• Hey Guest. Check out your NeoGAF Wrapped 2025 results here!

I finally played STAR CONTROL II. You should, too.

I played the 3D0 version way back when but I never had a chance to really get into it. Like mr. OP my recent discovery of ur-quan masters was jubilant. I'm planning on devoting a lot of time to it over the coming reading break.
Another interesting tidbit is that UQM supports the 3D0 fmv intro/ending, but doesn't provide them citing copyright issues or something. They are floating around torrent sites and can probably be found fairly easily though. They weren't very hard for me to get a hold of a few weeks ago.

Wow, I didn't know those existed.

Someone put them up on youtube:

I hope one day everyone in the world will make the same wonderful discovery the OP has.
I fully agree, and that's an awesome username/avatar.

That's really cool. And I didn't know Crystal Dynamics did the 3DO version.

Does anyone know where the PC version of the game stores save files? I can't find them at all.
I wish I could help with this, but yeah they're not in the directory they should be in for some reason :S

As for the combat: I didn't mind the camera adjusting its height to your speed, I could always see far enough ahead unless I was standing totally still. Going out of the screen and appearing on the other side with the enemy'suddenly on the other side of the screen as well was confusing at first, but I learned to use it as a tactic to outrun them, cause them to turn away and then hit 'em from behind. What really annoyed me tho, were those damn planets. If you accidentally fly into one (which happened a lot!) it does a lot of damage to your ship, and the weaker ones are pretty much instakilled. I like to use my flagship in combat and when you hit a planet with it, you lose a lot of crew. Slower ships like those small human ones that fire missiles can get sucked into a planet's orbit and when that happens you bounce off of it like a bumper kart until you're kaputt. Those planets gave me a lot of crap.

Oh yeah, the save files are hidden somewhere in the Users directory. Maybe in the Applications folder? I don't have the PC I used to play the game with me to check unfortunately.

The odd thing is I got into Star Control 2 because a friend had a 3DO and we had a blast playing Super Melee, but I can't find a 3DO with two controller ports.
That's because 3DOs never had 2 ports. You're supposed to daisy chain the controllers.

I rented the Genesis port way back when. I have never come close to being so mystified by a console game. The manual alone was intimidating.

I played it again recently and discovered it's really not all that complicated. I still can't get into it for some reason. It seems like the kind of thing I would love.

That is indeed quite awesome.

The PSP version has now stolen my life.

Also, if you're like me and don't like your game's files in a 1,000 different folders all over your harddrives, I posted how to fix that earlier, #16 for the command to make the game keep your save files in it's local directory.

Thanks, works like a charm.

I'm replying to remind myself to try this out tonight. Thx for the info.

I really don't like SC2. Especially the voicework is annoying. And the ships are too slow / hard to handle. And the game feels pointless. And the things you do are repetitive.

Definitely not one of the best video games ever made, I wonder how people come to that conclusion.

Some of us didn't have soundcards back then and weren't aware that it may have supported a built in PC speaker. :P

I hope I'm not remembering wrong, but...

I was one of these people, at least until I finally got a Gravis Ultrasound for Christmas (yes!) In the meantime, though, I was really into MOD music, and I built for myself a little device that worked with some trackers and players; it was basically a male printer port plug with a bunch of resistors chained into an RCA jack off the output lines, and I got 8-bit mono synthesized music out of it which was much better than the PC speaker.

As I recall, that device also worked with Star Control 2. Pretty crazy stuff.

It might have been similar to this, actually.

You clearly didn't click with the game, at all. The game feels far from pointless, you seemingly didn't play long enough to even realize the ships are slow / hard to handle at first, until you upgrade them? That's like less than an hour or two in to the game...

I never really thought poorly of the voice acting either, game is great, you just didn't get it.

I don't know why I didn't mention the music in the OP; it is indeed very impressive. I don't think I'll forget about the hyperspace theme for quite some time :)

I have a question for those more familiar with the game than me: Is it possible to get the Pkunk killed? They try to move to the Yehat every now and again, and there are two dialogue options that you can use to convince them to go back, but they can only be used once. I knew I had to fix the whole Shofixti problem before the Pkunk got there because the Yehat would kill them otherwise. I did that but hadn't gone back to base yet, so when the Pkunk started migrating the third time I wasn't sure what to do. Went to the Yehat first, then tried to talk to the Pkunk but there was nothing that kept them from moving. I finally go back to base, the guy tells me I can build Shofixti ships so I haul ass back to the Yehat, show them a ship and
they start a civil war just before the Pkunks got there.
But after a while the Pkunks disappeared from the map so I thought they'd been killed and I'd fucked up.
So I was all the more pleased when, during the endgame, the Shofixti show up and tell you "the Pkunk have successfully integrated into our culture!" and they give you some Pkunk ships that for the first time in the game are actually useful :)

So, long story short: Do the Pkunk get killed when they get to the Yehat before you fix the Shofixti problem?
Well, I played this game a long, long time ago, and I played all 3, and I have a very, very hazy memory of each individual game, so whatever I post, I could be wrong.
IIRC, I saved the Pkunk. They have this very, very nice ship, which I used to kill lots and lots of Ur-quan ships. IIRC, Pkunk ships can do either teleporting or invisibility, so it is very, very effective against Ur-quan. Since I only played this game once or twice at most, I didn't remember whether it is possible for Pkunk to be killed or not.

Was there a multiplayer mini game available once you finished the main game (it could be SC2, or SC3) ? IIRC, I played a lot of ship vs. ship multiplayer game agains my cousin, but didn't remember the detail.

Got the game for my PC literally the week it came out way back when. I had played the ever living crap out of Star Control 1 (roast'n'toast everything, you know it) and the sequel just consumed me completely for weeks. Easily one of the best and most unique PC games ever made.

The box with the disks and the map are still in a drawer at my parent's house. I should dig them out next time I visit home.

The trolling is weak in this one.

Not trolling, just my opinion.

Minsc: I played the game for as long as I could stand it, which yes, was about 2 hours or so. Definitely didn't click with me, yeah.
And those green dudes in Sol _ARE_ annoying as hell, that's fact.
