• Hey Guest. Check out your NeoGAF Wrapped 2025 results here!

I just downloaded a trial version of WOW

I can never get past the initial grind phases in these games. I've tried getting into WoW a few times and always lose interest and uninstall it rather quickly. I'm lucky I guess.

I had a choice of either a) being addicted to WoW and spending tons of time playing and spending $13 or so a month on fees, or

b) leaving WoW, being addicted to other games and spending tons of time playing and spending ~$150 or so a month on buying new software.

I chose option "b". Can't say my life improved substantially. Some whisper of a mysterious option "c" but I cannot begin to imagine what dark sorcery that would involve.

WoW's fun. Don't take it too seriously and you'll enjoy it.

That's exactly it. Collecting endless wolf pelts should not be even close to fun in any logical world, but it is. So entertaining, but so mindlessly pointless, especially for $15 a month. Social aspects be damned, I'll stick to my TF2.

I would have tried to get into this game but banned myself because of uni so now I can get into one... I think I may wait for Age of Conan to be honest.

But like all the other posters say... remember there is a world outside.

Interaction in a virtual world is not inferior to interaction in the outside world, just different. Play the fucking game if you want to, lol.

Exactly, wtf is up with all the drama queens here?

It's a great game, just don't get sucked up too much in all the end-game tier 36 epic gear bullshit. Stick to some fun and casual 5 man instancing with friends. I regard WoW as one of the best co-op experiences out there. Had lots of fun with it.

That's just the thing, it's so easy to get sucked into the game. There are people that simnply don't play the game that much and I say good for them, but for a lot of people that's almost impossible. They do all the stuff that the gamedesigners want you to do. If you're one of those many many people than WoW is indeed quite dangerous is a lot of ways.

I've been playing very casually with my girlfriend for the past few months... it can be a whole lot of fun if you don't take it seriously.

But why is it okay to hype the problems of WoW but not any other game? GAF prides itself at defending games against the media yet does a 180 when it comes to MMOs, especially WoW? .

after the time I wasted with FFXI, I will NEVER play another game like it. Do yourself a favor and don't do it.

Get outside, have some sex, enjoy life with your friends and family.

Because it makes you want to play WoW and only WoW and you think it's the only game you'll ever need when there are tons of better games out there that don't have this addictive streak. Now I am sounding like a drama-queen, but WoW skews your vision of games.

Also MMO's are designes to be like a second life, it's simply not worthwile to play the game for half an hour, it just begs to be played for hours on end and you start losing sight of time and things around you. Other games do that too, but they tend to...you know...end. WoW just teases you over and over with better skills and equipment that you can't quite yet use and if you do get those things, a new bunch of items become your next obsession and it never, ever ends.

Yeah but... Most of GAF does this anyway, just with numerous other software titles. It's not like WoW is the only game a GAFfer might play for longer than 30 minute sessions.

Just the other day several posters were talking about pulling an all-nighter playing My Life as a King, of all things.

In terms of quests, no...not really (until Outland at least). The main appeal of the WoW is the end-game content (arena's, raiding), I've never seen anyone get addicted to WoW from leveling.

I can't think of anyone I know who wasn't sucked in by the leveling. Of course, few in my guilds or few of my rl friends care about PvP and raiding.

I tried it, and all the starter towns were empty, went to the nearest town and no one wanted to help. I can understand why, but I hate this about MMOs. After a certain time, all the starter towns are deserted and everyone else is off doing high level stuff.

You guys are crazy. I've had WoW since December and I'm most definately not addicted to it. Maybe it's because I need to buy game cards and after my 2 months is up I take a month off of playing?

Don't know what the big deal is.

I've played the game for a month to take advantage of the 30-day free trial, and I stopped cold after day 29. I can thank the fact that:

1.) I'm a cheap bastard.

2.) It seemed that no one really wanted to befriend a gnome n00b, and so I never had the chance to explore the social-network aspect of the game, which is one of the main reasons people keep playing.

I can definitely see why gamers get hooked, however. The vast, open-world of the game touched a few notes within this high fantasy fan and I took a number of great screenshots of my character, set in front of a mountainous or grassy backdrop, or while riding atop those winged beasts.

Eh, I guess everyone's experiences are different.

I'll admit when I got the game at release leveling was pretty fun, but that was in large part due to the fact that everyone was doing it. Every time I went to level a toon after that it was hell....the zones were empty, instancing was really hit or miss (in terms of the competency of the group), and BG's felt pointless. If I could have convinced 4 friends to roll with me and level at the same pace I could see it being fun, but that wasn't the easiest thing to get people to do.

It Calls to me, I most look into it.

Play it. Enjoy it. If you wanna play hard core, you can. If you want to play causally, you can. It's up to you. The game doesn't require raiding and sinking your life into it, so don't listen to few that might try and say different. I'm sure they've never even played the game...

I think that the reason the social stuff gets people addicted is not because it's so much fun to play with other people; it's because we're wired to value things that people around us value. When we're around people who want levels and loot, we end up wanting them too. Once you're away from those people for a while, then those things lose their perceived value because they're inherently worthless.

I downloaded the trail two days ago and I'm up to level 7 already.

I don't see the appeal just yet and I dunno if I coming back to the game anytime soon. So far the missions consists of killing x number of crag boar or cave trolls or running this hot cup of whatever to someone within five minutes.

Surely it gets better than that!
It doesn't.
At least, not within the first hundred hours or so.

Raiding is better, but the game is designed to waste your time getting to the actually interesting content. Such is the bullshit associated with a subscription-driven game.

I played it. Bored me to death in a couple of days. Then I uninstalled.

WoW is like reading a shitty 800 pages long book with 100 (presumably) good last pages. I don't want to do boring and repetitive task to have some fun 200 hours later. Fuck this game.

I did have some fun playing with some friends but it was a hassle to get them together and the game (like any MMORPG... except E.V.E.) can't be played in short bursts because everything takes time.

I was going to post the impressions of the 2 week trial I played but then this just sums up everything.

seriously. The possibility of addiction is there like it is with every game really, but you're not going to end up sucking dicks in the bathroom of the olive garden for subscription money

I like playing WoW like any other game I own. I sit down, play for an hour or so, that's it. I LOVE the way the game looks, and I really like killing things with swords and fireballs. I have never even participated in a raid. I only go in instances when in a pickup group.

I solo all the time. I found when I had friends, it was a pain in the ass. "Come do this, what are you doing tomorrow, what level are you, what time are you going to be on later" etc. etc. I never joined a guild for that reason. I hate complete strangers bothering me about shit. I guess I'm weird when it comes to mmo's, I just like walking around and killing crap. :D

shhhhh, I told you to stop telling that to everyone. :/

Enjoy the trial, altho trial accounts are so limited it's sad. WoW can be fun even just for going out and seeing all the different locations and dungeons, with some of the lower level ones being the best ones in atmosphere and design imho (Shadowfang Keep, how much I love it).
