I almost got into a car accident today ( Dash Cam)

Glad you're okay, OP. In regards to this part, what do you (and other posters who have one) recommend? Looks like there's a ton of options out there. Any advice would be appreciated.

Same. I'm also in CA and have heard mixed things about what's legal or not.

I'll look into the Transcend 520 dual cam though. Glad you're ok OP.

Of course it was someone driving a truck. I'm not saying most people who drive trucks drive like assholes, but it feels like most asshole drivers drive trucks.

I got the Black Box G1W-CB dash cam (~$60). Works good as a basic dash cam but whenever I get my next car I'm gonna spend a few extra dollars on a better camera and do a better setup (right now its just suctioned cup and loose usb cable to cigarette lighter charger that I take the camera off everytime I get out of the car).

I just recently got into an accident where a dash cam could have saved me.

A guy cut me off- he was changing lanes when there wasn't enough space. He actually stopped dead mid lane change. I tried to stop but couldn't brake in time and rear ended him. But because it was all so quick, and he wasn't fully in the lane, we hit at an angle. The corners of our cars collided.

My insurance is backing me up 0% at fault, but he completely fabricated a story about how I hit him from behind in the middle of an intersection while making a turn. I expected he'd say I should have stopped in time, or given him more room, or something like that, but not a total BS story. My insurance is defending me in the dispute, going to arbitration with the other insurance company.

Anyways long story short: I am getting a dash cam.

I had a very similar experience a couple of weeks ago on a roundabout that had traffic lights. Emerged onto the roundabout once the green light showed and a car shot through the red. I could have sworn he was going to hit me so i grabbed the wheel with both hands, hit the brake hard and braced myself.

The funny thing, is that it was the other driver that sounded his horn and started throwing extremities at me! I was so shook up that i just looked at him with a gormless face and and pointed to the Red light he just jumped.

I had to take a break after that, i stopped on a side street and got a drink of water.

I had a guy pull out from a left turn onto a 50 mph road right in front of me last week. Barely avoided him, had to slam on the brakes and swerve, and it was the first time I laid on the horn at someone. I wanted him to realize he fucked up. Maybe next time he'll look before he pulls out.

I'm so sorry.

Also no wonder you have trouble dating. Whenever I go back there I'm shocked by the "quality" of the girls. You need to move and never look back.

lol yeah, but hopefully I'll get a fresh start in Denver by next year, moving to an actual city. Should be interesting

That's the reason why I always look both ways when I'm the first one into the intersection after a light has changed. The amount of money and lives that would be saved if the DOT simply added a few seconds between the red and green transition is probably huge. But no, they rather spend a ton of money on red light cameras that only punish instead of preventing.

I rarely see people use turn signals to change lanes, people don't know how to drive.
=.

glad you are ok OP. But this is because in California if you use your signal its an alert for the car behind you in the lane you are trying to turn into to speed up and not let you over

A similar scenario happened to me but I was a pedestrian. I crossed the street on my signal (which happens to be a green light over here) and this driver proceeds to run her red light. She didn't notice the light I bet. I simply stopped in my track and whatched the car pass right in from of me. You know what saved me? The sound of the engine. I had been listening to headphones, I might have gotten hit. Crazy people out there.

Glad you're still with us OP.

I was looking at them a couple months back, probably should've bought one, ideally a dual camera. I would've loved to had known what happened to the lower side of my driver side doors that got messed up while my mother was borrowing my car. -.-

While also seeing the idiot barrel through a red light, I too thought that green was really short. Enough time for maybe 1 or 2 cars to go through. Sup with that?

Weighted lights usually turn after right there's nobody else crossing.

Are people really that surprised about how short that green light was? I've seen green lights last shorter than yellow lights quite a few times.

Glad you were safe about crossing, what an asshole.

Funny enough I had to swerve out of my lane to avoid an accident this morning on the golden gate. Guy was directly next to me (I could see him through my window) and decided he was going to change lanes without looking. Had to stamp on the accelerator as someone was close behind my left in the opposite lane.

Man I was pissed. The person realized how fucking idiotic they were though because they hung back a few hundred feet from me after.

To relate this to the thread I don't know how a dash cam would have helped me given he was directly parallel.

This is not a rare occurrence in California FYI. I've witnessed so many fender benders and accidents in the last 3 months. It's terrifying how ridiculously bad some people are.

How does a dash cam work, and how can they save you from an accident? Is there a screen and does it somehow show more of the road than you can see in the driver's seat?

Or are they used specifically so you can record events and nab license plates?

The latter

I don't think dash cams can be submitted as evidence.

I'd keep it more for insurance purposes, where they specifically can be used. I only think they can't be used in a criminal trial because it's a recording of an unwilling participant.

But I'm no lawyer. I need to get one because all sorts of people jump out from behind SUV's wearing all black in the middle of the night where I live

Wow that's basically the Venus Williams situation, except the car going through the red had a clear view of the intersection. Glad you were paying attention and nothing happened.

Glad you are ok OP. I had an idiot do this in a damn Semi truck the other week, even peolple in his lane were slamming on their horns. I was dumbfounded....and happy to be alive.

USB from car, uses a memory card that lasts a couple of days and then loops over the video, Turns on when I turn on my car and the dash cam has it's own battery, mine has motion detect. So if something moves your car, it wakes up and starts recording.

When my parked car got hit by some girl it recorded that
Yes, can you link to the cam you have?

If I wasn't paying attention, so many things could of happened. If I was only looking straight to if I went a little faster, that guy had a passenger in that truck.

Close call op.

My commute has one of these quick lights. In the morning, you got people not paying attention causing gridlock when they all pile through trying to beat the unbeatable light.

Good reflexes. Had plenty of time to stop before the truck reached you. Some people just see green and floor it and don't actually check to see if traffic has stopped.

God Damn I need a dash cam. How much them fuckers cost and what's a good reliable brand that works and is simple to install?

I've wanted to get a dash cam for a while but haven't made the leap yet. For those of you who have, how do you deal with the power cord? I don't like the idea of a dangling power cord dropping straight down to the cigarette adapter (especially since mine is in the armrest), and any cable would dangle down in front of the radio/nav and shifter.

Depends on the car, just search for your car model + dashcam installation online.

In my car, it goes into the headliner near where the interior rearview mirror is, then runs down behind the a-pillar trim and into my glove box (from behind the hinge). I have a second power outlet there. Not even visible unless someone looks real close.

I capture something dangerously stupid or illegal on a weekly basis. I actually have a saved video I took just yesterday of a guy pulling right the fuck out in front of me in a roundabout and then having the nerve to get indignant at me, like I'm the one who doesn't know how roundabouts work. My cam doesn't record audio unfortunately, because you should have heard the dehumanizing shit I yelled out the window at him.
