me. I like to blame it on my age. I think my reflexes have slowed down too much for me to be good at them.

I actually suck at almost all game genres. Only reason I keep playing them is because I don't have anything better to do with my spare time.

In BlackOps 2 I stopped using primary weapons and only use the default handgun. I do this because I need a challenge, and yet I still come first place. I don't even try.

That's how good I am. Now send me a TitanFall code for Origin and I'll teach you.

I used to do that on MW3. Suppressed USP. The average CoD player is just too easy, especially on consoles. On PC my K/D was noticeably lower for Blops 2. There's some greats out there, though.

You're exactly the kind of player that I love playing with. If you're on my team, awesome, you're competent. If you're on the other team, awesome, I have a challenge.

I like to put analog and mouse sensitivity slightly above average, but I'm not one of those mlg pro kids that sets it to 9 or 10.
The problem with this post is that the guy you are showing us spent like 15 hours a day practicing. A lot of us maybe 2-3 hours a day to put into gaming, we can't dedicate 6-12 hours a day every single day on 1 game.

This is my mentality in games. I feel like Goku sometimes looking for challenges, putting self imposed limits on myself til I find someone who makes me want to fight.

I'm in the same boat. I play so much Quake and Doom in LAN/online that in BF and Counter Strike I always end up run and gun and get killed. I just don't have patience anymore.

Once upon a time I was halfway decent in the genre. I remember having a good ol' time with my Voodoo2 cards, Quake2, etc. I was even good with the original Battlefield. Then something happened: I slowly started to die more often. I think it happened in Battlefield 3, where I really started to suck. I just can't seem to hold my own anymore. Now I just die left and right.

I'm tempted to buy Titanfall, but I don't know how much fun I'll get out of the game.

Hey, I mean, you'll likely die a lot, but that doesn't mean you can't contribute and have fun.

I'm a bit different. Every time I play a game, it's like I've lost all the skill from last time and have to start over, building it up and getting into that groove again. So yeah, unless I have some seriously long playtime, I usually die quite a lot in the first 30 minutes.

But at the same time, I'm still having fun and not necessarily dragging my team down, so I'm still enjoying myself.

:)

What's unfair is that, he always had the aptitude to be that good. You could practice shooting hoops until you die, but you'll never be as good as Michael Jordan. My first game of online MP saw me killing the best MoHAA in the world at the time, and I didn't even know the maps yet. Someone will always be better, so all you can do is try and have fun.

Practice bro. Practice practice practice practice

It's okay, OP. Not every game is for everybody.

I suck at RTS games. I'm straight up awful at them.

I really don't see how people could suck in something like modern CODs. The mechanics are so easily exploitable that anyone should be able to figure them out, which should in return even the playing field making everyone suck equally but I guess not

There is a lot of skill involved in modern Fps's, especially CoD. Saying that everyone should be as good or bad as each other sounds really dumb. Watch extremely good players play and then see how normal people play and notice the huge different.

I'm pretty bad at them too, OP. What I do is that I then do intentionally stupid and disadvantaged shit to make it two fold, so then I can tell myself I did horrible just because of what I was doing haha. Like doing a red dot on a sniper with a silencer. "Oh now you need headshots, but it's way harder bahahaha".
Yeah, I know it can be done, but not by me, and that's my point.

I used to think the same thing, too. I was always really great at the old Rainbow games and even the early COD ones. Then something happened. It seemed each new game I was getting my ass handed to me more and more. I thought maybe it"s because I am getting old and my reflexes are lessening but I am great on most SP games on hard mode. Then I found out a fun little fact: LOTS OF PEOPLE USED MODDED EVERYTHINGS

Yup, little Jimmy from New Jersey isn't better than me, he has a modded controller. People have all sorts of crazy shit that gives them that slight edge that is just enough to get the jump on a non rule breaking player like myself.

Fuck em.

Shooters are like any other genre, like anything else in life, the more you practice the better you get. Its not rocket science.
Kerbal Space Program excluded lol

You're not alone OP. I suck at FPS or anything first person exploration games that has intensive camera motion due to motion sickness. It's the only game genre I don't play. I also suck at fighting games and I'm bad at racing games but it doesn't stop me from having fun in them (the fun is short-lived though).

I'm fucking awful at RTS and I assume I'm the worst SSF4 player in the universe.

Don't worry man.

No one cares about K/D if you capture bases or flags. There's more to FPS than slayer.
I played with this guy from work who said he was bad at FPS, told him to stick with me and the squad in BF3 by throwing ammo/health and revives while we took care of objectives. As time went by, he felt more confident about shooting enemies and while he was bad in TDM, his "feed" style or whatever was really useful at some fights, I swear. :P

I'm awful at FPS games, to the point where I'm regularly bested by people who don't even really play video games. First-person makes me feel disoriented and I'm awful at aiming just as a general mechanic in anything. The control scheme for FPS games also gives my hands cramps because I have weak muscles in my index/middle fingers.

I'm horrible at them also. I can never aim a thumbstick accurately and have a really hard time with making out enemy players. I usually just go with a shotgun or try to come up with some unorthodox style of play to have fun.

I suck at them too. Always have. Even during the Goldeneye days. I would always lose. I get disoriented too easily I would just get killed over and over trying to find my way out of a room. lol

Same in bf3 I usually just pick medic and revive other players it makes me feel good that I can contribute in a small way.

1) play domination, not attrition
2) I usually suck my first five or six hours in a game, then I get good. Takes time, man.

Me too. The last FPS I was legitimately good at was Resistance 1 and before that, Quake 3. I have always really liked Halo too though I've never been really great at it.

I miss FPS games that were built around guns with a specific purpose and the game gave you enough instruction or laid out levels/scenarios to coach you on how to use your arsenal. Not a fan of the real-life guns in popular shooters these days for that reason.

Also, like most sports games require you to know the sport to be good, these games assume you have some knowledge of real guns. FPS games now seem to be focused more on how well you can aim with a mish-mash of real life weapons then strategic weapon selection.

You feel worse because modern mechanics (like random weapon spread) flatten the skill curve, and make it easier for people to kill you. Whereas in something like Quake, it's really fucking hard to kill you if you're really good.

The good thing is OP. Being terrible at FPS is not as bad as it sound.

You can play objective based games and still have fun.

For people like me who are bad at racing or fighting games. We're pretty much screwed.

Play the objective.

No one cares about K/D if you capture bases or flags. There's more to FPS than slayer.

This train of thought needs to be stopped and debunked. You cannot effectively play the objective if there are enemies surrounding it; killing and threat management constitute a core aspect of shooters. Yes, there's obviously more to a player than K/D, but going for a win by willingly becoming cannon fodder will stunt your gameplay on a short and long term basis.

The OP doesn't need myopia. Don't feed it to him.

I feel you bro, I suck ass at FPS, too. I've tried to get into them, to play relatively competitive and competently. Not worth it to make up all that time, lol.

Seems a lot of people confuse being bad at something and lack of experience.

All it takes is practice, and generally not as much as you'd think either. It really doesn't take that much practice to be better than the average FPS player. The majority of players plateau pretty quickly because they just want to run around and spray and have no interest in really getting better.

Just look to your sides op. It's not hard, really. Your awareness of other people is much more important than how many headshots you can pull off.

I am just the worst at FPS yet I am pretty damn good at TPS, weird huh

That's exactly what I posted in the "stupid gaming questions" thread a while back. FPS with mouse/keyboard I am pretty good. TPS with a controler, good. FPS with a controler... awful. Just awful...

Apparently Titanfall is for you....

Seriously though in BF4/BF3 no one really cares about your K/D it's all about PTFO'ing, destroying enemy armour and defending/controlling objectives.

Sure a good K/D on top of all that is great but slowing the other team down from advancing or making them think twice is much more important.

I'm very average at most of them now. They're like anything else though, if you practice enough you get good at them. The FPS games where I had over 500 hours in I was pretty good at. Now that I'm older and cannot do that I'm very average.

It's OK though, as I've gotten older I've found I enjoy RPGs and MMOs more. I used to be in love with FPS but, that is dying out on me.

I'm very skilled in Black Ops II, but that's only because of how much time I've spent playing. Currently a Gold rank on league play, and can regularly go double positive in public matches.

Almost every other shooter, I'm fairly mediocre. My K/D is usually only slightly above 1.00

I haven't played online shooters competitively since CS1.6, and the problem is that CoDish shooters play very differently, from what I can tell. The most important tactics, correct me if I'm wrong, seem to be :

(1) Almost no recoil, you have to shoot more aggressively
(2) Avoid the center of the map, stick to perimeters, keep moving unless you have excellent cover. You have so little health that once you are spotted, you are already dead.
(3) Traverse the map clockwise or counter-clockwise to get an angle on players

I am mediocre at FPS and i suck at fighting games too
But i am godlike in racing, action-adventure and scrolling shooter games ;)

Set sensitivity to max should be the first thing you do in any FPS. Allow yourself to adjust to that and don't bother yourself wth the deaths you take as a result. Soon your reactions will be ahead of a majority of the players and you'll find that kills come easier.

Another thing is knowing when to rush and when to be patient. Rushing catches a lot of folks off guard and allows for multiple kills. Wrack em up then pull back and relocate to the opposite side of the map and do it again. Rinse & repeat. Your constant relocating keeps teams from getting the bead on you.

If your teammates have locked up the map, focus on the one opening opposing players will exploit and camp for kills. You'll be helping the team while not being a spawn camper which is nice.

Also, drink a beer (1-2) if you're old enough. Helps manage anxiety and calms the nerves. You'll also lose what I like to call "twitchy stix", wherein you get too excited and spin all over the place with your aiming. Twitch shooters require precise aiming so a split second miss means death.

Other than that, enjoy playing and don't let K/D ration bother you until you get the mechanics down. It'll improve as you improve.

Your name didn't happen to be Morpheus did it? Did you play the PC beta prior to release as well?

I suck at FPSs too. I don't have the amazing reaction time some people have. Don't feel bad.

I am interested in PvZ:GW though. Wonder if people are still playing it.

Best way to learn like other competitive games, is to have a good skilled group to roll with. They'll be able to carry the team, and give you space to discover your play style and learn from them.

Make sure they aren't try hards though. Having fun is priority.

I'm mediocre at worst and sometimes can pull out a pretty nice round. I don't really care about K/D ratio or anything like that I just try and have fun. When it isn't fun anymore then it is time to stop.

I find it goofy seeing people say to practice so you can enjoy a game. Firstly the game should be enjoyable right away you shouldn't have to put in huge amounts of time to reach a point where it's finally fun. Secondly if you're gonna spend huge chunks of time practicing you might as well be doing something that will give you a worthwhile benefit in the end like cooking or playing guitar or something like that.

It does seem like a bit of a waste seeing these high level players playing games, couldn't they make better use of their amazing skills doing something else.

If there is a huge skill disparity in a game the developers need to work on matching up more evenly matched players.

I am sorry but who are you to determine what is worthwhile or not to an individual?

I generally suck at fps too. I generally die more than I kill but I still have fun playing them.

It was the same when I played titanfall beta on the pc. Despite being owned a lot I had a big smile on my face.
