I blame Canada! . . . I'm addicted to Poutine and can't find cheese curds.

Damn C'nucks. I got addicted to Poutine. But all I can access is this:

Safeway & Trader Joe's don't seem to carry cheese curds.

Where can I find cheese curds so I can make my own. I did find some for $7 at a Farmer's market but at that price, the Trader Joe's pack at $3.99 is a better deal.

Anyone have advice on how can I make my own Poutine?
 
Don't know if you have them in your area, but Wegman's sells them. I think that's where my friend got them when she made poutine for us once.

Yeah thats news to me as well. One of the reasons I have never even had Poutine is cheese curds seem so out of the ordinary.

In Minnesota, I remember buying lots of them from those Cheeseheads in Wisconsin.

But I need to find a place in Northern California to buy cheese curds.
 
They sell cheese curds pretty much anywhere you can spend money here in Wisconsin. Grocery, gas stations, farmers markets, dedicated cheese stores, stands on the side of the road, gift shops, food trucks. Curds everywhere.
 
damnit op. I have the munchies and was about to just have a glass of water and call it a night.

instead I ordered a poutine.

Well I just got back from going to Trader Joe's to buy another bag. It comes with fries, curds, and beef sauce. It is delicious. I deep fry the fries and I broil it for a couple minutes after putting the curds & beef sauce on it. Mmmmm.

But I'd like to expand beyond TJ's I've tried my own with string cheese but not as good.

It's really dependent on the local dairies. Some make curds, some don't.
Almost every Quebec one does so they are so easy to find in Canada.

Needs just a touch of cigarette ash and motor oil for that authentic chip wagon taste

Yeah they are easy to find here no doubt, right by the cash at the Walmarts here.
 
Just make it. Cheese curds aren't necessary. Just grate up or dice up whatever your favorite cheese is and put it on some fries, make whatever your fave gravy is, homemade or can, and just dump it all together.

Yeah, my attempts with pieces of string cheese are OK. But it is just not the same as squeaky cheese curds.

Honestly although it iis not super authentic and poutine elitist snobs may shake their head at the thought of using anything but cheese curds, it really is not bad with your favorite grated cheese. I've used mozzarella or even cheddar before and it is still delicious.
 
Mozzarella works pretty good. Cheese curds is definitely not the only way to go, and definitely not the best either, if you ask me.

Cheddar Mozzarella mix is good too. Any cheese would be fine. Just don't ever do it with gouda cheese, cause that's disgusting.

God damnit. Now I want poutine. New York Fries has an awesome poutine.

It seems every place is offering it now, even pizza pizza.
 
Ask the cheese counter at your local supermarket, Co-op or Whole Foods-type place if they have any. Just give 'em a call. It'll be well worth it and much better than the frozen equivalent. Don't forget to cut up some high-quality hot dogs, those are delicious in poutine.
 
We sell them at depaneurs (convenient stores) all over the place in Quebec

Maybe we can work out a cheese curd for Hulu plus cards exchange :P

Yeah, I'm gonna ask. I've looked at several places but I've only asked a couple of times.

But that Trader Joe's bagged Poutine is actually pretty damn good.


And thanks for the hot dog idea . . . I can see that working.
 
Got to chime in on loving poutine and missing it. I get the feeling it's nonexistant in the UK though (not looked yet, not that long ago since I was on holiday in BC.)

I had it every chance I got, put on a right Buddha Belly. Also, I *really* liked McDonald's poutine. I'm sure a Canadian will tell me if that's offensive or not...

McDonald's poutine is not the worst, their cheese curds are pretty bad I think though.
 
Worst case scenario if you can't find Cheese Curds, Get some mozzarella, cut it into tiny cubes then soak them in warm milk for 10-20 minutes to soften them up. its not the optimal solution, but it works if you want Poutine and you can't find curds.

I've never seen it anywhere near Portland (or in NH), where did you find it? I'd like to get a proper version. I do make my own occasionally, when I feel like being a fat shit for a day. I use homemade beef tallow gravy and mozzarella with my double-fried frites.
 
i live like a 5km drive from one of the world's leading factories producing cheese curds for poutine. i think i'll have a poutine for lunch, actually. yum yum.
