• Hey Guest. Check out your NeoGAF Wrapped 2025 results here!

I am addicted to Spelunky!

I both hate and love it. I don't know. I'm in a bad position now though, basically having mastered the mine but for different reasons not unlocking the shortcut to the temple. So I'm getting a bit burned out playing through the temple over and over again. But I love the mechanics, and it looks fantastic on Vita! Is it just me or is it ugly on other platforms? From what I've seen on youtube anyway.

PC version looks just as good as Vita version IMO, so I guess that's only bad recording/ripping or something?

anyway: if anyone wants to add me for leaderboards and dailies for the Vita version:

PSN: VileRoboleon

wtf spelunky is on vita..... shit shit shit I think I'll finally get a vita then o_O
Cross-platform purchase on PSN, so you can play it on your PS3 too after buying it on Vita (or vice versa).

For what it's worth, the shortcuts aren't particularly important. They handicap you more than anything if you're attempting 'serious' runs, unless you simply want to know what a given world may contain.

I'll add some people on PSN later when I get home, but anyone can feel free to add me as well! Same name as here, Celegus. I'm by no means great at the game, but it would be fun to have people to compare with!

oh god damnit. for the first time I had all the things. nice big hole made for Olmec, once more bounce and he's my platform for the ultimate goal. Got excited and my hand spazzed out, he squished me and then broke through the bottom to set off the chime.

I'm getting closer now, I never realised how horribly important bombs combined with the spider silk was. Better than shotgun and arguably more important than jetpack (jetpack and shotgun is so great though).

Almost 800 times played and I'm still learning new things. On the daily challenge today I ran into the
orange frog who exploded a kali altar
and was still able to sacrifice to half an altar. I got enough corpses to get all the way back into invigoration but the item I got was a bomb box. Never knew you could use a broken altar and I also never knew you could get bombs from it, I guess I had every eligible item pickup by that point.

Of course I died to an arrow trap that knocked me into a mummy corner instead of running right into an easy exit. Because I'm selfish and Spelunky.

Could use more gaffers to compare to for the daily runs.

Steam: http://steamcommunity.com/id/erudite/

PSN: Traced-Velocity

Been really getting into the dailies recently.

I'd love to have some regular players to compete with on leaderboards. Can't add anyone now as I'm not at home, but I'll throw down my accounts:

steam: http://steamcommunity.com/id/crookshow/
psn: crookshow

I think I need some people on my list to make me take the daily more seriously.

Steam: http://steamcommunity.com/id/remachinate

I need to populate my daily challenge list. Will add people later. In the meantime, this is me!

Steam: http://steamcommunity.com/id/tm24/
PSN: mightytm24

Added also please add I'm lonely http://steamcommunity.com/profiles/76561198086033107/

I believe I added everyone on this page. If anyone else wants more competition on their leaderboards feel free to add me, too.

/edit/ make sure to write a short note identifying you as a GAFer.

I've been playing Spelunky for a couple of weeks and it is amazing. I'd say it certainly belongs in the "best platformer ever" conversation. I've only made it to the Temple once so far but I love the challenge. I don't understand how some people consider it to be unfair; very rarely have I felt like any death in the game was a result of anything but my own mistakes. The controls are basically flawless and the atmosphere is fantastic -- deeply immersive in its own way due to the level of focus it demands.

The Wii U pro controller is perfect for this game, by the way. That d-pad...

Today's daily challenge on PC went pretty smoothly. Collected little over a million, though I messed up cracking one vault open on 3-3. Completely my own fault.

Just visited the Mothership for the first time
and died, shoul've stayed on track and gone for the Ironman run..
. Game keeps surprising me!

Has anyone taken the key to the tunnel man before the temple?

I know shortcuts are useless but it seems like a fun challenge.

I did, it's fun to do it, and it's great for practicing the temple!

I just added a bunch of you to my Steam friends list. If you get an invite from RogueCarrot, that's me. (It would be nice if we could send a message when adding friends so we could mention we're GAF members so the other person knows it's not just some random user)

http://steamcommunity.com/id/RogueCarrot

Also, can someone from the NeoGAF group invite me in? It's private now so I can't join.

I just did it, but now I'm disappointed since it's apparently pointless...

Being pretty new to the game I'm not sure what's bad about shortcuts.

Being pretty new to the game I'm not sure what's bad about shortcuts.

The main "bad" thing about shortcuts is that when you use them, you can't pick up all the good stuff from the earlier / easier levels - the stuff you will (most likely) need to beat the game. I mean, it's kind of worth it to unlock the shortcuts, so you can practice the mechanics of the later levels when you aren't good enough to get to them regularly, but it's probably much more useful just to spend your time learning to get better at the earlier levels, so eventually they become pretty easy and a great place to build up money / items / health / etc for hell runs and mastering the game.

Ah, makes sense. Thanks.

I should clarify, they are useless for beating the game because it leaves you without a plethora of items.

However, they are very useful for practicing each area.

Wow, GAF. You must be my lucky charm cause:
D59D4969C99537B5BAAC3D4FE6CA9970B0E3A331

Aww yeeeeeahhh! Got the Iron Man achievement too, I don't use no shortcuts! So close to the Big Money achievement though :(
Sadly it wasn't the daily. So i'm gonna attempt that now.

I would add you but there's like 10 Hollow's?

http://steamcommunity.com/id/TheHollowNight/

I managed to beat the game using shortcuts just fine (actually that's the only way I've been able to beat the game but don't judge me). Of course your time and score won't get posted to the leaderboards if you use them (which doesn't really matter since your score would probably suck anyway).

Yep. That's the only reason to get the shortcuts.

But damn if I haven't been having a hell of a time getting to the Ice Caves one last time with a shotgun to unlock it so I can practice. I've been to the Ice Caves maybe thrice if not four times. Once on a Daily Challenge. (At which time I had a shotgun with me and forgot Tunnel Man doesn't show up there during Dailies.) Now I'm having a hell of a time getting there with one again. lol

Edit: I really wish they'd release a Mac version, even if it's just a WINE wrapper. (I play in Parallels and it runs like butter. A Mac WINE version would be perfectly fine. Should I Tweet Mossmouth and whoever does the PC port maybe?)

this thread is blowing up lately.

Spelunky!

im planning on adding a bunch of people here for PSN leaderboards (Vita! PS3 version blows), hopefully tomorrow. why the hell cant you add friends on the website...?

anyways PSN ID: Dwight_Frye

I almost beat Olmec today but the stickly gloves caused me to stick to the wall and Olmec to catch me. :(

Here's my url if you guys want to add me: http://steamcommunity.com/id/abombb

tell me about it! im getting a lot better at not hating them, but gloves have gotten me killed so many times.

just today i was well on my way to beating Olmec in the daily. i had tons of supplies, but on 4-2 i was trying to slip out the exit past an angry shopkeeper, dropped downto the exit and jammed on the button to enter, but i got latched onto the tiki trap by the door and didnt realize quick enough before i got speared.

ive gotten killed at the Olmec fight a bunch of times by sticking onto him or the wall as well. i need to just keep using them and get over it though since they are so useful (ive passed up getting them so many times in the past because of my fear of them, especially when i have a jetpack! that is the worst combo). sticking to stuff at the wrong time is just another thing that you need to teach yourself not to do to avoid getting killed!

Any suggestions of a good guide/wiki to look at for beginner strategies, tips, tricks, etc? I haven't played the game in months but would like to get back into it. I sort of forgot what everything does though...

lots of tips and a few write ups in this thread and in the OT in Community.

heres demidar's tips from page 5 of this thread, for one example:

Okay I'm gonna drop some tips:

General/Items
-You can walk through spikes, they are only deadly if you fall on them.
-You can break your fall by landing on an enemy.
-The Jetpack is the most useful item, but it costs $20,000+ and can make some people play recklessly.
-An alternate item combo is Climbing Gloves and Cape, which isn't too bad and can save you if you essentially fall to your death in the Ice Caves.
-The Spring Boots (increase jump height to 2, grab on to the edge of blocks 3 high) are one of the best mobility items for its price.
-Buying bombs is never not wasted, unless you're planning on killing Shopkeepers.
-Unless you are explicitly going for a high score run, you can safely ignore money from the Ice Caves forward since shops very rarely appear past that point.
-You can lower yourself safely on to spikes if you're slowfalling with the Cape, or are climbing down on to it on a rope.
-The Spiked Boots not only allow you to not slide on ice terrain, but also increases your damage when you jump on enemies and allows jump damage on enemies that are normally immune to it.
-The Altar of Kali is a very useful thing, sacrificing a living damsel or hired hand rewards you with a random equippable item (as opposed to being held), and another gives you the Kapala, which gives you 1 heart every 8 blood droplets you collect (the red spheres that drop out of damaged enemies). 4 (8?) corpses count for 1 damsel, 2 (4?) unconscious enemies count for 1 damsel (numbers might be slightly wrong).
-The Pitching Mitt is underrated, it makes you throw completely horizontally - including bombs - and removes drop due to gravity. It allows you to deliver bombs from across the map to kill certain bosses safely.
-You can pick up shop items without buying them like you would a rock, which you can use to kill Shopkeepers. Boomerangs, Shotguns, Machetes and Ice Guns work the best.
-Boomerangs and Machetes can damage knocked out foes.
-You can relight torches by touching lit wall torches.
-Tiki traps can only extend spikes in a single direction.
-The Camera is the only weapon that has an effect on the Ghost.

The Mines
-City of Gold run: You need to collect a golden key and carry it to the locked chest to get the Udjet Eye. The Udjet Eye allows you to see gems and items embedded in walls. The key and locked chest can appear in any level of the Mines.

-Always look down if you can't see the bottom.
-You can pick up rats and other assorted animals, damsels, dead bodies etc. to catch arrows fired from arrow traps if you can't trigger them otherwise, even if you hold them away from the incoming arrow o_O.
-You can also outright dodge the arrows if you fall fast enough at about 5+ blocks away from arrow trap BUT
-Watch out for the arrow coming back down after striking a wall.
-You can kill giant spiders by tossing a bomb in to their webs, as long as you don't directly hit and aggro them.
-If there is a Relic on the same level as a merchant shop, you can place a bomb on the relic platform so the boulder will tunnel downwards instead of sideways. Be careful of merchant vaults though (the enclosed areas with a merchant inside).
-If you can help it, carry an item between levels in case the start of the next level has an arrow trap with nothing to trigger it with (which you can trigger with a bomb, but that's a waste of resources). You can't carry rats through levels though :(
-I hear snakes!: There is always a Mattock at the bottom of snake pits, which you can use to directly tunnel to the exit, or if you've got the Udjet Eye (the thing you get from the locked chest) mine for gems (aim for rubies which are the most expensive gem I think).
-I hear snakes!: Drop a rock down the pit to trigger most of the arrow traps that are sure to line its walls.

The Jungle
-City of Gold run: The Udjet Eye will flash on the level with the entrance to the Black Market, the closer you are to the entrance the more frequent the flashing. You'll likely need a lot of bombs to destroy the walls blocking the entrance though. In the Black Market, you'll need to buy the Ankh for $50,000 from the merchant at the far right and to the bottom. Or kill all the merchants, that works too. The Ankh revives you with 4 health at the entrance to the level when you die.

-Mantraps (the red plants with teeth) CANNOT be stomped, and will instantly kill you if you touch them. Kill them with thrown items or shotgun blasts, or whip them if you have no recourse.
-Chieftains wielding Boomerangs will only throw when they see something in front of them, and they don't turn around unless they hit an edge.
-If you've got a shotgun, you should always try killing the bees by deploying a rope, getting in to position and firing directly in to their nest.
-If not, you can use sticky bombs to kill the queen (it looks different from the other bees), and killing it yields Royal Jelly, an item that gives 4 hearts (which is amazing).
-If you have neither of those, you can blow a hole directly above the nest and just jump on them as they come out.
-You might come across those spike pits where there are vines and monkeys hanging above it. A good way to get past it is to place a bomb on the 2 block high edge to remove the wall, and you can safely walk through the spikes as the monkeys kill themselves on the spikes. Or just blow up the floor and go through that. Or use a cape/rope to safely lower yourself on to the spikes.
-If you are scared of tiki traps, blow them up. They won't outright kill you, they deal 5 damage, but at that time into the game it's unlikely you'll have more than 5 hearts.
-The dead are restless!: There is a shotgun under the grave marked ASH. You can also see the shotgun with the Udjet eye or Spectacles.
-The dead are restless!: Vampires drop Capes but are tricky to kill. The easiest way is to land a Sticky Bomb.
-Secret Level:
The Worm: You can gain access to The Worm from this biome or the Ice Caves. See those sticky fleshy red balls that you can jump in to? You can toss a Damsel in to them, and after 5 seconds The Worm will come out of the wall and consume anyone on the red ball. The Crysknife can only be found in here.
-Secret Level:
The Haunted Castle: You can enter the Haunted Castle only from the Restless Dead levels. If you see a gravestone with a crown mark on it, and skeletal remains under it, the entrance is one block directly below the skeletal remains but you have to blow up the walls surrounding it. The Shield can only be found in here.

Secret Level
The Worm
-This level is very claustrophobic and vertical, so Climbing Gloves or a ton of ropes will help, as well as some bombs.
-There are a lot of spike pits, always look down before you fall.
-Probably don't touch the acid...Acid deals damage slowly (PKrockin).
-The bacteria enemies move along walls, can be stopped (not killed) with a whip attack or a shotgun blast, and deal 1 damage on contact which they disappear afterwards. These are what makes the level dangerous and can only be destroyed by bombs/explosives. You can't jump on them either I don't think.
-If you attack egg sacs before they "hatch", you'll kill all the enemies inside, not that they are that dangerous if they hatch anyway.
-In the largest vat of acid will reside the Crysknife. Blow up the bottom of the vat to drain the acid and grab the weapon. Warning, if you blow it up from the bottom the falling acid might hurt you (never tested it).
-The Crysknife instantly kills anything it hits, but it doesn't leave a body that you can sacrifice to Kali. It replaces the basic whip attack.

Secret Level
The Haunted Castle
-There are a lot of humanoid enemies in this level that normally can't be hurt by being stomped. You can if you have Spiked Boots though.
-This level is guaranteed to have an Altar of Kali, and combined with the numerous humanoid enemies in this level lets you get the Kapala much easier (someone in this thread already pointed that out though).
-The layout of this level is very zig-zaggy and easy to navigate, and there aren't any traps either (I think).
-It is possible to find the entrance to the Black Market in this level.
-Armoured Knights can't be damaged unless you jump on them with Spiked Boots, or blow them up with bombs.
-The Black Knight is the boss of this level, and he goes crazy when he sees you, running back and forth. He carries The Shield which acts like a movable reflector wall. If you've got Sticky Bombs just toss one on him and run like hell. Careful though, if The Shield flies in to you and catches you in front of a wall it will crush you causing instant death.
-The Shield is an item carried in the hands, it reflects Shotgun blasts and acts like a wall allowing you to crush enemies. The Shield does not protect you from explosives.
-WARNING: Don't place bombs while holding The Shield. If you do it close enough to a wall, the bomb gets crushed by your Shield and blows up in your face dealing 10 damage.

The Ice Caves
-City of Gold run: If you see a giant Moai statue, you can kill yourself in the level (you don't need to be next to the Moai statue like in the free PC version) and you will respawn inside the statue with 4 health, where a Hedjet will drop on to you (wait a bit so you don't enter the next level without it). The Hedjet doesn't really do anything besides allowing access to the City of Gold.

-Merchants become a lot rare from here on out, lessening the impact of getting money unless you are going for a high score. Don't take risks getting money if you just want to finish the game.
-While Spiked Boots are advantageous here, it's not necessary to do well here, you just have to be more careful.
-Climbing Gloves can save you from certain death if you fall past the lowest floor.
-The Jetpack makes this level a breeze.
-Landing on a jump pad nullifies the fall damage you would otherwise take.
-Yetis can't be whipped, but they
can be chopped up by the Crysknife
. They will throw you if you touch them which can easily lead to death as this level doesn't have a contiguous bottom floor to land on safely. You can stomp yetis barefoot.
-Mammoths can be easily killed if you have Spiked Boots by chain jumping on their heads/backs. You can't hurt them without bombs/shotguns/
the Crysknife
otherwise. You could try whipping them though but you might as well avoid them at that rate. Mammoths can drop Freeze Rays (PKrockin).
-If you damage a UFO they will explode on contact with the floor. They ricochet off walls and can strike you on rebound. The safest way to kill them is to toss a rock at them, or jump on their "heads" using a Jetpack.
-There is usually an Altar of Kali in these levels. If you've been sacrificing dead bodies this will likely be the place where you will get your Kapala.
-Angered merchants will likely run off the edge to their deaths.
-I sense a psychic presence!: There will be a downed spaceship with an Alien Brain behind some force fields. The Alien Brain will die to one bomb. The force fields activate every few seconds and sustain for 3 seconds, will reflect shotgun pellets and block Sticky Bombs (they won't stick and act like regular bombs hitting a wall). You can blow up the force field emitter to disable them permanently. There is a Jetpack in the wall directly behind the Alien Brain. The Alien Brain fires off homing purple projectiles that will instantly kill you if you touch them so be vigilant!
-It smells like wet fur in here!: This level is more enclosed than normal Ice Cave levels. Around the midsection there is a Yeti King, who screams to send down icicles on top of you. The scream can also knock you out. He only screams when you're close and in front of him so try and bomb him or shoot him from afar.
-It feels like the Fourth of July!: Always appears on the last level of the Ice Caves (3-4). Contains a shaft consisting of alien ship blocks. Besides that, is a normal level.
-Secret Level:
Alien Mothership: Entrance is at the top of alien shaft. Don't enter unless you have Climbing Gloves, a lot of bombs or a Jetpack since it's possible to get trapped. The Alien Rifle can only be found in here.
-You can enter the Secret Level
The Worm
here as well as from the Jungle.

Secret Level
The Alien Mothership
-You need a lot of bombs to do well here, otherwise just try and get out of the level.
-The exit is near the top of the level, you start at the bottom.
-It is possible to get trapped in this level if you don't have ropes, a Jetpack or Climbing Gloves with Sticky Bombs if you blow up the moving platforms.
-This level is filled with Alien Brains so be on guard for purple projectiles.
-Alien Tanks will fire bombs which can knock you out if they hit you, then blow you up. Otherwise they are likely to blow themselves up.
-There are UFOs everywhere, take them out with a thrown item or a Jetpack+Shotgun/Whip combo. I'm afraid I don't know how they react to getting hit with the Crysknife however, probably blow up in your face.
-Near the top, you'll see a targeting reticule on top of your character. This is Mother Brain's attack, the boss of the level. It doesn't move, but if you get hit it's an instant death.
-Mother Brain goes down in one bomb, but she's behind multiple layers of force fields. If you've got the Pitching Mitt you can toss bombs across the level at her to kill her safely but it will take more than a few bombs. Otherwise take out all the other Alien Brains for safety then start blowing up the force field emitters while dodging Mother Brain's blasts, then blow her up when you get a clear shot. Remember that force fields reflect Shotgun pellets.
-The Alien Rifle is right below Mother Brain, and can be extracted without killing Mother Brain by blowing up the floor it's on from below.
-The Alien Rifle is a very high risk, high reward weapon. It's essentially a bomb gun, firing projectiles that blow up terrain and deals about 10-20 damage per hit. It has MASSIVE recoil, knocking you back about 4 blocks so if you're not careful you could throw yourself down a pit, into spikes, in front of arrow traps, on to crushing traps, etc. On top of that, you might blow yourself up if you're firing line isn't as clear as you think it is. It's firing rate is once every three seconds. You will likely kill yourself with this gun the first time you get it because the power gets to your head. It is ideal that you have a Jetpack while using the Alien Rifle to recover from the knockback.

The Temple
(spoilered for people who want to learn how to navigate this place themselves)
-City of Gold run:
Kill the Anubis firing purple projectiles at you, the same projectiles that Alien Brains fire. They take one or two bombs to kill, or a shot from the Alien Rifle. The Anubis will drop a Scepter which you need to carry to a golden door with a slit in it, and you NEED the Hedjet from the Ice Caves as well to get the door open. The Anubis appears in 4-1, and the golden door appears in 4-2, always (confirmed by PKrockin). The Scepter is a dangerous weapon to hold, it fires purple projectiles that home in to the closest entity (so that includes damsels) that is not the player at very high speeds, which sticks on to humanoids even after death. The purple blasts can knock enemies towards you with the projectile close behind, and the projectiles CAN KILL YOU even though you fired them. For more information about The City of Gold see the next Secret Level block.

-This level is probably the hardest in the game, there are a lot of things to watch out for.
-Arrow traps return, in conjunction with tiki traps, leading to very dangerous layouts. Blow them up if you feel like you won't be able to get through without getting hurt.
-Crushing traps appear for the first time, they look like Thwomps from Mario games with a single eye. If you move into a space that is in a line north/south/east/west of a crushing trap it will fly in that direction and try and crush you. They can only be killed with bombs. Careful walking down long hallways since they sometimes sit at the end. Touching them won't damage/kill you.
-Don't engage Crocmen, they teleport to avoid damage and can telefrag you if you're unlucky. Not even Sticky Bombs can kill them. The only way to kill them is to get them to teleport in to solid blocks. Their teleport behaviour is the same as the Teleporter item: will teleport 4-8 blocks forward and if there's a solid block, upwards up to 3 blocks from that point, and if there's another solid block, will cause death. They might also die to the Scepter blasts (confirmation needed).
-Mummies can be killed by chain stomping them with Spiked Boots, attaching a Sticky Bomb or blasting them with a Shotgun. They aren't dangerous though as long as you don't stand in front of them, but they can turn around at will to face you.
-If you have the Alien Rifle here, always take in consideration where you will fly back when you pull the trigger.
-Unlike water and acid, bombs explode on contact with lava, which means you can't drain them by throwing a bomb into lava pools from above as they won't reach the bottom. You can still drain them by blowing up the walls containing the lava though.
-I hear prayers to Kali!: There will be a pit with a damsel and an Idol at the top. Picking up the damsel doesn't trigger trap (confirmed by PKrockin) but picking up the Idol will remove the floor beneath them. The pit ends in a lava pool with rubies embedded in the blocks at the bottom of the pool.
-The boss is Olmec, and he's a giant golden head. His only attack to to drop on your head: If you are directly below his width, he will stop, then crash down after 1 second. When he crashes down, he may also release 3 enemies from the gem on his head via glowing circles. Standing on Olmec's head doesn't kill you, though you might suffer fall damage if Olmec falls long enough. To kill Olmec, you need to make him crash through the bottom layer where he will sink in to the lava.
-There are chests and item boxes at the top of the boss room, which you can reach with ropes, climbing gloves or a Jetpack.
-True End Level:
You need the Necronomicon from the City of Gold. In the boss room there is a door just above the lava and in order to gain entrance you need to stand on Olmec's sinking head and possess the Necronomicon.

Secret Level
The City of Gold
-Don't let your guard down, this level is dangerous as well. There are crushing traps and lots of mummies.
-Every block you destroy will yield gold, which is why it's necessary for a really high score.
-In the middle of the level, there is a tomb with the Necronomicon (it's a book with a face on it) on top of a sarcophagus, which you can enter by blowing up the walls.
-When you pick up the Necronomicon, Super Anubis spawns in just above the sarcophagus. He summons red skeletons and fires off projectiles with his scepter. He can be killed as easily as Anubis though, a few Sticky Bombs will drop him. He does not drop a Scepter.
-Red skeletons can just be whipped to death.
-You can't exit the level until you kill Super Anubis.Apparently he can follow you in to the next level. (PKrockin)

True End Level
Hell
-This level is probably easier than the temple, but there are new things to watch out for.
-The first level (5-1) contains Vlad, a vampire boss. He acts like a regular vampire though, and can be easily killed with a Sticky Bomb. He is as the top of the tower on the side of the level, which is also filled with regular vampires.
-Embedded in a block at the top of Vlad's tower is a Fire Amulet, which makes you immune to lava and lava men. Very useful.
-Vlad drops Vlad's Cape, which acts like a normal Cape except activating it will make you "glide" upwards like a double jump and then the slowfall kicks in. Unlike the regular Cape though if you cancel the slowfall you can't reactivate it, so you may prefer the regular Cape due to familiarization.
-Succubus disguise themselves as damsels, and act like monkeys i.e. they jump on you then after a second or two leap off, except succubus deal 1 damage. If you've got a Kapala though you're better off just killing everything and collecting their blood for health.
-Imp's carry pots that they drop if you're directly below them so watch the skies. They can be killed by stomping them or whipping them.
-There are spinning spiked ball traps that only damage you if you touch the ball so you can safely touch the chain. If you destroy their anchor block they will detach and act like boulders from The Mines. Do it if you want to clear the level but it might be dangerous.
-Tiki traps are everywhere. If you have Climbing Gloves be extra careful you don't grab on to the side of one.
-The boss is King Yama, he's got two phases. He is fairly hard to take down without a Shotgun however (which at this point can only be gotten by incensed Shopkeepers). His head is where you need to deal damage, and he spawns imps and lava men and slams his fists if you get close to him. The second phase is much more dangerous, his head starts floating and ping-ponging at the top of the level between walls. Whenever you don't have cover above your head Yama will slam the roof and drop 3 skulls on you, making it very hard to damage him as they will knock you out of the air and possibly on to spikes. A Shotgun can kill him using it's spread while under cover, otherwise try and toss Sticky Bombs at his head. If you have a Jetpack, fly up when he's at the other side off-screen and fire a couple of Shotgun shells.
-When you first enter King Yama's chamber, there are two mini-bosses on either side to you, around the edge of your screen in distance. Simply shoot them with your Shotgun or blow them up with bombs, although the floor is only one block thick so be careful if you blow holes in it.

Hope this helps at least one person.

plenty of other reading to do around in these threads as well. the best learning is done playing the game alot though.

It'll be nice having more than just one friend on my Spelunky Leaderboards.

I just wish all the versions used the same leaderboard instead of having separate PlayStation, Xbox and Steam boards. If only there were a technical way they could do it.

Also, I watched BaerTaffy play the upcoming update. Can't wait for the new HUD and other small features. I really hope a Mac/Linux version is in the cards. It'd be nice to not have to load up Parallels just to Spelunk.
