I just lost a job offer because I had high blood pressure.

That sucks but if driving through a bad place spikes the blood pressure, then driving through potentially rough areas plus the stress of actually getting sales may make it even worse.

I initially got the 150 number from the AFP website, I am not sure where they inferred that after reading the JNC 8 paper.

150/90, unless he has diabetes in which case it would be 140/90. 120/80 is no longer the case.

For both diabetics JNC 8 is 140/90 from what I was taught.

Irregardless his systolic BP is high for at rest. Perhaps you should see your physician.

You're a Texan with slightly high blood pressure and they denied you a job? If all employers did that there would be a hell of a high unemployment rate in Texas :o

What makes me is upset is wondering how 300lbs cops with huge beer bellies who couldn't run down an old lady in a rascal keep their jobs. Or seeing cashiers in stores who don't know how to fucking count change and need the computer to tell them what to give out.

FFS I had an easier time getting through MEPS.

That sucks OP. You should have taken some vasodilators like nitroglycerin lol.
I applied with a company that checks your credit score as a requirement for hiring process. Once I got back the report it said I was "competitive" but I do have good credit.

I was 112/68 3 weeks ago. After my car accident last week I was 200 something over ninety something. The other people in the car were unconscious and didn't have BP issues.

So we're assuming the OP is over 60 now?

However, there is insufficient evidence in hypertensive persons younger than 60 years for a systolic goal, or in those younger than 30 years for a diastolic goal, so the panel recommends a BP of less than 140/90 mm Hg for those groups based on expert opinion. The same thresholds and goals are recommended for hypertensive adults with diabetes or nondiabetic chronic kidney disease (CKD) as for the general hypertensive population younger than 60 years
But luckily you're just the dermatologist.

I though Rev said he wasn't going to drunk post anymore. That sucks OP, but see your primary doc and see what he says about your resting bp. Though, I suspect an employer could have just done it wrong and given a bad reading.

Assuming you're American, it might have something to do with health insurance premiums. There might be a mark (160) where it costs more to insure you.

OP, couple things:

- 160 blood pressure is high, you should mention it at your next physical or bring it up to a doctor at a minute clinic if you don't have regular insurance

- 2 to 3 beers a night is pretty high if you're doing this every night. I'm nobody to judge anybody's alcohol consumption because I drink like a fish on Saturdays, but 2 or 3 beers every day is a lot of beer, especially because you probably spike on the weekends (like most)

- 6', 165 lbs... damn what are your secrets? :)

2-3 beers a night

The 150/90 number is for people above 60 years old.

Recommendation 1
In the general population aged ≥60 years, initiate pharmacologic treatment to lower blood pressure (BP) at systolic blood pressure (SBP) ≥150 mm Hg or diastolic blood pressure (DBP) ≥90 mm Hg and treat to a goal SBP <150 mm Hg and goal DBP <90 mm Hg. (Strong Recommendation – Grade A)

Recommendation 3
In the general population <60 years, initiate pharmacologic treatment to lower BP at SBP ≥140 mm Hg and treat to a goal SBP <140 mm Hg. (Expert Opinion – Grade E)

Everyone is just gonna quote your first post and be snarky.

They have reason to be snarky.

Dude, this might be a wake up call for your BP.

My BP has gotten up to 135/90 twice, and my doctor was concerned that was too high despite being justified. First time I was 7 months pregnant and in a car accident. The second time was during labor.

162 is really high. It shouldn't spike that high because of traffic. You should seriously see a doc about it.

dude they may have saved your life.

it is so sad how we are so advanced but do such a terrible job at the education/doctor level when it comes to the most basic healthcare!

you can't say that you don't have high blood pressure because of how you feel or this or that.

you need your checkups, high blood pressure isn't just for fat diabetic drinkers!

a family member of mine just had a stroke back in march. i found out that he previously was seeing a doctor and on meds for high blood pressure and just quit fucking going!!!!!!

bad habits, not getting checked up or even checking blood pressure on his own, and a few major stressfull life events led directly up to this stroke. i don't think its coincidence.

how hes more likely to have all sorts of problems in the future, he was rushed to emergency surgery and pulled through but still isn't back to work and they yanked his license immediately.

So what about white coat hypertension? Shouldn't I at least get a second chance?

I showed up on time and early on both of my interviews, shouldn't I at least get a chance for another try to check my BP?

I spent nearly three weeks going through this process.

The company is concerned that you might have a heart attack while driving their company car and then if you crash it into a house and kill a family then they would be liable.

162 is an abnormally high blood pressure, you really should see a doctor because if you're otherwise healthy you should be on blood pressure meds.

Go get a test at one of those machines at a local pharmacy or something to double confirm. Like others have said, most people start getting treatment when it rises above 140.

I tried that after I was upset about it at a local Albertsons which actually had a new machine.

It said I was 180/80.

wtf man, that is high as fuck. Forget the job man, go see a doc this could mean your life. I have prehypertension (140/85ish) and I'm fairly in shape and active. But my doc wanted me to lose an additional 10-15 lbs.. You aren't healthy man.

This is a picture of what my upper torso currently looks like by the way, It's safe for work. I'm not out of shape but I'm not at athlete levels either.

edit: don't click the link if you don't want to see a man's naked chest which might have some hair.

2-3 drinks a night at 165 lbs is a LOT. Also, 160 is a really high first blood pressure #. Definitely stuff you should take care of.

My doc said that max 2 drinks a night at ~220 lbs was OK.
