I just love NXE, it's so great...

I realy wish they would remove Rock Band/ Guitar Hero etc. DLC from the "New releases" section or whatever it is called. It should be given a seperate section or something. It makes what would be useful information completely useless.

The stupid part of all this is that they did give it a separate section, they just didn't remove it from the new addons section :/ Just an awful design decision :/

I do wonder; what's the name of those "squares with images" that appear on the PS3 showing games, news, movies, etc? On the games section, on the movies, etc.

Since some say that "there are no ads" on it.

On the "NXE" topic.
I have no big complaints. If anything that I'd like it to be faster and that it should start (default) on the 'My Xbox' section; instead of 'Community'. But I like the overall look and design. Never had problems with difficulty on finding things. If I'm looking for Indie games, I go to the Indies section. DLC? Game Add-on section. And so on. Advertising and promotions are part of everything now days, and at least to me it kinda adds some life to it. And it helps when noticing last minute offers, or a game I saw one day, but forgot about it. I also like how it's already integrated with the overall online service; unlike the "other services" which are disconnected from the rest of the design.

The "What's new" section? There's option to turn off booting to that icon.

It takes anywhere from 45-60 seconds to load my game library, and I've made rather extreme efforts to pare my XBLA/XBLIG down to about 20 games. I can't stress enough how frustratingly slow it is.
This frustrates me as well. From what I hear they have fixed it in the beta though.

This?

(appears on the Games, Videos, etc.)
Well, good to know anyway; though technically thate ads are there, just that it can be removed. ;p

Go to System Settings -> Display [What's New] and you can turn it off. I've sort of taken a liking to it since it updates with your most recently played games. It becomes a quick launch window of sorts.

Ad hominems from a high horse..? That's the only direction a UI discussion just HAS to go..? Really?

"Objectively bad"..? Oh come on...

What is unfortunate in the current UIs is launching proprietary apps to go into something which should be a part of the framework UI. Like f.ex. the video marketplace in NXE and the PSN store in the XMB.

Wow, arrogant.

I own a PS3. I don't find it any easier to navigate and I find the store to be harder.

It definitely looks less busy though, I'd even go so far as to say classy but personally (I'm allowed an opinion right?) I prefer the colorful look of NXE.

PS3 dash is faster for getting in to games on the HDD, that is for sure.

Seems to me to totally be a preference thing and not "objective" at all.

Both of you counter my claim that the NXE has poor usability with admissions of poor usability in the UI?

Can you name a use case where it's less usable than the Wii or PS3? Again, if you think it's ugly, bloated, looks like shit, great, have a field day. But if you think it's unusable or slow, please name what you think it's slow at doing.

User customisation of most accessed data.

Wii has this, and wins by a mile. You put your most accessed data where you want it, right there on your main menu.

PS3 has this to a limited extent with user definable categories for downloaded games, and of course 'internet apps' like your facebooks etc can be bookmarked via the bowser.

NXE has, errrr... most recently played I guess.

Oh, please, I can throw the exact same argument back at you but it wouldn't make me right.

I have all three system, and they all their pro and con but to said NXE it is not usable compare to Wii or PS3. In some way it's definitely better than those two especially on-line intergration and such. It sure have PS3 beat when it come to patching game or download anything. As much as I hate the Zune app on NXE it still lightyear faster than downloading video from PSN.

I didn't say it was unusable. I said it had poor usability compared to the Wii or the PS3.

FYI 'patching' and 'downloading' aren't aspects of UI usability, they are functions of the console. Feel free to argue that the 360 has better functionality than either the PS3 or the Wii if you want, but that has nothing to do with my assertion that the NXE UI is the least usable of the three.

I don't mind the NXE much. Just go to game marketplace and ''explore content'' to get what you want. If you're looking for something about a game you have already, go to my xbox, game library, name of the game then hit download... I suppose some of the panels are product placement for DLC or the game themselves. That would explain why some game always get a panel for new stuff while others don't. About the ads, I agree that it's insulting that we have ads even though we are paying 50$ a year for the service.

I like how you intentionally scrolled past the first part panel on NXE in some of those shots to showcase just the ads and ignore the fact that the default on each of those blades is the thing you would actually want to select while navigating.

Yes, this is true, although some of your emphasis here is a little weird. Why give the PS3 credit for bookmarking Facebook when the 360 has a Facebook app that's just as accessible? In terms of game content, you got it right; Wii lets you put the icon where you want, PS3 lets you use pseudo-folders and has a mini most-recently played list, NXE has most recently played and separates XBLA / Full Games / Indie / Demos from each other (although it is worth noting that separation is machine enforced, not user selected).

In terms of how that actually impacts the usability of the UIs in general, I'd say not a whole lot. The real killer here for the 360 is the "List all my games" function being slow as hell; personally, I think that the "recent" content list is pretty good, but when you want to go outside recent content, you have to wait the unbearably long time to list everything. If they sped that up, I wouldn't view this as a significant usability handicap at all.

I think your rankings on this use case are fair. If you broaden to general user customization, I'd reverse your rankings. I think this speaks to a flaw in NXE that ought to be corrected, but not anything resembling poor usability as a whole rather than in the case of this one specific use case.

This x 1000

1) I never understood why the category designations, like "Friends" or "Community", are just represented by floating text instead of having colors or symbols
2) (mentioned earlier, but I've thought about it too) Why can't all of my games, starting with what is in the disc drive and continuing with my on-hard drive games, be listed in the My Xbox category as coverflow? Or at least have multiple ways to categorize the games.

Oh nice. A new section in the Game Marketplace. Same bullshit. And why MS keep putting the same game over and over again? I believe I saw a Halo Reach square 3-4 times in the dashboard, Is this necessary to show me this again?

.
Because its Microsoft's Biggest Franchise.

They also need to add a scaling option for the icons.

If I want my icons tiny so I can have some floozy with big gams slutting up my wallpaper, I should be able to.

Wow, I didn't know there were NXE defenders.

No its probably not as bad as some are making it out to be, but it is really really poorly designed and not fun to use.

Wii's menu is simple (too simple) and useable. XMB is elegant and simple with a few niggles. NXE just sucks.

Meh, I don't mind NXE at all. Seriously, it's like 3 seconds to start a game, 3 seconds to get to Netflix, 3 seconds to check my friends online. ... I don't understand this OH MY GOD HORRIBLEST THING EVAR that people are spouting.

It's simple to use once you get use to it, just like anything. I like the PS3 menu a bit better just because you get to use your own picture for the whole screen, but even that still has the store popup on every menu it seems.

Meh, as long as I can play a game in seconds they all work fine for me.

I have mixed feelings about NXE. In my opinion, I definitely think it was somewhat of an upgrade from the blades, and it's not rocket science to navigate.

My problem is that, especially in comparison to the PS3's XMB, NXE looks like the Vegas Strip. It's cool, it's got some useful stuff in it, but they need to put the epilepsy warning up before launching it.

Obviously different strokes for different folks, but if NXE = Vegas, then XMB = ..umm, I don't know... Boulder, CO. Just two differing approaches to presenting nearly the same content/functionality. It's the Mac/Windows of video games... whether your prefer form or function as the dominant trait.

Most of the time the tile I want is the first one in the list, and couldn't care less about clicking right into the ad madness, but sometimes there's video in them and it's just a bit of sensory overload.

My Xbox is my favorite gadget in my home. I use it for games, TV (Media Center extender), movies, music, etc. I can get around just fine in NXE, and again, like it more than the blades, but it could use some subtle toning down, IMO.

How long has NXE been around? Even it was your first day using it, you can easily learn where to go for your gaming needs..

...which THEN results in others pulling some holier-than-thou card, visiting a video games and video game-related topics discussion website to mock video game-related discussion.

...which in turn, draws out people thinking THAT'S cool, and agreeing with THEM:

We're just talking about video game stuff here, in a thread dedicated to a discussion about people's opinions on console UI's. Did you have something to add to the conversation?
