I like it when games use classical music

Nowt better then being a fatty middle aged English thug in Saints Row 2 blowing stuff up with the Classic channel playing - it saves the game to be honest!

Me too. Little King's Story's use of some pieces, particularly Rhapsody in Blue is borderline "insane criminal genius" levels.

Also, Jumbo Champloon has THE BEST. TRACK. EVER.

Use of classicals in games are best when tastefuly placed, or even used in a unique way, but when its used just because its open domain, that just cheapens the experience.

Parodius falls into the former category

Personally, I don't like it too much. I don't like the use of non-original music in games sometimes (including licensed music) but classical music is sometimes worse, because I've heard it sooo much while younger.

Parodius games are awesome because of all the classical music. Well, that and because they're awesome games in general.
I ctrl+F'd Parodius and am happy that it got at least one mention. :D I actually kinda like the music in this one, partially because of the energetic nature of the music and game, and it's kind of an experience, I guess.

EDIT: I guess, in general, I agree with the above poster.

Same here, I'd go on a limb and say the renditions of classical music in Parodius are actual parodies (duh) of the original pieces, what with the loud drums and slap bass lines that are usually added. Too bad the songs don't seem to be available on Youtube, I'd have thought the Parodius games were more popular than that.

I think many games could do well by drawing music from the classical repertoire that goes beyond tunes most people have heard e.g. Bolero. And yes, I am using classical to mean baroque + classical period + romantic + modern and I had no idea before this thread that this common usage bothered anyone. The classical period is in my mind not well enough defined for me to consider it the correct and sole referent of the phrase "classical music."

I'm surprised no one has mentioned the use of the Toccata and Fugue in D minor in Gyruss yet.

Also, City Connection uses a bit from Tchaikovsky's 1st piano concerto and Der Flohwalzer.

The old PC game Outcast used it really well.

Russian Symphony if I remember correctly, although to my own ignorance I am not sure how much was new and how much was old.

Edit: I am surprised more games don't use classical music as its public domain.

I enjoy it even though it's usually "greatest hits/local classical FM" pieces, nothing you shouldn't already be familiar with.

Yeah it's great until it gets stuck in your head. Curse you Lemmings!
I find it very hard to believe it took 17 posts for someone to mention Lemmings

Surprised my favorite use of classical music hasn't been mentioned yet. Beethoven's Symphony #5 in Dragon's Lair 2: Timewarp. It starts at the 5:05 mark on the youtube video. What I like about it is the gameplay is keyed to the music so it goes together. It's not like classical music playing on top of random gameplay. Particularly the part where the piano bursts through the roof. It's really well done and made me want to continue playing the game so I could hear more of the song.

Edit: Updated video link to a better version with proper music timing.
