I have an RPG itch I need to scratch ...

So I need some help. I am looking to get into a game (preferrable RPG) that offers tons of customization and adventuring. I like MMORPG's but it does not have to be one...

With Final Fantasy 14 on PS4 and Xbone this week...and Elder Scrolls Online....I am at a loss as to what to play.

Can anybody recommend a game?
1) Final Fantasy 14
2) Elder Scrolls Online
3) Something else under my radar???

based on adventuring and customization alone i would recommend dark souls.

if youre looking for a good story too, then im at a loss.

Unable to comply with current request. Please supply additional parameters:

1) Platform?
2) Do you like turn-based or action-based battle systems?
3) Any definite no-nos, like anime art style or sci-fi?

Tells us what you like!

Are you looking for something more open-ended, do-whatever-you-want, or something more focused?

I was thinking about that as well... Does it offer lots of variety?

You can increase your character stats as you wish and the equipment varies a lot in terms of allowing for different fighting styles.

If you want something less stressful than the Souls series, Dragons Dogma most def.

If you haven't played it yet and can get hold of a copy for a reasonable price, try Xenoblade (emulated in HD if possible). One of the best JRPGs last gen that too many people missed out on because it came late in the Wii's life cycle.

The combat is very MMO-ish (with AI-controlled party members), and the world design and music are both top-notch. Being a JRPG with pre-made party members it doesn't have as much customisation as I'd like, but equipping arts/skills/gems and varying the party composition is enough (and yeah, if you play it, make sure you change your party leader occasionally - one of the common complaints is that the battle system gets a bit boring if you stick with the same character all the time).

Dark Souls is currently the only recent game for me that has managed to make exploration feel rewarding. And yes, it does offer tons of variety. You keep thinking you've seen everything and it keeps throwing new areas with distinct themes at you.

PS4 and XBO don't have very many RPGs at this point and time. It's too early for a wide selection of RPGs to be available. Dark Souls II would be the obvious recommendation, if you're interested in western-inspired JRPGs, however, there aren't any traditional JRPGs available on next-gen just yet. If you own a Wii, check out Xenoblade. That has tons of exploration and customization. Also give The Last Story a try, another Wii JRPG.

A lore you have to search and loot to understand the lore itself, love it.

i still didn't think much of the story when it's put together. and truth be told, im not a fan of the format either. i would prefer a dark souls with a pronounced narrative.

If you miss having choices in an rpg, I recommand you to try : Sorcery and Lone Wolf on mobile. I recently played them and I had a good time.

And no, not all mobile games suck, specially Lone Wolf. So much better than Banner Saga.

If you haven't played it already, I really strongly recommend Dragon's Dogma.

EDIT - but yeah, we really need to know what platform or platforms you have.

Leaning towards Dark SOuls 2...
So any of you guys/ gals played ESO or the FF14? Are they not worth the time (assuming money for the monthly fee is not a problem)?

FF14 has a decent story and gameplay. Though thats if you dont mind partying with people as you have to for some story event dungeons and whatnots. Its pretty easy to reach max level also.

Crafting is enjoyable.

If you like MMOs its worth checking out esp with all the new stuff thats been added.

They're both good games, for different reasons.

ESO is Elder Scrolls, but online. Plays like it, feels like it, looks like it. You run around the world and look for quests. Sure, there are hub towns, but the real treat of the game is exploration. Crafting system is quite good, graphics are great, music is nice, and gameplay is Elder Scrolls, for better or worse.

FFXIV is a very traditional MMO. That's not a bad thing. Graphics are great, music is FANTASTIC, and the story is alright. It plays it safe, but does it well.

I personally enjoy ESO now more than I ever enjoyed FFXIV. It's good, but I don't need another WoW after playing it for five years.

FF XIV has a pretty stale end game and the combat is mostly uninspired, imo. But getting to level 50 and enjoying all the dungeons can last you a good month or two of play. Dark Souls 2 is where you want to be. Come and Praise the Sun.

I'm not a big fan of MMO's but I really enjoyed playing FFXIV. So I think it's certainly worth looking into. Also in the O.P. it says FFXIV is coming out for Xbox One this week. It's only coming out PS4 unfortunately.

Final Fantasy XIV is great though and obviously you don't have a problem with a subscription so I say go for it.

I say try out both Elder Scrolls and FFXIV for free with the one month trial and continue the one that you like most.

I personally think MMOs are a waste of money but that's just me.

I don't think either of those games have a "free trial", just a free month with purchase. Getting both would cost about $80.

For the OP - FFXIV is pretty decent if you're kind of in the mood for a mindless, cute MMO with nice music and scenery. I've been zoning out to it this week and I'm having a good time. I probably won't get really into it, but I had the same itch as you and this is working for me. As was said above, it's not super risky by any means, just a fun and classic MMO with a nice world.

I will also throw in my lot for Dark Souls or Dark Souls 2, they're pretty much my GOATs, along with the original Deus Ex and FFVII.

I am in the same boat. With Game of Thrones coming back on HBO, I want to satisfy that itch too..

I went with Elder Scrolls Online. It looks better than all the alternatives and is getting rave reviews for it's questing and campaign.

If you liked Ocarina of Time, definitely try out Dragon's Dogma: Dark Arisen.
It's OoT TNT. It's like the dev's liked OoT but were reading Beserk at the time.
