I can't believe how bad Amazing Spider-Man 2 was

So I guess we shouldn't believe Raimi when he says Sony fucked him over?

Er, how did you get that from my post? o_O

I made a lighthearted, half-serious observation (see the ":p") about Garfield openly addressing TASM2's flaws in a similar way that Labeouf did about KOTCS. My post did not state or implicate that Sony hasn't meddled excessively in the creative process for the Spider-Man films, and nowhere did I conclude that Garfield's comments are inaccurate because Labeouf criticized KOTCS after that film's release.

Critics generally are wrong on action movies.

Solid B tier movie, just like the first. Action scenes were a bit better than the previous, Garfield and Stone really kill it throughout the movie, and the overall plot as Parker rounding into a more relate-able, likable Spider-Man.

Overall better than any previous Spider-Man movie, including ASM1 and anything Raimi did.

Felt like the movie was a tad to long and if it had been trimmed a bit, it could've worked. A little irritated about the character of Max in this movie. I thought the cheese of the Raimi movies were gone, but oh my god no. Everything with Max felt like it came from a different movie.

My bad I guess. Weird connection to make since this isn't the first time an actor has openly criticized studio decisions.

Like KOTCS, this movie would've sucked anyway. Kurtzman and Orci confirm this.

I think that's my biggest issue with this movie. I liked it more than any of the Raimi films, bar the original. I consider Spider-Man 2 to be perhaps the most overrated comic book film I've seen. But the tone for ASM2 is all over the damn place. I'd even be fine with a darker Spider-Man still making jokes directed at his enemies. But Parker talks about no matter how hard he tries, he'll always put his loved ones in danger while he's Spider-Man. And then he's swinging around and having a blast and saying it's the best thing that ever happened to him. Then we have serious moments and drama followed by everything with Max. Get your tone right, Webb.

I wasn't a fan of this movie either, but it's clear that Sony as a studio has too much input, and fucks with the filmmakers vision. If Webb is gonna make a shitty movie then let him, don't step in and make it shittier.

Same applies to Spider-Man 3. Let them do whatever.

Raimi made a lot of his own mistakes with Spidey 3. Giving Venom next to no screentime, making Sandman Uncle Ben's killer, giving Harry amnesia so we can have another forced love triangle subplot. Sony forcing Raimi to add Venom was stupid, but Raimi acting like a petulant child and basically torpedoing the whole production wasn't much smarter.

I enjoyed it for what it was, right up to the ending.

The final 15 minutes is truly one of the worst endings to a major film I think I've ever seen. Introduce a new enemy and then slo-mo freeze frame on the end, just as the fight begins. Fuck. Off.

GF and I just watched this for the first time and guess what....haters be dammed we like it!!! Not loved, but liked. Sure it has problems but it was a very fun and enjoyable popcorn flick. I thought Garfield and Stone's performances were spot on and Foxx didn't do bad ether.

The only thing that's pissing me off is the fact that they cut the anal sex scene between Gwen Stacy and Electro completely out of the film, even on the BluRay. C'mon Sony :(

Wait. They filmed an anal sex scene?

I really loved Harry's performance in this one. Hopefully he gets a leading role in The Sinister Six.

I am curious to find out if Kaz made any "recommendations" for edits to this film.

Edit:
Answered my own question:

Why people like this guy I don't even know.

It really was a bad movie. Awful plot, awful editing and really average cinematography.

But Garfield's Spider is so faithful to the comics and Emma Stone is so amazing that I can't hate it. I know it's bad but the cast and portrait of the characters is spot on.

I just wish they booted Webb but kept Garfield and whoever writes the Spidey jokes.

I loved it. Music and performance was top notch. So I couldn't disagree more with you.

you are all crazy.

ASM Saga is good enough, and better than the previous pretentious movies. Garfield is great too. Spidey on the suit is sooooo good, full of hope and cool.

I could write a tome about all of the things I found intolerable in THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 2, and I dug the first film.

OP's right, movie was butt

in a year of Guardians, Cap 2 and even X-Men: DOFP this was an embarrassment & they clearly went back to the drawing board by delaying that shitty idea for spider-movie overload

All the Green Goblin stuff really gunked up ASM 2 for me. Harry Osbourne's arc through Raimi's trilogy is one of the most well-handled character development plotlines I've seen in any movie franchise - period. Harry felt unnecessary in this movie, and the Goblin disease (or whatever) origin was f*cking cringe worthy. I'd much rather have seen another great Spider-man villain show up, like Kraven, Morbius, or Mysterio. But really, the film should have focused more time to develop its other plot lines.

Still though, ASM 2 never takes itself too seriously and was a very fun light-hearted romp overall. I'm super down for a Sinister Six and Agent Venom movie. Especially if Drew Goddard is involved. I hope Sony can get their spit together sooner than later; I want my Spidey movie-verse.

Nope, and I'm happy that the reception was so bad they're reconsidering the universe.

It was a subpar Spidey film, along with 3.

It was terrible. The worst part was when Spider-Man shot his web out, and it looked kinda like a hand, reaching out towards the screen. I think I literally laughed out loud, even though it was supposed to be a serious scene. The problem with these movies is you get the feeling there are some corporate assholes at the top somewhere saying "fuck it, this shit is for 14 year olds anyways", so you end up with a garbage story written around a bunch of set pieces for trailers and marketing. Spider-Man is basically a brand name for Sony at this point and nothing more.

I liked it. Didn't love it but I definitely liked it.

Yeah I agree with this. I think that if I hadn't watched ASM2 first and then the others (except Guardians, haven't watched that yet) I'd probably have a lower opinion of the movie than now.

It was one of those movies where the actors were clearly trying to make something happen but there is only so much you can do with a shit script and horrible pacing. It was still a fun watch though.

Also there was a distinct lack of action sequences in it. I can only think of maybe 2 scenes where fighting between spiderman and electro happened in the whole movie.

Time square
Power plant

That happens in a lot of super hero movies. The initial conflict where one can't quite win yet then the finale battle. Still not as bad as that nearly 3 hour Batman movie that has Batman in it for 30 minutes.

I'm another with the opinion that it was a fun comic book movie, but the script failed it at times. I was a teenager once, I realize emotions run wildly high at times and the most transient of relationships can seem like they're destined to define you and run your entire life. So the loss of a person can be ultra devastating. Problem is, these actors look like they're damn near 30 (dude already has age lines), and were living rather adult and sophisticated lives by the climax, so it softened the blow. They would have been better served placing more emotion into the first film and starting the second, this one, near where it ended up concluding. IMO.

I liked the first 2 Raimi fiilms.
Thought the 3rd was meh.
Liked the first ASM.

I have a soft spot for Spidey, but even I thought ASM2 was horrible.

Spot on. Most of the movie was really pretty meh, but Garfield's portrayal of Spidey was so good. It was maybe the first time that I really felt like I was seeing someone do Peter Parker justice. The interactions with kids, the humor, it was all faithful to the comics. And you're right about Emma. She was fantastic.

It's a shame that Garfield got stuck in such a poorly thought out. His portrayal deserves way better.

Man I really didn't think it was that bad. Better than ASM1 and nowhere near as bad as Man of Steel.

But yeah, Spidey deserves better. Way better.

i liked it but like i HATED the beginning with paul giamatti. it was so fucking stupid and cheesy with his wack ass fake ass accent. also spidermans dad reminds me of a teacher i had at community college so that pisses me off too.
