I can't believe it, but the Wii has supply problems again in the US

A good time for them to introduce the black Wii.

I sold my launch Wii a couple years ago to a soccer mom on Craigslist when they were still hot for $450 bucks but I'm waiting for a Black unit to be released before I jump back in.

Someone kick that hack Iwata out of his office and giant gold tower. He doesn't have a damn clue what he's doing, and it shows. Analysts predicting the end of such a long-standing company as Nintendo.

For shame, Iwata. For shame.

Didn't even bother reading all of it, but I caught this in the conslusion:

I like this part also:

Only time will tell — and only sales will show whether the Wii's current generation of fans is onboard with more of what Nintendo's offerin'.

I don't know about their 'current' fans, but the number of fans just went up pretty significantly. For an article to use 'sales' as a means of discrediting the Wii is embarrassing.

Speaking of supply problems, I haven't seen a copy of that game in any store yet.

There was a shitload of them at Best Buy where I live. Come to think of it, there was a shitload of Just Dance, also. I think they probably just got in a new shipment. I didn't make a note to see if there were any Wiis left.

Wii is coming to the end of its lifespan.

I tried to read it, but every time a new paragraph started I had to scroll to the top of the page to re-check the date. The entire article seems to be based around the idea that Wii sales are slowing (nevermind Nov/Dec), that all previous Nintendo systems had a five year cycle, and that the technology of the machine is outdated. I can't believe that after all these years people are STILL waiting for consumers to 'wake up' and finally notice that the Wii is outdated. It never has, and maybe never will, occur to these people that maybe the mainstream just doesn't give a fuck about technology.

As for the current shortage, I imagine it's just because of massive December sales. This won't be a story if/until this is still happening in March. Either way, NSMB is clearly responsible.

And here I thought it was just me. I've been looking for the last 3 weeks for a Valentines gift. Finally found one at BB on Sunday. They were trying to force me into buying the $30 installation and optimization, claiming it's their new policy. That they have a stack that are $199 and and stack that are $199 + $30 fee. I told them that was pretty fucked up Mafia strongarm tactics. Literally. They relented and let me purchase it without the fee since it was the last one in store.
WTH?! I know they do this to computers/laptops, but I didn't know this applies to consoles as well. How do they install/optimize the Wii; what does that even entail? That's messed up, glad you got it for regular price.

Know what's horribly sad? I met somebody once who actually paid Best Buy to go to their house and hook up a PS3 to their TV. I told them next time they had a problem with consumer electronics give me a call, and I'll do it for a discount.

White controllers are hard to find too.

Yeah, when I was at GameStop last week preordering Pokémon, I saw this person working there trying to sell a chick a Black Wii Remote with motion plus. I noticed that GameStop was charging $54.99 for it...GameStop tax?

Also, I'm one of those people who believes that Nintendo created a shortage on purpose back then. But I do believe this time they have a real one...after they sold 3 Million Wii's in the US...

I've seen stacks of Wii's in stores since Christmas here.

What the fuck did I just read? O_o

The Wii sales freaking exploded this holiday. It's selling more than ever. I don't know in what world does the writer live but it sure as hell isn't the same where I'm living.

They wrote that article years ago just waiting for an opportunity to release it. After November and December 2009 sales of the system they realized that the day would probably never come so they said "fuck it" and posted the damn article anyway. Looks like they spent many minutes writing all of that crap too! Shouldn't let it go to waste.

Wii is coming to the end of its lifespan.

Every three months there is an article about how the Wii is capable of creating wonderful games and graphics that hold players' attentions and how well the console will continue to sell for years to come. It's about time a journalist had the courage and integrity to tell consumers the truth about the Wii.

Yeah they are definitely making tons of money on all those systems they are not selling.

I really wish people would take at least ONE economics class before making statements like the one you quoted. Serious or not, some people actually believe it.

i remember patcher said the wii would be selling out into 09 back in 07 and people thought that sounded ridiculous

It is because their 4.1 update bricked so many systems that people needed to buy a new one. Microsoft is not the only clever console maker.

Well, there's a little truth to it with luxury goods. Making something rare and hard to obtain can increase its value as a status symbol and hence increase the amount you can charge for it. (That is, the utility of the product, and hence the demand for it, would be a function of the supply.)

But on a mass-market consumer good like the Wii, I don't think you'd get very far with that approach.
