I almost exclusively play as female characters.

Mobile Suit Gooch

Grundle: The Awakening
Bare with me GAF since I have a hard time expressing myself.

This is something I noticed since towards the end of the last generation. I realized this when I started playing Borderlands 2. I picked the character Gaige since her designs were more appealing to me. I started my playthrough with her and I actually had fun since I didn't like those types of games before. Similar thing happen again when I played Diablo 3 as a female Demon Hunter (since it felt natural to me) I beat the game like three times. I felt that Tomb Raider (2013) was better than Uncharted 1 and 3 (I put 2013 and 2 on the same level.)

I think you get the point.

I'm a little bummed out about Persona 5 not that it was delayed but y'know the protagonist isn't female. Maybe next time?

Does anyone here have similar taste?

So are you saying that if Tomb Raider had a male lead and Nathan Drake was female, you'd prefer Uncharted? Even if they were the same games exactly in every other area.

A game is a game, I don't care about the gender of the polygons I am clicking around if the game is good.

Me, too OP. When given a choice I almost always choose female. The only exception is if I can choose Robot. Female Exo in Destiny was perfect.

Whenever I have the option, I also have always played female protagonists.

I play lots of games and love lots of games with male leads. But, if it's up to me, I make sure the chromosomes match.

I simply enjoy the game more this way.

Eh not exactly. I did find the combat in TR better than Uncharted but I preferred Uncharted's story.

i used to exclusively play as female characters to see if they had any sexy costumes or nude modes

i do not do this anymore as it is #nofap2016 and i shall no fap for the rest of the year

I usually never have mains to use in games where your character is interchangeable with any other character and nothing really changes.

If there's an advantage I play with them.

Also with persona what made you expect them to change?

They've only done femc twice and one was a side story and the other isn't canon but both are superior to other persona games

So do I, but gender doesn't determine quality of game for me. Like in the case of Tomb Raider vs Uncharted, one game is not better than the other for having a male or female lead.

Also, FemShep represent!

I use a FemShep
I use Aile and Ashe in the Mega Man ZX games
I use a female Magi in Dragon Age: Origins
I use primarily female in Diablo III, except my Wizard. I also have male versions for the "Reach LV 60 with 2 [class]"
I have an all-female team in Dragon Quest IX (modeled after the Nintendo Princesses)
I play as Peach in Mario Kart
I use Gaige as my secondary character in Borderlands 2

I've made a push to play more female characters in games as of late though not exclusively. It is nice more and more games are giving you the option to play both.

Fallout 4 is much better played as a female character. If not you literally get woman in the fridge'd lol.

I feel like, at least in many Western games, the female designs are almost always more appealing. Male Shepard looks awful unless you go with his default look, the male heroes in Diablo 3 all pale in comparison to their female counterparts, and the male Borderlands characters aren't as visually striking either (except for Zer0, who is masked, and perhaps Mordecai). There are exceptions, such as Geralt of Rivia or (divisive opinion incoming) Delsin from inFamous: Second Son, but for the most part male characters are less visually appealing. I used to exclusively play male characters in games because I am male, but starting with Mass Effect I've come to play as females much more often. I understand where you're coming from.

Dragon Age: Inquisition actually did a good job at making their male characters look cool. Loved my inquisitor in that game.

I tend to prefer female character models in games that offer the choice as male tends to be too bulky. Generally those games don't offer much in the way of characterisation though so it's more an aesthetic preference

I do really enjoy story based games with a female protag when done well, but seeing as these are in the minority and the average protag/writing quality in a game isn't great, they tend to be quite rare.

Tomb Raider, for instance, has a terrible lead character. Awful writing and VA make me dislike the game despite the mechanics being solid and fun. I much prefer Nathan in Uncharted simply because the quality of writing is superior. Hopefully as the disparity lessens it'll turn into a simple numbers game and we'll get more quality female protags to skim off the top.

God damn, that battler fire.

I don't OP, but if there are party members/assistants in a game I'll usually pick a girl. Not because I don't like the guy designs but having a lot of one gender doesn't have much balance.

More often than not, I choose characters based purely on aesthetics. And usually, female characters look better than their male counterparts to me. Ergo, I tend to play a lot of female characters.

In RPGs or games where you assume the role of the protagonist and there's customization, however, I often go male.

At the end of the day, it's just a tendency, and has no real bearing whether I'll play a game or not.

I honestly choose whatever gender I play depending on the game or just how I feel about it. I don't really play exclusively one or another.

Like, for example, on a Souls game or Bloodborne I always play male first because I feel they look more in tone on being a knight (or a badass hunter on Bloodborne), although I later do female characters too.
Same with Dragon's Dogma or Mass Effect or like, every RPG, I tend to use males.

For MMO I sometimes I use females simply because they seem to have more varied customization options, although it depends on the game too (on FFXIV I used a catgirl because they looked cooler, on PSO2 a male cause they look more badass and the girls are too fanservecey and look straight like dolls)

Shooters is another genre when I use females (like Battlefront nowadays), mainly because almost everyone else is male.

Overall, I don't care about genders and I play one or another depending on the game.

Never understood why this is important. I dont even get the "representation" angle as its still a video game. Who cares what you look like? Is the game good?

That said, it did tickle me that I pretty much could play as my ex-girlfriend in sunset overdrive. Shoutout to insominac for being one of the few devs that get black women faces right.

I always play as female and/or non-human character. I don't like to play as a white male protagonist (although I don't skip games because of that either). I'm 38, I'm white, I'm male, I'm heterosexual. I just hate the mainstream homogenous prototypes.

Riddle me that.

I usually play as guys because I'm a guy. I don't mind playing as a woman and kind of enjoy it but I'd just feel weird picking female at the character select screen since I'm not actually female.

It's funny, because this is exactly why I choose females. I've been a man all my life. I've done everything I've ever done as a man. That's why I value an opportunity to do things as a woman.

Yup, same here. I just prefer female protagonists / characters in general.

Lack of one won't stop me from playing a game, but I'd be lying if I said that having a female lead didn't sway my interests.

I disagree with Geralt if only for the fact the last game he merely played a small role when Ciri was center stage. In fact I hope if they go back to the Witcher series we get to explore as Ciri.

I really regret not going fem shep in the later games. I hear the VA does a great job in 2 and 3.

Well if I have a choice I play female (and I'm annoyed if I can't and they let you choose your character) and I like it when I get to play a female when I don't have a choice.. but I'm female.

But I do know of at least one male I play with online who very much prefers female characters even more than I care about it (the only time it truly upsets me I can't play a female is if they give you a choice and you still can't play female. though some games I do dream of them having a female character like GTA. It would be so awesome to play a female criminal in GTA in the single player mode. Of course I'm female in MP).

I don't have a problem playing male characters though when it's more story based. Just would like it if there were more games that had females as your main character.

Male or female, doesn't matter to me in the slightest.

Also are you just rating Tomb Raider over Uncharted just because you play as a woman? I understand perhaps feeling more invested in that or it being more relatable.

But nope, can't relate at all. It's a video game, I'll play as a worm if the game proposes it.

Though if a game gives you a choice to pick a pre-selected character or make one from scratch, women should always be represented.

For open world games with customisable options I like to play as some type of Jenette Vasquez warrior lady.
...but since most of those games lack a muscle slider and all women models are generally skinny I just go with some super old looking bloke instead.

If I have a choice, I'll usually play female. The exception to this is races like the Elin in TERA.

I don't skip games and I'm not upset if I have to play a male character, though.

I never play as a female character unless it's the only option, but it's not like the gender matters to me. As long as they're an interesting character.

If the options available i go female MC.
Years of dude with gun or boy saves world burned me out on male protags with the exception of long running legacy male protags.(snake, geralt)

Whenever there's a choice, I invariably play as a female character. However where there's no choice the gender doesn't really bother me that much.

I don't really see how male or female affects my enjoyment of the game.
Especially with Uncharted, since Drake was the much more interesting character and I liked the game a lot more in general.
If Drake wasnt drake it would lower my enjoyment. Him being a her doesn't suddenly make a product better in a lot of cases, same to the opposite.
