I don't understand the love for The Beatles at all

I only respect the Beatles because of their lasting influence. I cannot, however listen to any of their songs for longer than a couple minutes without wanting to change the song.

Its boring, and the geniuses along the way have improved what they started. I don't get the love NEW fans have for their music. Older folks reminiscing, sure I get it.

This thread again? There are many many reasons why The Beatles have such a lasting appeal, but I'm sure most of it is already answered here.

I think music now is infinitely better than back then. How many truly quality bands came out of the 60s?

Really? REALLY?!

I didn't understand until I listened to Abbey Road all in one setting with my eyes shut. Then I saw the light.

Nice try.

My friend used to be obsessed with the Beatles, in 2010 no less!!! I for one can't stand their music; dedicating a class project on them was one painful experience.

I could generate a long list of musical acts that I don't "get" but you don't see me starting threads saying "I don't understand the love for Tool/Deftones/Skrillex/etc. at all"
I don't understand biggie/Pac but you don't see me making...oh wait.

Seriously, though it's not the music it's what they did for music you have to appreciate.

The thread title broke my heart, but the number of people in here defending them warms my heart.

I honestly can't comprehend how it's possible to dislike the Beatles. They have such a varied and fun catalogue of music that it should be easy for anyone to find st least one song or album that would be an entry point into their library.

Also-
Revolver > all other beatles albums.

Speaking of which, would any of you fans pony up for their entire discography on bluray?

Like, each album being offered losslessly in mono, stereo and a new 5.1 mix. You could have video and photos of the band play on screen that pertain to era of that particular album while the music was going, or opt for just track names ect.

Yup. Thats what I want.

Are you saying The Beatles are a vegetable?
No. Bacon Deluxe. I don't even eat Bacon but I know it's going to be good.

Fuck no. I paid $300 for Mono "LIMITED EDITION OF 10,000" set, only to find out they removed the limited restriction and the package is on sale for a mere $100 or less now.

Fool me once...

They were the Justin Beiber of their time. Justin Beiber will receive the same praise 30-40 years down the line.
Everyone has differing opinions to which they are entitled, but this statement... Perhaps to maybe some of the clearly pop-centric early albums, but to put the entirety of the beatles body of work on the level of the senseless pop-drivel that is justin beiber is just objectively wrong in every way shape and form coneivable. Get the fuck out.

I always find these subjects odd. I often don't like popular things, but I'm never dumbfounded by their popularity.

Why were the Beatles popular?

They were good looking enough to get pre-teen young girls interested.
They wrote incredibility catchy pop songs that got many "regular" people interested.
They were charming and outgoing, so the press loved them.
They starred in a legitimately charming and funny movie (A Hard Days Night)
They were just edgy enough to pull in music snobs.
They played incessantly before becoming famous, so they were incredibly tight musically.
They had a brilliant producer in George Martin who created amazingly well recorded albums.

I've given them a fair shake and they are just ok. they have some classic songs but there are so many other artists and genres of music I would rather listen to.

So you don't want to hear their music losslessly because you overpaid for the mono box set?
Overpaid. No. I paid the price it was limited to. Once mine was shipped, they said "Oh, it's not limited anymore. Price drop!"

That was within a few weeks of me purchasing... >:(

Oh god I thought I was alone in this!

Altough "Hey Jude" is a great song, most of TB songs are quite generic and not that catchy.
You can say pretty much everything you want about The Beatles.

Not catchy though? I mean, there IS empirical evidence against that affirmation.

I don't think I've ever heard a Beatles song from beginning to end.
You should probably not be proud about that. It's like saying you've never had sex, or never read anything from before 2000, or never watched a Scorsese movie in its entirety. Just keep that to yourself until you've done something about it.

I actually have a friend who only likes one Beatles song, but he is a metalhead so I guess it's not his type of music....

Yeah well just got off the phone with Yoko and we're forging ahead with the whole 5.1 idea before this whole physical media thing collapses.

Can't leave any money on the table ya know?

Eh, not a fan of EC at all. He was a serial borrower and he's gone on a few racist rants in the past that belies his "respect" for black music.

I wasn't talking about his respect for black music, which he does have, I was talking about the respect black musicians had for him and still do. In fact some of the greatest blues musicians in history have said very nice things about him.

I believe he went on one racist rant, when he was a drunk and drug addict, and got caught up in the crap Enoch Powell was spewing. There was no excuse for it, but you're talking about a time when there was high levels of immigration happening from the commonwealth countries into the UK. And of course there were inevitable problems caused by it. Eric at that moment in his life believed what Enoch was saying. In fact the reason he even started the rant in the first place was because some arab guy started grabbing his wife's arse.

You're talking about one episode in his life, and judging the man by that, yet there is overwhelming evidence he isn't racist at all.

And he plays a lot of traditional blues songs that he never wrote, which all blues musicians do.

You have to listen to a entire album, you can't get the beatles music from listening to random songs. I made that mistake too, and my opinion was that they were overrated.

Then, in 2009 I downloaded the entire discography, listening complete albums really makes a difference. Now I'm forever in love with their music.

This thread is stupid but yeah greatest musicians of all time.

I understand how someone born in the 90s might not be able to grasp the impact the Beatles had on the world. Doesn't make it right, but I understand.

Talk about a man in the right place at the right time.

If you want to make a Bieber comp, look no further than Elvis.

I disagree, but he still invented pop music long before The Beatles.

I don't like them and quite frankly find them to be rather boring and overrated, but there's no denying the influence they've had on pretty much every musical genre related to pop or rock.

I don't like them at all. I respect them though. There's no doubt that they've been a big influence on bands I do like.

As for 'best band/album of all time': I think OK Computer is the best album of the twentieth century. I might not listen to it for a while, but once I come back around to it, just blows my mind all over again.

The OP's main misconception appears to stem from not listening to them in context. Of course it sounds a little generic nowadays, to someone hearing it for the first time, but this is a result of their influence.

You've got to bear in mind, at the time, no-one sounded like The Beatles. They were totally unique. The fact that they wrote incredible music merely amplified their appeal.

I tend to agree that most of The Beatles music is generic pop stuff, but listen to The White Album and tell me that isn't one of the best double albums of music ever. Following that, I tend to enjoy Revolver, Sgt. Pepper and Yellow Submarine.

I don't understand it either. They were good if you live in the 60's. Their music really sounds dated and has been surpassed multiple times. Ringo Starr was also a terrible drummer.

Ringo wasn't even the best drummer in the Beatles :lol

But yeah, I guess their stuff does sound very dated nowadays since music has had 50 years to evolve from the foundation Beatles created, you'd really have to compare them to their contemporaries to make it a fair comparison.

Do you think it's like a rota system? Every artist (I struggled with using this word) gets 30-40 years? You need to earn that time man, it's not a universal entitlement.

Beibs has another 5 years, tops.

And he ain't influencing shit.
