• Hey Guest. Check out your NeoGAF Wrapped 2025 results here!

I have been using my index finger on W, in WASD

This may be the first time OP asks "Am I the only one?" and he can actually be the only one.

This got me thinking. Are MOBAs supposed to be played with 4 fingers on QWER? I played them like an offset WASD, so 3 fingers on QWE, pinky not used at all, but who knows now.

OP is still a freak.

You need shift and ctrl in dota, maybe in LoL it is feasible (though I remember needing ctrl to control annie's bear).

This is Dendi (at the time he was considered the best dota 2 player) training, his pinky finger rests on shift even though he isn't using it:

Instant boneitis trying to do it how you described. Damn, dude.

Well done. Maybe if everyone played like that I could actually be a decent competitive player

I'd like to see how your hand looks in that position. Even regular wasd , middle on w and s, ring on s and index on d feels uncomfortable to me. Can't imagine this lol

Looks like this:

It does look pretty weird.

The "right" way looks better, but my hand is not used to that position. Muscle memory takes over and there is a slight tinglig feeling.
But Ill think about where I place my hand and Im sure I can use the correct way if I force myself to use it for a few weeks so I can unlearn muscle memory.

.... how exactly are you typing if that was your hand position for WASD? o_o;

Probably just a side effect of thinking about it. I think I can type pretty okay-ish.

How have you not developed carpal tunnel or some other wrist issue? That looks like one of the most uncomfortable ways to rest your hands on a keyboard I have ever seen.

I probably have. I have been feeling it a bit in both hands a bit.
I do try and stretch my fingers/hands tough in downtime so I hope that minimizes it
I probably sit wrong too >.<

Gaf can be mean sometimes, everyone judge me too when I say that I can't play anything if I don't have both axis inverted :'(, I'm with you OP, play like you want to!

Well, I want to play with the middle finger on W because I can then hit more buttons at the same time, I just dont get how I did not see it before. Must be great to MMOs lol.

I was playing some Devil Daggers, a twitch arena fps and saw some vids of people bunny hopping. I have played Quake Live/UT3 and some CS (50h or so) but never got into bunny hopping or what it was.

So I realised that I cant hit D and space to jump at the same time as I use thumb for those buttons. And I realised I have been playing wrong and looked and some WASD images and this thread:

So yea themoreyouknow.jpg

I know it is an innocent mistake in terms of thinking that is how you do it, but after so many years of doing it the normal way, just attempting to out my fingers that way has me internally screaming. I'd hope you get used to the normal way and see why keybindings are the way they are

I use the keyboard like normal but my mouse I use middle finger on the left button and ring finger on the right. Was feeling the earlier stages of carpel coming on so I switched for a bit but never switched back.

I use my ring finger on W. Always felt natural since that's what finger goes to W when I find the F homing key with my index finger.

Judging by all the middle finger W users, I'm an anomaly too, I guess.

I pressed the spacebar with my index finger when typing from around 2003 to 2008. No idea how I developed that habit, but I could still type ~60 WPM. Took me a few months to unlearn, but I sort of had to in order to pass a typing class in high school. (Even then, I always used by left thumb because of playing shooters with WASD.)

That's like holding an N64 controller like this.

Didn't how uncomfortable it is to hit keys in that position tip you off that you might have your hand positioned wrong?

I held the N64 controller like this. OP's WASD method is way weirder

As somebody that uses ESDF (technically >OEU) on a matrix layout keyboard, the thought of (ab)using your hand like that makes me cringe. There's too many people that never learned how to type properly, and developed bad habits. Habits that'll likely bite them in the ass someday. =( Standard keyboards already put the left hand at a less than optimal angle. Don't make it even worse by doing what you are. Fix what you're doing ASAP lest you want to risk carpal tunnel/RSI later in life.

I thought I did this exact same thing and was reading all the replies like I was a megafreak until I realized I put my ring finger on W, not my index finger. Is that normalish?

This got me thinking. Are MOBAs supposed to be played with 4 fingers on QWER?

Nah.

Mobas aren't about QWER, they are about nimble access to all of the keys in that clump (the entire purpose of using WASD is that it is surrounded by ideal keybinds). Stop, attack move, items (should be in that clump), DF (for games/heroes that apply).

If you hover on QWER with your pinky on Q you cannot easily access zxcv, which along with mouse buttons are my ideal item binds.

Ex. every line of keys used by a valuable bind:

1234(56) - control groups
qwer - powers
asdf - attack move, stop, slots for heroes that have more than 4 powers
zxcv - items

If you move that up or down (items on numbers) you lose something.

That's my ideal set up anyways.

Holy fuck op.

This would be like me sitting my fat ass on a thumbtack for 20 years, and not having the common sense to remove it.

ESDF should of been the standard. Why they deviated from the home position to lose access to more keys is beyond me.

What is up with your thumb? Is that a second knuckle?

Always go ESDF.

http://use-esdf.org/

"Quake did not default to WASD. The default controls in quake were actually the arrow keys.
The Quake community started using ESDF and WASD (as did Doom before Quake).
However, the big push toward WASD happened when Thresh (Dennis Fong) won John Carmack's Ferrari in the first big Quake tournament.
After that people started sending his Quake cfg file around and using his settings in hopes of being as good as him. He used WASD and the rest is history." (Jon A.)
