I Decided to Buy a Wii U Today

What kind of condition are the refurbs in? I may go this route later.

Like others have said, general consensus is like-new with a 1-year warranty. There's an unproven rumor that it may be unsold inventory sent back from retailers. If I didn't already get a Wii U (right before they announced that first price cut and WW bundle too!), I'd jump in on refurb

Buy a $200 refurb from Nintendo. It's 32GB and comes with Nintendo Land.[

Buy WiiMotes if you plan on doing local multi, otherwise you don't need anything.

It plays all Wii games. Get Xenoblade.

Get Wonderful 101.

Enjoy!

Mainly this, except I usually only buy my consoles new. My wife and I had our Wii U since it launch and loved it ever since. I'm still getting caught up on getting all my old favorite Wii titles (yes, there are a good number of Wii games out there) and there are several that I really enjoy on the Wii U that I haven't bought yet too.

Along with MK8, pick up:
  • DKC:TF : It's tough in the beginning but the more you play it, the more you will enjoy it.
  • SMB 3D World: Awesome, awesome game. 'Nuff said.
  • NintendoLand: If it doesn't come with your system, I would still buy it. My family loved it and I still go back to some of the mini-games from time to time.
  • Pikmin 3: If you even remotely enjoyed the first or second one, you will like this one as well. My wife loved it more the the second one.

Hey, Kotaku did just say that now's the time to buy.

Hope you get one of those $200 refurbished ones. They're a steal. Hopefully Nintendo makes it the official price soon.

People have the OP covered pretty well but wanted to throw out another Wii recommendation, especially if you have a co-op wife/girlfriend: Kirby's Epic Yarn. It can be found very cheaply and is a fantastic game. It will also get you up to speed for Yoshi's Wooly World next year.

Also added to my post! I really enjoyed playing it one with my girlfriend a couple of years ago.

Been constantly considering picking up a WiiU lately too. I saw a couple of the Wind Waker bundle left in stock at my local WalMart (Canada). I have a few games I'm still working on for PS3 so I might just wait a little longer yet.

For the WiiU bundles, is it the physical or digital copies of the games that you get?

I just recently got a credit card that will give me a 200 dollar statement credit but I have to spend 500 first (and pay that off). I may wait until then and just buy a Wii U that way.

Don't tell me that. It will only make me not want to buy one.

Looks like the refurb is the way to go. Amazon has various bundles with Mario, Wind Waker, etc, but they all seem overpriced.

Those are all 3rd party sellers, Amazon doesn't directly sell Nintendo hardware I don't think.

It varies, WW bundle will be a download though. Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but I think NSMBU/NSLU bundle is a disc, and the NintendoLand Bundle is a disc. Unsure about Mario Kart

Wow I got a great deal, $200 for MK 8 bundle including 3D World and Wind Waker off craigslist, I didnt know they were tough to get, also purchased Pikmin 3 from Gaffer, plan to pick up 101, Donkey Kong and probably NES Remix 2 off eshop, loving this console.

It's a disc. I saw a couple boxed copies of NSMBU/NSLU 2-in-1 at Gamestop in the used section the other day when I got Xenoblade.

They were selling it for $62.

Edit: At least I would assume so as they don't sell the NSMBU/NSLU 2-in-1 separately, right? It only comes in the bundle?

Nevermind, answered my own question! ;)

Holy shit dude you should be charged with robbery

^ And thanks I thought so

Damn, if it's a download for WW then I might just get the NSMB bundle. I've only just started getting in to buying bigger games digitally, but I'm still not quite ready to give up physical copies.

This is how it looks to me:

Must Own Games
Super Mario 3D World
Mario Kart 8
Pikmin 3
The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker HD

Must Own Games if you like 2D Platformers
Rayman Legends

Must Own Games if you like Zelda Games

Strong Games to Consider

The Games of the Future
Zelda
Super Smash Bros 4
Bayonetta 2
Xenoblade Chronicles X

If you have a Kmart around you (aka the land that time has forgotten) check there. Every store is sold out around here too, but I got one at Kmart a few weeks ago. I walked by earlier this week also and they still had all the Mario Kart bundles sitting there from a few weeks ago.

And if you want a full priced copy of Madden 08 they also have that on shelf too!

Great system, good choice.

Tip for anyone getting into The Wonderful 101: for your first time through, play on Easy or Very Easy and unequip the auto-combo custom block. The game is extremely punishing on Normal. It's a lot like the original Devil May Cry and the original edition of DMC3 in that Normal is really the equivalent of Hard or Very Hard in other games.

Could someone explain to me why The Wonderful 101 is so good? New Wii U owner here as well so I'd like to hear what's so good about it.

Go and check your Best Buy's, OP. Searched online before going and only said "not available" but actually drove there and they had it in the stock room.

Best purchase of the year for me.

I played through the first 2-3 missions on very easy a couple of times until I got the hang of everything. No shame.

It was directed by Hideki Kamiya, the father of stylish action games. Basically it's brimming with humor and personality and the story is one of the wildest rides in any game I've played. It's almost always entertaining, unless you play a difficulty above Easy too early. The combat system is deep and has unbelievable variety. You'll want to watch Saur's videos to get a handle on it, because the game doesn't explain it as well as it should.

Other than that, TW101 probably has more bonus content than any other Platinum game to date, and they're pretty well known for delivering tons of value for your money.

It's a character action game made by Platinum Games, headed by Hideki Kamiya (of Okami, Devil may Cry and yviewtiful Joe fame, also Bayonetta), it's a million amounts of crazy, is beautiful to look at, quite challenging and just all-around awesome.

It might be a bit complicated to get into the gameplay at first, that's why I (and many others) recommend looking at Hiw to Play videos on YouTube first.
once you get over the obstacle that is he steep learning curve you are presented with a purely wonderful game that will blow your mind several times.
Also don't use the touchpad. Use the right analogue stick instead. You will se what I mean when you play the game.

Good plan. I regret forcing my way through the whole game on Normal my first time, because I was too frustrated to appreciate some of the cool moments.

I've played my share of action games and TW101 is definitely its own thing. Some skills carry over, but the combat system presents a lot of unique challenges I wasn't prepared for, like keeping enough of my team out of harm's way that I can always summon a decently powerful weapon morph. I still haven't quite figured out that one. You've got to stay aware of a lot of different things at once. What your team members are doing, where your leader is, what the enemies are doing, how much battery power you have, how much power your next action will consume, etc.

IMO playing on Easy is pretty much a must so you don't get overwhelmed early on.

The Wii had a huge library, so while there's the must-haves which have already been listed, I'd take these into consideration as well if you have any interest in smaller titles, especially since many are very cheap now and you can build a library quickly.

Dewy's Adventure
Dragon Quest Swords: The Masked Queen and the Tower of Mirrors

If you never had a Wii, don't forget to look into that console's fantastic line-up, too. The Wii has my two favourite 3D platformers of all time and my favourite Action-Adventure of all time: Super Mario Galaxy, Super Mario Galaxy 2, Zelda: Skyward Sword. Get them! Also on Wii U, you should not miss Super Mario 3D World and Pikmin 3, but there are also a whole lot of other fantastic games on both, Wii and Wii U for you to enjoy. If you don't plan on buying digital, 8GB is just fine, but the NSMBU+NSLU bundle has a 32GB and those games are incredible, too. If you buy a 32 GB, you also get a sensor bar with it, which you need for Wii games (provided you want to play them on the tv), you then just need a Wii-Remote Plus and a Nunchuk to be able to play most Wii games, while also being prepared for multiplayer on Wii U.

No mention of Sin & Punishment 2 makes me sad. :(

Actually I also decided to buy a Wii U yesterday as I found a very good deal for a used one and I want to ask something now that I got a chance.

So I bought the Wind Waker bundle and WW was already installed. I see 2 accounts there, only one is linked to a NNID. What should I do in order to make sure that I won't lose the game somehow? If I format I lose it forever unless I get the password for this NNID? I guess that my best bet is to just create my own profile for now and avoid formatting at all costs or am I missing something?

OP, I can only recommend an 8gb unit
its white and ive got one
had a black 32gb before but man it gets ugly after a small amount of time (surface scratches, smears that dont seem to come off when cleaning)
I sold it (not because it started to look ugly but because dumb reasons)

now I have a white one
it never looks dirty
you dont see the dust as much
you can carry it in a bag to a friends house or move it to another place within your home without it getting visible surface scratche

Also Im from germany and here they sell only these glossy black pro controllers for wii u
I went full crazy and purchased a white pro controller from overseas for nearly double the price with shipping tax and stuff

I hope you're happy Wii U Gaf

I never would have played W101 except for all the Gaf love. I hated the demo but learned that was normal, and stuck with it long enough until it clicked. And then it feels sooo good. The game has problems but a serious investment will receive a serious reward, enjoy it!

Edit: Kamiya also directed Resident Evil 2 because he is insane. Also, I can confirm that banging your head on Normal difficulty from square one may not be the best idea, since this is what I did and had to absorb some beatings. I was glad to finish a Normal playthrough but it wasn't necessary.

That might be the best course of action. Install your own account on the system, you should get the same games. Delete the other two accounts manually after that. Or contact Nintendo. I know last year you could just redownload on a second hand system, but i'm not sure what changed with the NNID updates this year.

I own a launch 32GB version, but i don't understand the hate the 8GB version gets. Especially since you can find great deals. If you're going to be downloading lots, you'll be needing an external HDD anyway and 32GB won't cut it either. You'll be missing out on the digital promotion, but as it is ending this year, i doubt new users will be getting much out of it, especially since retail prices are way cheaper than e-shop prices even with the promotion. The main problem is that there is no charging dock included (but neither is it in the refurbished edition US gets). But you can buy it for cheap now. No console stands though, and 3rd parties only offer ugly ones.

True
OP has to consider that a charging dock is pretty handy with the gamepad. He may need a sensor bar as well or a wii mote for BC purposes/multiplayer. I suppose OP may want to play the creme de la creme of the Wii software catalogue since he missed out on that.
So there are bundles which include them and some which do not.

8GB or 32GB - do you prefer white or black console? Sure you can't store much on the 8GB but just grab a 500GB HDD and you're set.

Play Mario Galaxy for sure!
