I Forgot How Great Metroid Prime Is!

This is why I really want to see a new Metroid by Retro on the Wii U. No Team Ninja nonsense. Tropical Freeze was a good game, but I wish they went with Metroid after that, rather than working on another platformer like it sounds like they're doing.

Retro just finished Donkey Kong. Give them a few years.

I don't mind if it's a 2016 title, just announce the damn thing so I know it's coming. That's all I ask, just tell me it's in development.

Doesn't even need more than a logo for its reveal. I know it'll be amazing, I don't need a CG concept trailer to sell me on the game...

Also, seeing Samus' reflection in your visor when nearby a large blast of light was a little detail that kind of blew my mind.

Metroid Prime was so.. SO ahead of its time. So wonderful the way each aspect of the game came through flawlessly. The 1st person jumping, the morph ball. Amazing! You can tell there's a little bit of Miyamoto's golden touch sprinkled all over the game. Retro's talent was unmatched at that time.

Need HD remasters in my veins...

Yeah it really is something else. I don't think there's been a game that has nailed the atmosphere as quite well as this one.

The game itself wasn't that hard but the music combines with the use of lighting and sound effects and the visor effects made it a lot more scary than it actually was.

I wish I could forget Metroid Prime.

Heck, I wish I could forget a lot of games.

Then I could experience them like new all over again.

I never finished that game.

I got to the latter stages where you have to jump up that long spiral area over the lava with those annoying Metroids constantly harassing you and I'll be damned that I never made it ot the top.

I've never sold my GC or that game because every so often I try to climb that damn stage again!!!

IT VEXES ME TO THIS DAY!!!!
Spoilers for how close you are to the end and how to deal with the metroids:
when in doubt, power bomb. Also, if you reach the top of that spiral, you are at the last boss.

Anyone have any gifs or pics of what the original charge beam looks like? I haven't played GC Prime 1 since I was a kid but recently beat Prime 1 on the new trilogy and am nearing the end of prime 2.

Iirc the reason the trilogy on the wii removes the charge beam effects is because they where 2D or something and they had to completely remodel the beam arm for the first two games.

I'm appreciating what it did at the time even more now that I'm seriously playing Super Metroid for the first time (turns out the gamepad was what I needed to get into it).

Such a flawless re-imagination. I would gladly buy Prime Trilogy HD.

If this was year 2002, neogaf would be filled with Metroid Prime threads the first 8 pages. I remember the hype for this game. Kinda like Watch dogs is getting now.

I second this. A HD compilation a year or so before the next mainline entry on the U. I fear neither will happen though, Nintendo seem to be dragging their feet with Metroid Prime since the Corruption.

And yeah, the 3D Metroid's are all timeless classics. In true Nintendo style, none of them feel at all dated and still hold up incredibly well against most modern day shooters. Something very few games can claim...

Dolphin. my friends.

Yeah it's great. I haven't revisited the Gamecube version in a while, just the Wii one - my Gamecube copy, as much as I played it, was one of the intial run with the elevator glitch. I got used to running halfway across each map to save my progress before taking the elevator and crossing my fingers that it wouldn't lock up.

The Wii version is good too although I really miss the loss of the start screen.

I've never played any of the games of the trilogy but I own both the each game of the trilogy alone and the Wii Trilogy.

I'm starting to feel like playing the first game. I just don't know which version to play. I also don't know what to expect from those games, I don't think I have played anything similar to them. But they seem to be amazing from what everybody says.

Probably the last time Nintendo made a game they didn't feel comfortable making. I love uncomfortable Nintendo.

Honestly, I'm playing the Gamecube version on my HDTV with standard composite cables and it looks great. Well, great's a strong word - it looks "fine". I haven't played the Wii version with the new controls, but you can't beat the original.

As far as what to expect, it's a first person shooter, with the primary focus on exploration and platforming. The "shooter" aspect of it is secondary. Also, the opening moments of the game are on par with the opening moments of Bioshock. And it just gets better from there.

So question to Prime fans:

I played and adored Metroid Prime when it released. I played a bit of the sequel but for some reason found it less compelling. I never played the Wii entry.

I got a WiiU for Christmas, and recently realized how insane it is that there's a 16:9 ified MP trilogy available, tracked a copy down and it's in the mail.

Question is: Do I play Metroid Prime or the Wii installment first? I love nostalgia factor and MP1 is such an excellent game that I know i'll have an awesome time. But I've also heard the Wii entry is great and looks great. I also doubt I'll play all three games, so which one do I dive in on first?

Ridiculous problem, but... well here we are.

Either is a good choice, but the first two Prime games were designed around not being able to aim up and down while moving. Not to say being able to aim freely makes it worse. I'd personally choose the GC versions.

How many people put it down quickly the first time then went back and enjoyed the fuck out of it?
I was pretty disappointed the first time and quit one hour in. Dat feeling when you realize your mistake though.

That's good to know. I was already going to play the GC versions, I like to play the game the way it was designed to be played. Thanks guys!

I'm going to play using composite cables and that's fine, I don't mind. I'm not a fan of Bioshock because I don't like the gunplay but the setting is amazing. I hope I like the gunplay of Metroid. It's nice to know that the gunplay is secondary, I like to explore.

Now, I can't wait to finish Final Fantasy X so that I can begin playing this Metroid.

This was two gens ago(sort of)....... wow..... just wow.

Dolphin can make games even further back than that look very impressive. Banjo Tooie in full 1080p with antialiasing on my HDTV was like a revelation, I half could not believe that came from N64 code, mostly just upscaled.

Who else remembers stepping out into the abyss of Phendrana Drifts for the first time?

What I remember even more vividly is the creeps I got when the lights go out and the Metroids start escaping. It was one of those 'this shit just got real' moments. The feeling of isolation is just amazing. I wonder what the Retro of back then could have created in terms of a horror game.

Amazing especially when you take into account that the game is 12 years, 2 console generations, old.

What do you use as input? KB/M, controller, something else?

As default, you play Wii games on Dolphin using the real Wiimote and accessories, or a 360 pad if you are playing classic controller/gamecube games. I use a 360 pad (or dualshock 4) to play through Xenoblade in full HD.

But using a ÂŁ5 adapter you can plug your Gamecube pads in and use them. The 360 pad is a fine alternative though as the button layout is almost the same.

Prime is such a fantastic game, easily my favorite Metroid game. I would buy an HD re-release in a heartbeat.
Or a Metroid Prime 4 please based Retro.

I don't remember the specifics, but I do remember that the quest to getting the wave beam was one of the best video game moments I'd experienced.

Incredible game; one of the many things it does great is how they nail first person jumping.

So many good things in this game, the atmosphere, the reflection on the visor, the different visors, the subtle effect when shooting a charged blast, the music, no loading screens (just the unfrequent slow to open door), the transition to morph ball, etc etc etc.

Developers of this game must have lived in hell during the development.

There's an account somewhere that all of the staff were eating gallons of Atomic Fireball candies to be awake constantly and polish the game as much as possible.

Also, seeing Samus' reflection in your visor when nearby a large blast of light was a little detail that kind of blew my mind.

Each of the little effects were a small detail that added up to create the atmosphere of the game - raindrops on your visor, steam clouding up your vision, quick flashes of Samus' face from light sources, they're all excellent.

I'm curious, does anyone have any screenshots comparing the Gamecube, Wii Trilogy and Dolphin versions of the game?

I actually dropped the controller and stopped playing for a bit. It was pretty damn terrifying. Especially with how fast the pirates react in PITCH DARK. Those bastards.

It's funny how divisive this game used to be on GAF. I feel that the test of time has more than validated it.

The sequels aren't as well-rounded overall, but they're still worth playing.

Nintendo needs to get Samus and the Metroid universe into a genre that sells.

(Smash doesn't count)
No no no no no

The universe itself isn't particularly interesting (Just look at Other M, which is filled with references to Metroid lore yet makes it look very boring), it's the way the atmosphere is conveyed in the games that's interesting.

And the genre that does it best is Metroidvania.

You can use Power Bombs to instantly kill the Fission Metroids.

You need to see the final boss, it's one of the best in video game history.

Trilogy looks worse than the Gamecube version; they had to remove some of the beam effects because they were not programmed for a free-moving arm cannon.
