I can't believe how bad Amazing Spider-Man 2 was

You guys sound surprised. Indie film director hired onto a $200m blockbuster.

Just what do you guys think is happening on Jurassic World right now? And Safety Not Guaranteed wasn't nearly as successful as 500 Days of Summer.

Zimmer was announced to score the movie all the way back in comic-con 2013. Filming had only wrapped a couple of weeks before that I think. Would they have had a rough cut by then? That being said he wouldnt have had to see much to guess the movie would be bad. Also its been really obvious that Webb didnt have much creative control over the films.

They probably would have had a rough workprint by then with unfinished effects, yes. Editing would have been ongoing throughout filming.

I thought it was worst than the first movie. The first movie has an actual story and the villain was actually part of the story.

Plus, it had that brawl at the school, which was pretty fun even if it was done better in The Spectacular Spider-Man cartoon.

The second movie is a tonally-confused, story-deprived, aimless, soulless piece of garbage. Truly the worst Spider-Man movie... Way worse than Spider-Man 3 ever was.

I feel like when you get to a certain point in Hollywood like Kurtzman and Orci, you literally can never get fired for anything. It doesn't matter how shitty a job you do, you already have connections and notoriety for doing these things, so you'll always be set.

Sam Raimi was an indie director at one point...This movie was complete garbage because Sony/Columbia tried to start an Avengers-esque universe within Spider-Man but forgot that they should have focused on making ASM2 good

Well, I mean really just about everyone is an indie director until they're not; very few filmmakers start their careers making studio blockbusters. I think the point Sculli is making is that there's a big difference between steadily climbing the ranks, building more experience as a blockbuster filmmaker so that you both know how to handle that kind of production and also know how to resist producer/studio pressure, as opposed to jumping straight from indie world to $200+ million tentpoles.

Webb jumped directly from 500 Days of Summer to Spider-Man. Trevorrow jumped right from Safety to Jurassic World. Raimi, Nolan, et al. have been in the game longer, done more -- and progressively bigger -- films before jumping into their franchises.
 
I just watched it ...omg why did sony feel the need to plop this turd, they have a new agreement with Disney/Marvel now, they can take all the time they need. Damn that was bad, i don't think they had a script....

Even Gwen Stacy's death was fucking stupid. There was no proper build-up and no lessons learned, nothing to justify killing her character from a thematic or character standpoint. It's not surprising because the marketing wouldn't shut up about it. There was no reason she had to die other than "it was done in a much better comic book decades ago and we have no originality."

It was one of the most important moments in Comic Book history. Prior to that moment main characters didn't really die. They might disappear for a few issues but they always came back. The Death of Gwen Stacy was a huge deal in the world of comics, and just like with this movie fans went nuts talking about how insane and unjustified it was. I thought they did a great job with that scene, because it managed to have the same overall message (in my mind) that it did in the comics.

That message being; this is what happens when you fail, this is the consequence of your life. During the movies Spiderman almost always succeeds, he may have some close calls but he never really fails in the end. You could make a strong argument that he didn't fail in the end of ASM2, he subdued the Green Coblin and Electro, but he still technically failed in that he allowed Gwen to be in harms way by openning up to her about his abilities.

Personally I liked ASM1&2, but I realize that compared to Marvels well balanced movies they aren't for everyone, and that they have some serious flaws. I think Sony's biggest mistakes were trying to force Peter's parents back into the picture, trying to fit too many villains in, and spending entirely too much money on marketing.

Who was the Gwen Stacy death.. for though? Casual movie-goers, who would just be pissed off with ASM3? Hardcore Spidey fans, who the movie is apparently not for anyway? Just such a bizarre decision, made all the more bizarre by the fact they squeezed it into every conceivable piece of marketing they could.

Also how jarring is that Gwen death scene? You play this as a super-goofy, cheesy Spiderman film with Electro blowing out the candles on his birthday cake, and suddenly you just have Emma Stone's skull smack against the concrete? Eesh. Talk about a tonal mis-mash.

Like I said, the movie definitely has its flaws. If they had cut Electro in favor of focusing on Green Goblin, I think the outcome would have been amazing, and it probably would have been a darker ASM2 than we got which would have fixed the issues with tone. Sony tried to shove too many ideas into one movie--it feels like a movie written by Producers who keep adding "oh wait, we need to add this". The outcome isn't terrible (not Green Lantern level by any means) but it had a lot more potential.
 
I always laugh at how every preview had that shot of Spider-Man about to hit Rhino with the sewer cap, and that was literally the ending scene from the movie. So they were showing the final scene of the movie to everyone in previews. I actually thought the first film had some potential, as I liked Garfield more than Toby. Emo Toby killed him for me as Spider-Man.
 
I agree with most of critisism this movie got, but having 3 villains is really stretching it. Who was the third villain? You can't possibly mean Rhino's because he was in the movie for aboout a minute or two.

He was still a villain in the movie.
 
For all the crappiness of SM3, some of my favorite bits were of happy Harry and his interactions with Peter. Something all the movies lack to some degree are platonic relationships for Peter. ASM2 is especially annoying for having such a piss poor Peter-Harry dynamic. The major plot points I would have changed are


Establish a strong friendship between Pete and Harry
Have Max just be a disgruntled employee, not a crazy fanboy
Have Peter agree to let Harry use his blood in a controlled environment and have it actually work for a short time
Electro attacks Oscorp, Spider-man shows up, is forced to choose between saving Harry or Gwen, chooses Gwen
Speaking of Gwen, get rid of the entire Oxford subplot. The first half of the movie should have had Peter actually be happy
Harry is badly disfigured after Electro's attack, falls into a depression, ODs on Peter's spider blood serum, goes completely and utterly insane
Finale is a 3-way brawl with Harry trying to kill Max who is in custody and Peter trying to stop them
Electro is "cured" or just captured, not killed
Introduce MJ as another friend, possibly Harry's girlfriend
Completely take out everything involving Peter's parents
End with a reveal showing Norman is alive and tampered with the blood serum to use his own son as a test subject for the modified goblin serum
Roll credits


Gwen can die in this one or the sequel, what's important is establishing MJ as a source of support for Peter like she was in the comics

Sadly all I have is a shitty movie and my fanboy dreams
 
I went in with lowered expectations when I watched it yesterday morning and walked away fine with it. I enjoyed it. Sure, it wasn't a masterpiece, but it was fine and not deserving of this hate in my opinion.

I enjoyed it more than TASM2 and Spider-Man 3, plus Man of Steel and Thor: The Dark World. Hell, it was more entertaining than the first Thor movie.
 
I loved how everyone wanted to stand on the street as the villains are trying to kill the police and Spiderman......


I just put on Winter Soldier and the first 10 minutes bring out more emotion than all of ASM 2
 
Worst movie I've seen in awhile.

Quite possibly the worst feeling I've felt walking out of a theatre in my life (which admittedly isn't that long). Spider-Man deserves soooo much better.
 
I just can't shake how awful the villains were in this. Rhino almost made me walk out of the theater. Fortunately he didn't show up until the end.

Also when Spidey is fighting Electro, there's some stupid music in the background chanting nonsense. It was so distracting that it took me right out of the movie.

Some of the sequences were cool though. Mainly the opening one where Spidey is swinging through NYC and being late to his graduation.

Rhino is blasting away at the cops with machine guns and rockets and meanwhile parents are watching with their kids like 10 feet away. In New York.

This somehow made sense to a team of "professional" writers.
