I feel really intimidated by TitanFall 2's multiplayer

I'm no stranger to multiplayer shooters on PC, I've been a gamer most of my life, and am totally able to whoop ass in multiplayer games. Most recently I've been playing Overwatch and Battlefield 1 to get my online shooter fix, and I tend to do very well in these games...

Titanfall 2 though.... that shit just looks way to insane for me. I've purchased the game during release, and absolutely intend to play through the singleplayer campaign and then delve into the multiplayer... soon enough

I constantly see these insane videos of people performing amazing gaming feats, wall running, jumping, swinging, sliding all while killing people. It looks totally fucking awesome, and I want to do it too... but I don't know if I can. I feel like whatever is left of the TF2 multiplayer community on PC is just straight up hardcore players who will just end up owning me over and over... and over again....

So I've been putting it off, because... I'm scawed.

The controls are intuitive and responsive enough that pulling off crazy shit probably isn't as difficult as it may look. With a little practice you'll be wall running and sliding all over the place, no problem.

No reason to be sca---

it's not hardcore players, i jump in here and there, and i deffo can't do all the zipline swing 360 no scope titan blast kills. Give me a shout and we'll play together!

Play the single player first to get to grips with the controls and mechanics, throw on bumper jumper if you're on controller and you'll good to go.

It's like any other new game, it'll take time to learn the weapons, titans, maps and abilites, but it's worth it when you do.

Don't be scared. If you're a decent FPS player in gerneral you'll do just fine.

Evolved is the best control scheme.

Switching the control scheme to bumper jumper makes a world of difference. Really, it's a lot easier than it looks. Just takes some practice and learning the maps, much like any other FPS. I actually do better in Titanfall than I do in most other FPS games.

Fuck seriously already? I bought this back in Novemeber and haven't had a chance to jump on yet...

You can still get into games of Attrition almost instantly. The other modes are pretty dead though and have been for a while.

I was exactly like you OP. I never gave TitanFall much of a chance for various reasons, but I had just beat the games I purchased and nothing new was out for a few more weeks and wanted something new to play.

First I heard that Respawn was gonna have free DLC and I wanted to purchase the game ONLY to support the dev for this stance (because I didn't think I would like it)

Then I heard the campaign was this amazing thing you had to experience (honestly it was above average but nothing mind blowing)

So with the 2 above things combined and me being bored I decided to buy TitanFall 2 and only expected to play the multi player for a couple of games before it collects dust in my collection.

BOY WAS I WRONG!!!

The fast paced action and wall running/jumping I thought would turn me off the game, but the gameplay is sooooooooo good and smooth I was able to immediately understand what to do and figure things out and it is one of the most fun games I played recently. It is also one of the longest times I have played an online game daily in a long while.

The controls are easy enough to pull off some stuff even if you aren't very good. I'm not the best and I have a blast with it.

High skill players can do crazy shit that's for sure.

I have many games where I feel like I'm crushing the other players, seeing them driven before me and hearing the lamentations of their women, only to find out I'm dead last on the leaderboard. But that's OK, because in all the mayhem and madness, there were cool moments and those are the things that stand out.

See, Titanfall's greatest trick is that even if you're doing badly, you feel like you're doing well.

It took a few hours for me to get that stage, since the game can feel terribly unforgiving in the beginning. But if if you persist, it will be worth it.

Even if the scoreboard says otherwise.

So I've been putting it off, because... I'm scawed.

I'm not used to FPS multiplayer online or off and I'm torn by it to be honest. I just started the campaign and want to finish that before I think about multiplayer, but I also want to try it before the PS4 players disappear. =/

It really isn't as hard as it looks, pretty easy to rack up a good K/D ratio on. Play the campaign first to learn the movement then you'll be ready to play online.

and I'm East... well I guess I can;t be scared when there's no-one to play with :(

You'll still be able to get a match of Attrition vs. the same people over and over again. You're also of course going to get absolutely wrecked by experienced players until you learn the maps and weapons.

I cant stand it, that's coming from a GEN1O Pilot who was addicted to the first game, for my tastes they removed all the magic of the first game.

Just dive in. I had no experience with online multiplayer/shooters besides Rocket League and Overwatch, and I have been loving Titanfall 2

There's definitely a learning curve, but it's not impossible. If I can handle it, you can too

I play with a 360 controller on PC and still get top 3 almost every game. It's not a super hardcore game.

I would recommend focusing on movement. Once you can keep your momentum up and your paths smooth but unpredictable, you will be very difficult to kill.

Also Tone is really really good for killing pilots.

hey man I felt the same way.

I kept the default gun and titan and ability (R-201, Ion, and grapple) just to get used to things. Funny enough after trying everything it's still my favourite combination of tools and abilities.

Just jump in, I almost play Attrition exclusively, it's about points so you wanna get all the AI and the Titans and Pilots. Just try it man!

I haven't played the campaign but I imagine it does a good job of introducing elements.

I'm intimidated by any game's multiplayer these days. I'm fine with dying/losing but I hate feeling like I'm letting a team down.

The movement in this game is perfection. It's so fluid, so intuitive, so seemless that once you get the hang of it, it's second nature to pull off.

Start up a private match and practise. Try stay off the ground for 30 seconds. Then 45. Wall run, jump turn 180, and wall run back. Practise with the grapple. Fire it at the corner of a building and swing round. Land in a slide.

Get good at the movement and you'll have an advantage over 90% of players (once they nerf AR's and the FUCKING DEVOTION)

I find Titanfall 2 MP far easier and more enjoyable than its contemporaries(COD:IW, BF1).
The free running stuff is actually really forgiving. Just try what you want to do and it'll probably work. All the movement options are really fluid and magnetic. It all just chains together with a little practice. Maybe finish the campaign first? Its really well done.

I'm not a hardcore shooter player. I loved Unreal Tournament back in the day, and would play Quake multiplayer now and then, but after that, didn't get too deep into most competitive FPS games that came out after that. I did really love Resistance 2 / 3 in terms of multiplayer, but I would look at things like Call of Duty and was in your place—finding them intimidating and almost a bit scary. I finally broke down and tried Call of Duty Ghosts and Battlefield 4 at the same time; Ghosts I was okay at but never great, B4 I quit pretty quick just because it was too intense and hardcore for me. Since then, I haven't played much of either series, except for trying to get into both Infinite Warfare and Advanced Warfare, and quitting both pretty quick. The most I've played any FPS online in any amount of years is Overwatch, but that's in part because it's a very different thing and far more "casual" in certain ways.

SO, all of that said—I play the hell out of Titanfall 2 and love ever second of it. It does have complexity to it, and I don't know that I'd call it "casual", but I find it to be much easier just to experiment and have fun in the game than many of its rivals. I went straight into the multiplayer without touching the campaign, and survived just fine. It definitely is a first-person shooter, but it also feels more akin to an action game or something else at times, especially in the movement system and some of the loadouts you have.

And, one of the biggest things for me, is that it's kind of Call of Duty without having the Call of Duty community (at least, in my opinion, and on the PS4). What I mean is, I don't feel afraid to just play and maybe get something wrong. Since the player base is smaller, people seem more chill, so it's less intimidating to just jump in and give it a go.

Seriously, do that. I thought the original Titanfall was a neat idea and I did have fun trying it out online, but I never could have imagined that I'd end up loving its sequel as much as I do. Don't be intimidated or afraid—just try it. Take it in steps. First, start playing it just like a standard FPS, with your feel always on the ground and the whole Titan aspect not a huge deal. Then play around more with the Titans. Then the movement system. As with any game with loadouts, the amount of choices can be super intimidating, but using nothing but the initial set of options is 100% viable. (Hell, I still main the grappling hook, and that's the first thing you have.) Then, when you're ready, try a different gun. Pick totally at random if you want. Then, another. And another. Take it slow if you need to. The game will wait until you're ready to make the next jump. :)

These things happening are not that frequent. Don't worry about it so much, it won't take long to get the hang of it either.

Titanfall 2 probably has the lowest skill base of any multiplayer shooter I played this year. I'm going to sound like a complete dick but I got bored of winning and went back to Siege to get my ass kicked.

Edit: I should add this isn't the game's fault, TF2 and Siege are the best shooters of the gen by far.

How is around 2k players no one? This idea that a low player count equals no one to play with is getting absurd now. If there was no one it'd be on zero.

Honestly? Just know what you're supposed to do is enough to be super good at this game.

Similar in the first game too. You do not have to be good at Pilot combat etc. Just realise what's expected of you in certain modes and you'll constantly place high. It has one of the worst player bases considering how oblivious they are.

When you start the game you'll play through an obstacle course and your top split suggests a difficulty when playing the single player. Keep replaying that obstacle course until you get the achievement for it. After an hour or two, you're going to see how everything flows together and which mechanics and interactions to value over others while platforming or in combat. It's an amazing game--don't get put off, just
get good

You're not wrong.

If it makes you feel any better, I can't play CoD or even Battlefield that well but I can slaughter people at Titanfall. It's just a matter of getting the speed down

I actually felt the same before trying it, but MAN does it pull you in and make you feel all comfy.

It's awesomely friendly and rewarding at the same time. I didn't ever feel super overwhelmed and you learn quickly.

I felt the same way at first, but then it finally clicked and became one of the greatest shooters I have ever played. You just have to get used to the speed, maps and mechanics and you will be fine.

Watching high level play of any game can intimidate someone who has never played before.

Titanfall 2 is really easy to get into, you just have to train yourself to make the best use of your movement options rather than just running everywhere like you would in other shooters.

Actually, I have a theory people really like this game because given a decent amount of time you'll be better at it than any other shooter due to how garbage the players are.

The campaign does a fantastic job of training you on the mechanics and some areas are perfect for just running around and practicing. Multiplayer is ridiculously satisfying, well worth enduring some growing pains.

I scare the ever loving shit out of my dog sometimes by screaming with excitement after pulling off especially crazy moves or sequences.

Best shooter on the planet.

I pretty much feel the same. I still really enjoy some Titanfall 2 from time to time but it just doesn't have anything that gives you the competitive feels.

I wouldn't feel intimidated at all playing Titanfall 2 as a new player. It's fun. It's filled with people who aren't much beyond pure noob level. It's not super stale like COD. I've personally always found Battlefield to be a far more punishing game than Titanfall for noobs.

I've been in the top three players in over 2/3rds of my matches at this point, so... you might not be wrong. XD That might be why I've found it less intimidating than other games.

I've been in the same boat as the OP. I played through the SP before I had Plus and now that I have plus I want to jump into the MP but figured I'd just have no fun getting blasted. Glad to see the recommendations.

I thought that about Rocket League for the same reason (watching videos of people doing crazy shit) but that turned out OK. I was like "I'll never be able to do that" but when I finally got on it I found that most of the players online can't do that stuff either.

It's rare for me to play online multiplayer but I've been playing Titanfall consistently for months. Don't be scared!

Yeah its especially bad with Titanfall because of Attrition, but every game with randoms and objectives sort of feels like that? If its in Destiny/Overwatch/BF1, half the team seems to be under the impression they are playing team deathmatch, with varying degrees of success. I usually just avoid objective based games if im not with a premade team.
Play the objective people :(

I'm constantly in the top three when I play Attrition, and I don't wallrun or use the grappling hook at all. A great thing about Titanfall 2 (in Attrition anyway) is there are levels to involvement. If all you do is hunt Grunts to increase your team score, and defend your own Grunts, you're doing as much, if not more, than people who actively hunt Pilots. The game isn't as complex or agility-focused as you might think, though it certainly can be played that way. Finding a groove that works for you is everything.
