Basically, without re-litigating the whole thing, the problem people had was after the donations were made, after I was finally free to start saving my own money [completely unrelated to any donations] again (since before I was using my savings to prop up my Mom's medical bills and such), I posted that I was going to spend on a load of drugs like 6~8 months later. They noted that it's probably inappropriate to say something after people donated and some speculated I used donated money to do it, and my argument was that if I can't spend the money I started saving for myself again the way I want, couldn't we say this about anything (say my game purchases or movie purchases).
In the end, I conceded a key point - I did have a problem. Since drugs were the way I had my recreational fun, it was difficult to understand how it looked to everyone else. So I entered myself into rehab. I finished the bulk of it, but I retain therapy and still go to NA meetings every week.
I hope that clears this up. neoGAF did a huge favor to my family, the only part of this process I ever hated was the idea that some thought they did it for nothing. They didn't. They helped my Mom out immensely and, in fact, as a positive note, she is responding so well to treatment that she is nearly in remission and they think they might be able to put her on a kidney transplant list - something that doctors thought would never be possible.
