I don't like the help/save something scenario in games.

I don't know why, but it just bothers me. I like the outcome of a game or stage to depend entirely on me, and nothing else. Having to keep a station from being destroyed or a person from being killed or kidnapped is always a situation that I'll play through as quickly as possible just to get to the next part. Anyone agree/disagree? I just feel like "Why don't you take on me and leave him/her/it alone.

I don't know. Different gameplay situations are nice. If it was always me that is taken on by ennemis in all games it would be equally boring.
Throw me some game titles that particularly itch you in that regards, i'm curious.

I've never said "I hate this game." because of it, but I can't say I've ever been more entertained or satisfied by such a scenario. Like helping Ashley in Resident Evil 4, defending zeppelins in Crimson Skies.

These situations are a mixed bag, I can mostly think of bad ones:

Having to keep hella LEVs alive in the final assault on Aumaan in ZOE2.

Having to keep your "family" alive in GoW (the game had already ruined itself for me at that point so I didn't even care).

In both situations it just becomes a hassle to keep yourself alive and a group of other people too. They just make things twice as frustrating, especially when auto-targeting becomes a problem. Like, say you want to focus on who you want to save but end up locking onto someone else, that kind of thing.

I like missons where you are sent out to destroy something or kill someone important, much better.

But of course, that is a little like saying "I like to play video games".

Ok i get it now. Escort missions. You have to use words like "escort" for me to understand :lol

Yeah well, i think it's viable and fun gameplay if well done. What i ****ing hate is when the NPC sorts of throw itself into the action like a tard and it dies. Those are ****ING BADLY designed games.
On some occasions though (quite rare they are) i think those type of gameplay was really well done. I personally like RE4 Ashley parts and also the part where you protect Eva in MGS3.

Pretty much any gameplay can be bad though if poorly executed...

I'm rather bored of the keep "so and so alive by sniping enemies" that is featured in several games. At least in single player, in multiplayer it seems like more fun. Hmmm...

I am sure this was a nice break or entertaining for some people.
But in the same regards, I felt it broke up the gameplay in a negative way(for me). I still think the game is awesome, and can see where Capcom was coming from, but I totally sympathize with you here.

I think Goldeneye's 00-agent Command Center (keep Natalia alive) while trying to get the 2x RCP-90 cheat takes the cake.

Well you could always look at it like if you don't defend said person or item then the whole thing would fall apart anyway. The outcome is still dependant entirely on you.

Ah, the dreaded escort mission

I want to say that they don't bother me...but then I realized that I haven't played a game with a mission like this in over a half a year...so in a way they bother me so much that I avoid games with them entirely

some games pull these types of scenarios off with style, though...like RE4 or ZoE2

I'm with Speevy on this - usually I hate those types of missions because it's so difficult to see what's hitting the things you're protecting. I always get stuck on those types of levels.
