I bought a toastie maker

Bought one for uni but gave it to my mum because she enjoyed it so much.

Ham and cheese toastie when the cheese scolds the top of your mouth is the best.

I guess I've worked out what I'm having for dinner tonight. My toatie maker unfortunately only does one at a time, but it is however dressed up like a cow. This is a good thing.

I had one like that but with a dog face!

Recipes:

chipotle mayo, chorizo, sundried tomato and scamorza
chopped up hamburger patty, (proper) cheddar
sliced chicken breast, bbq sauce, mozzarella

This thread is making me consider getting a toastie maker (it's called a sandwich maker here though). Any suggestions on US brands? I found out that Breville made them here, but not anymore.

Belgians call it a croque-monsieur, I always thought that sounded magnificently dignified for such a modest snack.

*Goes off grilling a few*

There was a segment on America's Test Kitchen where they thought people had too many specialized devices in their kitchen.

Like... if you have a stove and pan, not sure why this toastie machine is necessary. I guess if you make them like everyday, but even still, it's easy as hell to make a grilled cheese on the stove.
No such thing!

I have a bread machine, a juicer, a countertop griddle, a Magic Bullet-type blender, a tiny countertop grill and another grill thing that has the perfect shape for making empanadillas.

Bacon and baked beans is the bomb. Adding cheese is a fools game so stick with those.

Here's my list so far:

Ham and cheese
Pepperoni, mozzarella, tomato puree
Chicken, bacon and cheese
Cheese and baked beans
Baked beans, scrambled egg and bacon
Bacon, sausage and mozzarella
Cheese and chorizo sausage
Cheese and smoked sausage
Bacon and beans
Chicken, pepperoni, tomato puree and mozzarella

You need need need left over spag boll with cheese on that list

My thoughts in bolded on your list.

Here's my list so far:

Ham and cheese - The classic, 10/10. Use a nice thick crumbed piece of ham and butter the outside of the bread. Delicious.
Pepperoni, mozzarella, tomato puree Yep, pizza perfection 10/10
Chicken, bacon and cheese Basically 'the second classic' 10/10
Cheese and baked beans Please be trollpost 0/10
Baked beans, scrambled egg and bacon More baked beans madness, beans are for dinner not lunch or breakfast 0/10
Bacon, sausage and mozzarella Yeah, this works, but the bacon is overkill here 7/10
Cheese and chorizo sausage If you're looking to switch up the ham this is a flawless victory 10/10
Cheese and smoked sausage Can't go wrong 10/10
Bacon and beans God dammit with the beans again 0/10
Chicken, pepperoni, tomato puree and mozzarella No need to add chicken to pizza perfection 4/10
Spag bol with chese Hurrk... HURRRRGGGHHHHH -999999999999/10

Seriously, though. Avoid the beans.

We had a toastie maker when I was a kid, I also had one when I went to university. Apart from the classic ham and cheese, I also liked egg, bacon and beans. You can get away with cooking the egg in the sandwich but it can get messy, best to fry it separately.

The toastie maker was once basically a requirement for British kitchens, much like the electric kettle. It's a shame their popularity has faded.

WARNING: if you're brave enough to put beans (or the GOAT, spaghetti hoops and mini hotdogs) in one of these, cut a corner off once it's done and let the heat escape for a few minutes. The sauce inside becomes hotter than Satan's nut sack so eating it straight out of the toastie maker will leave you with no roof on your mouth for a week!

Appreciate the advice!

I use a meat thermometer to let me know when it's safe to eat.

We still have a Spongebob toastiemaker somewhere. It's square, yellow and leaves an imprint of spongebob on your toasties.

The kids love it.

Ya'll need to trust me on this one because it's gonna sound whack, but Creamed Corn + Pepper + Grated cheese is actually the GOAT combination.

It will be hotter than hell when it comes out but damn if the creamed corn + melted cheese doesn't create the most delicious harmony you'll ever taste.

We also call them Jaffles here in Straya.

I tried making a toastie without the machine today. I placed some cheese in the center of a slice of bread and put another on top. I used a coffee cup to seal it, and then cooked it on the stove with some butter. I pressed a little too hard and made some cracks in the bread, but it turned out fine. The cheese melted without leaking through, and the bread was toasted. I didn't bother to bite directly into it out of fear of burning my mouth. The only problem with this method is that you're using a circle cut on a square piece of bread, so the crusts and a little bit beyond that were taken out of the toastie. For someone who doesn't eat crusts, this would probably be fine, but I prefer to eat all of the bread.

I tried to make another one with chopped hot dog and baked beans as filling, only this time I pinched the bread with my fingers rather than using the cup. The results weren't as great as before, because I couldn't create the same tight seal with my fingers. The bread opened a little while cooking, but the contents stayed inside long enough to finish cooking it.

Now comes the question of whether I should keep making these the poor mans way, or just buy a machine.

LOL at the first page and the confusion on what a toastie is. Good stuff

Anyway OP, there's really only 1 toastie in existence that anyone needs to know about. Cheese and vegemite. Don't think I've ever made anything else

I hear Alton Brown in my head chanting 'unitasker!'

Not that I'm innocent on that count - I own two of those fantastically ridiculous egg muffin makers, though I use them at work.

This thing, however, seems to do nothing that a griddle/panini press wouldn't do other than crimp the edges slightly.

Not even close, mate. Quesadillas are struggle food in comparison.

nah

No different than molten cheese. It is incredibly tasty, though.

Like anything else you cook in one of those, you have to let it cool before shoving it in your mouth.

Honestly, molten sugar is a heck of a lot worse than molten cheese. I speak from years of experience with jam toasties (don't forget to sprinkle with a little sugar and cinnamon before eating)

Update: Finally got around to making the "pizza toastie" i.e - mozzarella (although I used four cheese) and pepperoni and OH MY FUCKING GOD HHNNNNGGGGHHHH
