I can't believe Beck is a scientologist.

i mean, there's a huge difference and everything, but other than that you're spot on.

what's really so different between believing jesus died on the cross to absolve all of humanity of its sins and then rose again after 3 days and ascended into heaven to one day return and Xenu destroying aliens and their spirits being stuck to our bodies or whatever?

Both are things you choose to believe on faith and must surrender rational thought to do so.. It's all the same really in terms of what's more absurd or unbelievable. Both are

you know, the stalking if you leave, the constant harassment, i think they killed a lady?

my church was cool with me just showing up on Easter and Christmas.

I don't think the Christian church are going to try and blackmail you into staying there though.

neither would they use fake charity organizations to try and recruit people into their religion.

the church of Scientology is pretty fucked up.

evangelicals put trump in office though

I remember feeling uncomfortable and disappointed when I discovered this, but he never pushes it in his music or even talks about it in interviews. If it makes him happy, then hey, good for him.

I agree scientology is wacky but the cognitive dissonance of people who follow other religions, such as christianity, who say scientology is a joke astounds me. there's no difference but time

Well, we know for a fact scientology was created by L. Ron Hubbard (a science fiction writer). As for christianity, the origins are a little hazier due to the passage of time and the fact that science fiction didn't really exist as a genre 2000 years ago..

One belief has been past on through generations and has an ancient history. It also revolves around fairly vague descriptions of a higher power that even non religious people relate to. Versus a story written by a sci-fi author 50 years ago whose cohorts went to prison for fraud.

Don't get me wrong I think virgin births are fairy tales but it's not the same.

I'd read Going Clear or watch the documentary by the same name if you want to find out the difference.

like I said.. they're basically not any different except for the passage of time. In 1,000 years scientology will seem just as ancient and significant for its ancientness.

please don't act like christianity is somehow more legitimate because ancient people made it up instead of recent people making it up

that's all I have to say about that

Ouch son that machete you're sharpening can cut clean through marble.

That black guy is staring right in to my soul.

I went here thinking it was Glenn Beck. Love it when GAF gives little context and expects everyone to know what or who are you talking about.
Beck has been very famous for 20+ years. He's a household name.

How do you believe Jesus was a prophet but also that Rob Hubbard was a prophet. You believe in the holy flame but also in flying spaceship convertibles and Xenu

People surprised that someone can hold various beliefs involving multiple religions should realize that religious beliefs are modular. That's why some cultures were able to merge whatever native religion they had with major western/ eastern religions.

Scientology isn't a religion though, it's a crazy cult that gets dirt on you and threatens you with it if you dare to leave.

it's odd but he's pretty blase about it. which i respect, i mean i love his music, i'm not in it for a friend. if he pulled off a bunch of kanye-ish theatrics i might be veered away from that mindset but i just assume that's just a part of his private life, just like how some people do coke on the weekends or watch adam sandler movies or whatever. not my bag but what do i care

Not to me personally; but it's one obvious reason it's accepted as more legitimate by most.

Human knowledge is largely based on trusting things other's tell you, and the fact that so many people for so many generations have passed on the stories of the major religions we have left today is part of their consideration for legitimacy for a lot of people..

I don't wanna derail the thread or anything, but if you look at organized religions from the outside (including Scientology), I don't think this would surprise you. Religion require suspension of rational thinking and lots of mental gymnastics.

Lots of people believe god started the Big Bang and then did the whole Noah's Ark bit, for example..

Oh I agree 100%, I'm just saying that for a lot of people there's a 'master' belief and a 'slave' belief. I think a person can have as many 'slave' beliefs as long as there is some kind of harmony between them. It all depends on the person as well, and how forgiving they are with different beliefs and if they're more concerned with finding similarities as opposed to differences with their beliefs

This is not true

Claims =/= organization

Judging by his recent albums, I think he's a lot more oriented toward Scientology. I don't care what he believes though, he's an absolutely brilliant musician.

Edit:
Remember when Beck made music for that Vita game? Sound Shapes? That shit was great. "The City". ~move a little. change a little. huuuurt a little.~

Also can't have a Beck thread without this great interview: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zdzY49xlvdY

That was totally nuts.

True, a lot of people don't do the mental gymnastics at all and just reject anything that doesn't fit their narrative.

The thing is religions are a group of varying philosophies and practices. Some ask you to seek knowledge, others don't. What a religion says is just as important as how someone interprets it, the culture they grew up in and so on. It's easy to be reductive about something you don't like, but if there's anything to be learned from this year, is that probably isn't the best way to deal with things when it comes to people, their beliefs and the enviornment they grow up in.
