I am really frustrated/disappointed by Kinect 2.0

The point is that it is a bad UI. The fact that people have gotten better at it months later doesn't change that.

Heh, you say "the point" as if everyone shares the same opinion. Again, it's just tiles. I mean, the ease of use is practically the same as the iOS menu with a controller (and/or voice controls).

And speaking of iOS, many people didn't like iOS at first either (2007) since it was new; many previews back then stating why the iPhone would flop due to it. But after a few weeks many people got used to it. Same was/is true for many with the XB1 dashboard (and many got used to it after a few weeks... not months).

If you recall this whole discussion got started because I responded to a comment saying that it took a week or more to learn the UI, which I pointed out indicates that it is a bad design.

I wouldn't say that indicates bad design. It took many people that long to get used to many of the current popular interfaces/OS. It's different/new from what people were used to before so of course it will take time for people to get familiar with it. The way apps/menus interact with each other is different on the XB1 in comparison to the Xbox 360 so yeah, it took time for people to get familiar with that. I mean, that should be pretty obvious.

Now I know that the XB1 has had some UI improvements, but I don't think that they covered all the issues. If I'm wrong about this then let me know. However if you want a more recent complaints thread about the XB1's UI take a look here: Xbox One's UI needs an overhaul It's from March 15, 2014.

There's many in that thread saying that it's solid but could use improvements. I mean, all user interfaces/operating systems can improve in some way. I honestly don't understand where you are coming from.

They could integrate a mic either in the console or on the controller itself. Wouldn't cost that much to do it. The camera part is the biggest waste.

That's my life of thought as well, it would probably drop the cost significantly as well, either way, I'm glad they implemented voice commands, and I am glad it's always listening.

Is the PS4's always on as well?

No. The PS4's voice integration is EXTREMELY half-hearted. You can start up an app/game, go the home screen, turn the console off, take a screenshot, and that's about it.

Let's not overlook accents here...it seems the Kinect has trouble with certain accents.

I was at my buddy's house a few months back and he was trying to show me the voice functions on the Kinect 2.

"Xbox on!" He said, in his Australian accent.

Nothing.

"Xbox on!" I said, in my North American accent.

Xbox came on.

May account for a lot the variance people are having. I have no real experience using Kinect 2 other than this ken personal anecdote, just my two cents.

It's a piece of shit. I tried running my cable through it for the first month or so. It black screened and misbehaved at inopportune moments. My wife was frustrated to no end trying to use the cable through the Xbone, so I stopped using it for that purpose.

Speaking of cable and TV... Trying to wedge the camera somewhere in an existing home theater was a nightmare. There's little to no room for the thing in an existing, polished set up.

Every time I try and use the voice commands, it feels like I am scolding a rotten child. The shit never works for me. Adding insult to injury, as I'm gaming and talking with friend/family the "Xbone Listening" icon pops up all the damn time, thinking I am trying to command it to do something. I had to turn the Kinect mic off.

Also! Nobody seems to realize that their Kinect mic is on my default. It's the most frustrating shit ever. Games are full of crying babies, rap music, and family chatter.

So without using the cable box feature and mic, all my Kinect does is auto sign me in when it sees my face, a feature that was done last gen by having me as the primary user and signing me in automatically on start up. Just like last gen, there isn't a single game that has used the Kinect in a meaningful way unless it is a Kinect based game, which are all gimmicky, short, and lame as fuck.

Kinect 2.0 is a completely failed technology IMO. No one should really be surprised when prior to launch all MS could do was show off everything it was capable of doing without showing it actually doing a goddamn thing.

Yeah, but if I have any accent, it's a very standard North American accent. I just tried recalibrating it again and voice commands are working about 15-20% of the time.

"Xbox On" is about the only command that works almost every time.

Forget the accent stuff, Who the hell thought it was cool speaking to a TV at nighttime when people like family or a GF is in bed, That was my issue. Saying Xbox multiple times when it didnt work just become embarrassing. Glad they got rid of it and will pick one up again next year when Halo drops.

The motion controls are pretty poor at times, but it understands my voice commands 99% of the time - and I have a weird Eastern European accent going in English

So i have no problems with it

Well, there's your problem, you tried running your cable through Kinect. Not even sure how you managed that.
I actually like the TV integration a lot. It's really well done. However, no passthrough when the console is off is a deal breaker - I don't want to turn it on every single time I want to watch TV.
