• Hey Guest. Check out your NeoGAF Wrapped 2025 results here!

I hope Cross-Gen stays for a while.

I don't. I'm getting a PS4 launch day, I wish publishers like Ubi would go full force on games like Watch Dogs without considering last gen.

I agree.

Im part of #PS3Fourmoreyears

The PS3 has plenty of life left and while next gen is exciting... Nothing has been shown IMO worth the jump and reinvestment. I have a backlog worthy of a 3 month gaming spree to take care of.

I'll take a raincheck when Next Gen shows me more expanded and fuller worlds, better AI, and better scenarios.

I don't want the same stuff I get now that just looks better.

PS4/Bone need to leave PS3/360 behind to really show off some changes though.

I cannot disagree more with this. As a an individual that will have all of the next gen consoles at launch I would rather not wait to get to the true built from the ground up next gen titles. I want to see what can be done and current gen will just impede that. I love my current gen consoles but its just time to let them go. I have had a 360 since launch and I am ready for new things.

I don't mind cross-gen games, but chances are if your game is coming on multiple platforms including next-gen, I'm going for the PC/next-gen versions if it means better IQ, framerates, features, etc.

There's no way I'm touching games like ACIV, Watch Dogs, and Destiny on current-gen hardware.

I dont understand how people are satisfied with current gen. This gen you were lucky to have COLOR in a game rather than a brown mess.

Great post OP, I couldn't agree with you more. It's all supply and demand. A lot of people are crying that cross-gen games will hold back next gen games, but I'm afraid we're all stuck with cross-gen games until the mass market starts to adopt the new systems. The mass market determines what gets developed, not the hardcore niche that is dying for next gen. It's unfair, but that's the way it is.

Until next gen systems are priced at a mass market level, their installation bases will be too small to develop for without cross gen ports. AAA game development is just too expensive to undertake without reaching that 100M+ install base of PS3/360. I'd estimate that the mass market price point would be no more than $300; that's why PS3 and 360 are the only home consoles that are currently selling. And don't forget, 360 and PS3 didn't start selling well themselves until they got closer to that $300 price point.

There's a reason why there are more cross-gen games this time than ever before.

Diminishing returns. It's going to be very difficult to compelling next gen when the best that can be said so far are partical effects, lighting, more players in multiplayer, 60 fps, 1080p, and detailed crowds in a sports game. Pretty trivial stuff from a gameplay perspective.

You both aren't wrong. Its just that these systems still hold the status quo at the moment. I still argue that majority of gamers don't even notice such performance issues that we on GAF speak of regularly. I think there was even a thread about this a couple days ago.

In regards of pushing the limits. Yes, we've hit the max. As an entertainment source, no. 360 and PS3 are the gift that keeps giving.

What do we honestly expect from Sony and MS? To kill these systems instantly upon Next Gen launch? No. Like it or not, were stuck with these systems for at least 2 years minimum and I still see titles coming in till the very end. The install base is just to large to give up business wise...

We all have one of these systems in our house right now and it still functions as a perfectly fine entertainment source. The ecosystem is definitely different gentlemen. If anything, these systems just may be blessed with a second wind due to new lower price points and a possible future redesigns.

They will effectively drop down a tier from primetime slot and play entrylevel to a new gaming market. The softwares there. The functionality is still there. And they are very much so still relevant.

This next gen future everyone is craving isn't realistically going to get started until 2016. Depending on software, maybe late 2015 could speed up the process..

If anything, the Wii U has a hard time on its hands because it is literally squashed between these two generations. Its going to depend on MS and Sony's strategies but don't count the hardware out.

Like I said earlier, this isn't PS2/ OGXbox / DC / GC anymore... This is a new breed.

You misunderstand. I completely get that it's smart business. That these consoles have a userbase that will buy games.

I don't care. I'm absolutely selfish. I want what /I/ want because it's better for ME. :P

I am aware that this not realistically going to happen, and so I am resigned to accept that we'll continue to get games held back by hardware nearly a decade old. But at least there will be some exclusives and first party games to show us what is possible.

I'm sorry no. PC gamers have been bragging about "next-gen" features with their maxed out pc's only to find the gameplay & level-design are still left to current-gen quota. With the next-gen consoles sporting more power than before I want the developers to fully intend to extract every single last power to provide a superior experience...

the likes no current-gen can ever hope to achieve.

With the PS3 and 360 have ~60 million units sold and in the hands of the public I can see cross-gen titles hangin' around for a long time- longer if the market doesn't immediately consume the newer consoles (I predict they won't make sales that will discourage cross-genning)

Interestingly enough, the WiiU may benefit from such cross-genning as titles that run on the PS3/360 should be an easy port- but we'll see what developers decide to test.

If it's anything like FFXIV, then I don't really mind. Folks who want to keep playing on old console are free to do so, but people who move to the new one are deserved to have better experience.

I still have a bunch of PS3 games I need to finish, and the future of the PS3 looks as bright as ever (not include the 2006).

I hope they don't, for two reasons -
1) Let me catch up to ALL the games I've been missing this generation. And there are a ton of them.
2) Let the developers focus on all the new hardware. Let them study it as fast as they can so they'll know better and faster how to utilize it.

No, I love the current gen consoles, and will leave my ps3 out for awhile, but that doesn't mean I do not want updated consoles. These consoles have been around for far to long and it is time to move on.

I couldn't agree more OP. I'm in no rush for next gen. I know I'm beating a long, rotten corpse of a horse with this but lack of backward compatibility really squashed any immediate interest in non-Wii U next gen consoles so these cross gen games are very much appreciated. Also, I'm not quite ready to be paying for online on PS4 so games like Guilty Gear Xrd being on PS3 still is also very much appreciated.

GTA5 was proof to me that this gen needs to die quickly so we can move on. Let's get good looking big scope games in full HD, 60 frames per second, and plenty of AA.

Devs aren't supporting the Wii U anyway, so the better would be the moment the PS4 is out, PS3 projects are no more.

I guess Dark Souls 2 can come out.

You kidding me? Developers make games brown to hide bad textures

So they made textures brown on the PS3 to hide bad textures but they didn't need to make everything brown during the previous gens to hide those bad textures?

The games are brown because a lot of them are war type games and they feel like the brownish grey lends more to a doom and gloom atmosphere.

Cross Gen will be round for a few years I think. I can imagine FIFA, COD etc doing Cross Gen for at least the next two years.

Also Destiny, Dying light and Titanfall have been confirmed as Cross Gen. I have a feeling we are in for some terrible PS360 versions though. How are they going to keep the zombie count in Dying Light without the framerate going through the floor.

I want it to end already. Games peaked in terms of image quality on current gen consoles. The limitations are very apparent after 7-8 years.

I'm not getting a console at launch, but there's no way I'm getting a cross-gen game on an older console. I'll just wait until I pick up the next-gen console to get the game. Hopefully the game(s) in question will be cheaper by then as well.

It'll be around for a little while. This year it's up-ports to next gen, next year it'll be down-ports from next gen. After that it'll probably only be licensed stuff and sports games, big releases will probably go next gen only

Fuck no. The Division, which is pretty much the only next-gen only multiplatform release announced looks a whole generation better than any of it's competition. There will no doubt be some sacrifices next time we see it, but the gulf is pretty stunning.

I hope they don't so developers can leave the shackles of current gen behind.

Damn, got it in one! This is how I feel about crossgen titles.

Got my launch day looking whack as fuck. I'm literally dropping $400 to buy the PS4 and buying NO launch titles because the only thing that's really next-gen are Killzone and Knack and I don't want either, so my first title is going to be inFamous: Second Son.

That has absolutely nothing to do with the power of the console.

So they made textures brown on the PS3 to hide bad textures but they didn't need to make everything brown during the previous gens to hide those bad textures?

The games are brown because a lot of them are war type games and they feel like the brownish grey lends more to a doom and gloom atmosphere.

I dunno guy. The new Killzone is looking colorful as all heck. So's Destiny. Heck, that plus the promised multiple planets/expansive setting is the main reason I'm even LOOKING at Destiny; I hate FPS games.

There may be something to the idea that basically this gen needed all those greys, browns and general earth-tone crap so we wouldn't see how crappy games actually looked.

Developers have little or no say in the matter. Most of them would much rather focus on a smaller number of platforms. Preferably one. Publishers will stop requiring current gen titles when sales figures show that return on investment is better on next gen. Period.

It doesn't matter what the installed base is. It matters whether the bulk of those who jump on new titles make the move. If AC4 and Watch_Dogs sell millions of copies on next gen this holiday, and show weakening sales on current gen? The move will come faster and we won't see big budget holiday titles on 360/PS3 next year. Otherwise it will take a year or two for the transition.
