I am addicted to Spelunky!

This game is like crack. PS3/Vita crossbuy is just not healthy for me. I'm going to stop playing this game.

...well 1 more run couldn't possibly hurt. Yeah, just 1 more run to get it out of my system then I'm deleting this.

I probably shouldn't have entered the Haunted Castle for the first time during a daily challenge. The damn knights got me.

Y'know. I don't really get it. Spelunky is one of those games I can tell is objectively really good, but for some reason I personally am not pulled into it.

I can see it's an impeccably-designed game with a shitload of thought put into balancing each and every one of its mechanics. It's also impressive how the game utterly obeys its own rules in all aspects.

But for some reason, I fail to find a singular "hook" that pulls me into the game and keeps me coming back. I've been into Rogue Legacy way more than Spelunky, probably because RL's brand of 2D action does an excellent job of evoking Castlevania gameplay in a time when I'm in the mood for exactly that kind of game.

Man, that jetpack is so OP. It makes everything easier, from dragging a bunch of disparate objects to the exit, to avoiding/ambushing angry shopkeepers.

Can anyone please recommend some nice, long Spelunky video where the player gets a lot of cool stuff done?
Aside from Bananasaurus Rex's stuff, check out BaerTaffy's YouTube channel. He does the dailies and has been doing them for months and is really good. Some of them end up over an hour each.

Also, PsychedelicEyeball is one of those "holy shit how the fuck did he do that?" kinds of players. He does videos occasionally. He records himself first then does commentary over them, sometimes with guest commentators and sometimes with extra deaths at the end.
Bananasaurus Rex' solo eggplant run is a wonder to behold:

I loved this video. And a few weeks ago I was watching BaerTaffy when I got to the episode where he discovered the bug that allows the ball and chain to break the Moai. He and his Skype buddy were amazed. It took a few weeks before someone was able to use it to its advantage.
Here is the episode where he discovers it:

Funny because I feel the exact opposite. Probably put close to 100 hours into spelunky across platforms and still going strong, but I put around 5 into rouge legacy and it just didn't grab me.

I like spelunky because every run gives you a fair shot of beating the game, whereas in rogue legacy it feels like you need to grind endless lives before your stats and abilities are sufficient enough to make significant progress.

About 5 hours in. Unlocked the jungle and ice cave shortcuts. This game is really hard. Getting a shotgun to the end of the jungle was so lucky. I've read a lot of tips and hints but I'm still not that good yet. I find patience is the real key here. I've had a few bad level layouts which is really frustrating.

That seems to be the divide in these two games: players who want to feel like they can take some kind of progress with them from run to run vs players who revel in the progress that comes purely from expanding one's knowledge and skill alone. Each has its own type of grind.

I found RL hits a bad lull around the 75% mark where you've "seen" everything short of bosses. To get to that position of having 2/3 bosses down makes that happen. Those crazy fairy chests with 2 air dash-triple jump requirements? Not really the same thing.

Spelunky doesn't really do that; it's crazy new shit everywhere at the most random times. Serendipity in gaming form without feeling like a slot machine.

Had a great Daily today that culminated in a Yama kill, I feel exuberant.

Me too, today's ice level was the first slowdown I got since they patched it out. Was quite surprised, too. Not as bad as before the patch, but definitely there.

I also completed the game doing the daily today; bought a jetpack early so I skipped the black market (not enough cash for the ankh), but for some reason there were a fuckton of bombs today (at least 2-3 crates had 12 bombs each), so I had like 40+ bombs for Olmec. I could have bombed out the entire ground layer. :D

Haha! I'm VileRoboleon on psn if you'd like to add me for dailies btw :)

Luckily i shadowplayed it! I just barely got it since i dont quite understand how shadowplay works, but it got what i wanted!

Stupid big spiders made me waste the bombs i needed

Holy shit. You might want to put that up in the official forums so that the devs can take a look at it. It's a shame it's probably impossible for you to recover the seed that did that, unless Spelunky has some kind of dev log.

YES!!! Yeeeesssss!!! After repeatedly placing last or second to last among my gaf friends list the time has come today for my one daily challenge of fame. First! FIRST! Don't get me wrong, my score is nothing really to brag about but for me it was a good performance and the rest probably had a bad day ^^

Only played the demo on Vita but I liked it. Got some rick dangerous vibes sort of.

How does cross buy work? Do i need to buy it on PS3 first and then goto download in ps store on my vita?

And how do I see other users from neogaf score ? :)

Dont quote me but I think Cross Buy works either way. I've got a copy of Spelunky in my download list that I can't download to Vita; I assume that's the PS3 version.

And you can see people's high scores if you've got them added on your friends list I reckon.

I actually haven't played RL as I'm not a PC gamer but I've seen and heard a lot about it. Can't wait to play it and compare/contrast to Spelunky when it comes to Playsation. I know I'll like it.

Buy on either platform and you download and play for free on the other one. Spelunky is also cross-save and cross-play. Any progress you make either platform will be saved when you boot up the other one, as if you'd played it on that platform all along. It's smooth and brilliant. I mostly play on Vita but yesterday I played the PS3 version with a Dual Shock 4. That d-pad! Cross-play means a second player and join in a PS3 game using the Vita, so players aren't confined to the same screen real estate.

In short, cross buy rocks - especially on Spelunky.

23 hours in 2 weeks isn't even close to being "addicted" to be honest. try with 100 hours in 2 weeks.

the game, yeah, it's really good. roguelike games on steam are delivering.

I like them both a ton, two of my favorite games of last year. Spelunky is definitely the more challenging game, as I 100%'d Rogue Legacy in about 20 hours. Amazing game, but it doesn't quite have the replayability of Spelunky. The super tight controls is what makes both of them so good to me.

I'm having big troubles switching between vita and pc version. I mostly use a DS3 controller on my PC and the d-pad on it is pretty bad (compared to vita). I feel I miss a lot of basic jumps and stuff when I switch.

How do you cope with the 360 dpad btw? And any recomendations for a good retro gamepad for pc with a solid dpad?

Use the analog stick.

Quick question guys and sorry if it's been asked before

Are the leaderboards in this game shared between PC and Vita version? Like this daily challenge and such. I'm still unsure where to get the game, and if the LB are not shared I'm guessing the PC version is more active in this department.

I just started playing this game recently and I cannot for the life of me, get through the damn mines. I feel like I need to slow down but if I do, that damn ghost starts coming. It's fun for sure, but I think it's beyond my patience and skill level. :/

What shit luck, had a good run, I get hit by the yeti king which popped me up on top of the altar, then got hit by a falling platform or icicle and died on the altar.

I'm pretty sure the leaderboards are separate between the versions.

I use the stick on my 360 pad, but that's because the d-pad is ass.
Me too. I bought a wired 360 controller since I have a laptop and OS X and didn't feel like having to fuck around with the wireless adapter drivers. Plus the wire is long enough I haven't even unraveled it completely yet.

I wish this was on the Wii U as the D-Pad on Nintendo's controllers is top notch. Especially the GamePad which would be amazing for playing on the couch upstairs. Or the 3DS which would give me another reason to get one. (Use the bottom screen for all the items and status you collect and keep the top free and clean for just the game.)

So, geared up for some Cross Play with my brother on Friday, does having an extra screen to play with make multiplayer a lot better? Played the 4p demo with housemates and... it was carnage.

I use the 360 analog stick as well. Like yeah it's dumb that I have to do that, but it's better than the d-pad and there are too many buttons for me to use an arcade stick.

As crappy as the 360 dpad is, I still use it over the analog stick as my default PC control. I just can't do analog for 2D games. Maybe I should try using my DS4. It's certainly not getting much use on my PS4 at the moment.

Was well under way to hell for the very first time in todays daily. Then I stupidly managed to die from the long fall jumping down on Olmec after I've got him right on the sweet spot under the door.

Unreal

You think that's bad?
I use the analog stick on Vita.

The Vita has one of the best dpad ever made, why would you do that to yourself?? :)

I would love a Wii U version too, the dpads on both the pro controller and gamepad are great, and it would be a perfect off-tv game.

Considering how the vita struggles with the game I'm not sure how great a 3DS version would work tbh though

I lost my Ankh before finding the Moai Head; mammoth froze me to death. A top 5 (within reach) escapes me yet again...

What blasphemy is this??!
I play all my 2D games with the analog stick, regardless of controller. Now what?!

And you're obviously good at it too. I just can't do it myself, can't get the precision I need and I can't understand that guys like you can

Whoa, I was gonna pick this up just now. What does it struggle with? Framerate?

Slowdowns / frame drops, but mind you: it happens very seldom, I've had one issue in 6-700 runs where a whole level just ran in slow-mo because there was so much stuff going on (ice caves)
