I Love AMVs (Anime Music Videos)!

I like to use Many Lemon's Sail on as a trailer for one piece :P

Always found Sail On a bit overrated with some really great moments in it. At least it's not "This Is One Piece" though, blech.

Edit: Speaking of trailers there's two types for amvs. Parodies, ones that take existing trailers and edit an anime to them, and self-trailers, ones that are a trailer for the show itself.

This is one of my favorite of the parodies: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MEch_huw-eM

This is 100% true. And like most fanworks, the ratio of good:shit is like 10:90 lol

Glad to meet another creator! Sometimes when I get to talking about making vids people think I am insane, because I gush about metaphor and camera angles and motion and color and continuing motion and reoccurant themes/scenes and...yeah.

And fucking aspect ratio will always be the death of me I swear.,

AMVs really have ruined some things for me lol.

AMVs are bloody great OP, here's two of my favourite from the same series: Neon Genesis Evangelion.

No Love - Death Grips. For those unfamiliar with the group, they're an experimental hip hop trio that make left-field, abrasive music. This AMV takes the crazier, violent elements of the show for an incredibly raw experience. It's not for everyone but it's at least worth watching the first thirty seconds, probably the best opening to an AMV I've ever seen.

Touch - Daft Punk ft. Paul Williams More in line with traditional AMVs, this seven-minute rollercoaster takes a holistic look at Evangelion touching upon a particular motif which opens room for interpretations of theme. It masterfully combines the original show, the remake movies, and even the manga spanning virtually of the big, and quiet, moments of the franchise.

Also, shout out to The Boin who makes quality short-form AMVs as well as standard song-length vids. This channel stands out to me for using a diverse catalogue of anime and music, usually small-time or upcoming producers.

Ehhhh..
I'm still today hooked to amv..
There are some immortal Classic like..
Oh megami sama - shining collection
Rahxephon - euphoria
Nyan koi - my bitches
Dbz - kryptonite
Naruto - will of fire
Hellsing - mitternacht (!)
Lupin - smooth criminal (!)
Naruto - toushi ( as of now this is everything that was good with the initial arc of Naruto)
Maria holic - boxxed

And some recent ones that have a spot into my heart...
(Em rafflet en) karton - by zest (nsfw)
Exchange
Pop culture
Murder melody
Monogatari - orion
Into the labyrinth
Say huhu??
NigTHClub
Prelude to dreams (!)

And REALLY a lot more...
Sure amv arte not a fad anymore, but you still fine some REALLY solid amv around (my fav channel ia bestamvofalltime in YouTube, which is sadly in hiatus :/ )

I went to anime clubs in another lifetime, and they'd show AMVs before and in between shows. In general they were pretty cringe worthy. But the one that really stood out for me in terms of awful was one using a super-extended version of "The Final Countdown".

It's a cultural phenomenon that I try to forget exists.

OP, I'll raise you one that came out even earlier than yours and throw you a Jenova's Lullaby!

...man, I remember making my Youtube channel over 10 years ago and finding a whole bunch of AMV's before I knew what the abbreviation meant. I was hooked on them for a while. xD

Edit: Jesus christ, found a bunch of my videos in a warren of the internet and they're an absolute embarrassment. I'm never letting these see the light of day. I can't believe I thought these were good at one point.

All I know about AMVs is that half of the ones involving fighting have Linkin Park in them, which immediately makes me want to put my fist through my monitor.

The actual best, zero hyperbole

Porter Robinson and Madeon - Shelter (A-1 Pictures and Crunchyroll)

https://youtu.be/fzQ6gRAEoy0

But then again this is a real, official music video not something fan made

The animation is godly, and no lie I cry / tear up all the time to this day watching it. This is one of the most impressive pieces of Animation in general I've seen in quite a while.

Godlike.

It really helps that they got pro animation for it. But jesus, Madeon and Robinson put together the perfect song for an anime music video.

And Porter is a giant weeb, hehe.

I've maded a few of those in my time...idk why using movie maker was probably wjere it started going downhill, but still fun. Cringey to watch for sure because I narrated some even tho there was music

The ratio's worse imo. Even among experienced, competent editors, legitimately affecting videos are extraordinarily rare, at least for me. Comedy ones have a higher success rate imo, but legit outstanding action or drama videos are very, very rare.

I have been out of the loop for a long time though, but this was my experience a few years ago.

the most recent one I have seen that i liked was Ship happens

before that was anime 101

Those are my girlfriend's videos! I *may* have written a bit of that smutty fanfic featured in Ship Happens, but I'm not confirming that >.>

I do vids too, though lately I've been concentrating my creative time a bit more on my indie game. Here are some vids I did that were popular or I think are cool:

Fionn's Curse - Fate Zero AMV (music: D'Veritu Agage D'Bitu by Eluveitie)

Ultra Fighting Bros AMV - various sources (music: No Scared by One Ok Rock)

Derelict - From the New World / Shinsekai Yori AMV (Music: A Dream within a Dream vs Trifonic - Broken (Redrosid Mashup) by Glitch Mob))

Speedwagon Slamjam - Jojo's Bizzare Adventure AMV (Music: Good L_ck (Yo_'re F_cked) by Celldweller)

You're likely right. I follow a bunch of OG vidders, so my perception might be skewed. Even with them, there's only been a few times in my a video has emotionally effected me to the point of crying. Comedy is much easier today, what with all the editing tricks you can now pull.

This Space Dandy one is legit incredibly well edited and put together.

Yeah, I was gonna link to that one. One of the more recent ones with great editing that caught my eye.

Ship Happens is a fun one, yes.

Other relatively recent ones that caught my attention in terms of editing that I haven't seen linked to in the thread yet are:

Anime's Got Talent: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o-Qu8-ZGL14

A Salty Stick: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2oilFC-iB_U

Nice. Brings a tear to my eye. Used to love watching/making amvs. How I got into Sony Vegas.

Cool to see appreciation for amv's here. Surprised to see they're still popular too! Thousands and 100s of thousands of views I think on a lot of em.

I had my fill of them as a teenager, who can't forget how great linkin park goes with dbz.

Imagine dragons really works as well.
If I made AMVs I would really want to do a amv to imagine dragon's i bet my life

to the cell games of dbz :P

I know I took the path that you would never want for me
I know I let you down, didn't I?
So many sleepless nights where you were waiting up on me
Well I'm just a slave unto the night

scenes about goku not coming home

Now remember when I told you that's the last you'll see of me
Remember when I broke you down to tears
I know I took the path that you would never want for me
I gave you hell through all the years

scenes with goku sacrifcing himself

So I, I bet my life, I bet my life
I bet my life for you
I, I bet my life, I bet my life
I bet my life for you
gohan vs cell scenes

I've been around the world and never in my wildest dreams
Would I come running home to you
I've told a million lies but now I tell a single truth
There's you in everything I do

as if goku would ever come home for gohan :P

Don't tell me that I'm wrong
I've walked that road before
And left you on your own
And please believe them when they say
That it's left for yesterday
And the records that I've played
Please forgive me for all I've done
aka
I've left you before gohan, it will be okay, so forgive me :P

that's cool, they are really well done.

Haha thanks. It's so shit I'm usually embarrassed to claim it, but eh, I was young, the tech was bad, and I was a noob.

I won't link my current channel publicly, but if you want to see my more recent work, I'll pm you. Hilariously enough, my award winning video (the only one, with 10 vidding awards metaphor in motion and the like) is the least viewed serious one on the channel lol.

Yeah I'm interested in seeing more of your work, I getting the feeling like you're one of the early pioneers of that scene.

This thread has been really informative and fun. It's great to see people sharing videos they created and their favorite videos! It's fun nostalgic experience to delve back into these videos.

Alright.

Here's my story.

When I was 13, I was at a friend's house and we were glued to the screen watching trailer footage for upcoming action disappointment Final Fantasy 7: Advent Children. I was so into it I decided to make my very first and absolutely last AMV. I saw a Tool song on my friend's computer but the file didn't say the name. Instead, it said something like "0283828.mp3". You know, Limewire was a bitch like that sometimes.

So I spent a few hours making an Advent Children AMV without bothering to listen to the lyrics.

Somewhere on a hard drive in the middle of some Florida landfill there exists footage of Cloud and Sephiroth fighting to the death to the theme of Prison Sex.

I'd like to learn how to make AMVs for fun. To those who create them, what programs do you use?

You're going to give Kitase and Nomura a new idea for the remake.

Not one of the SUPER early pioneers, but I did learn everything I know from folks like Luminosity, who not only has a video in the Smithsonian and was featured in the New York post, but was the vidder that spoke on the floor of congress and succeeded in getting the video side of it legalized. The music side is still technically illegal, sadly.

My favorites:

Euphoria - koop (rahxephon AMV) - (fun fact, I used this music video as a presentation in English class, and BSed an explanation as to how it relates to a book I read. Got an A+, Some people spent days preparing elaborate dioramas. I just burned this onto a dvd the night before. LOL)

FLCL - Handlebars - Made by the editor of DBZ Abridged himself. KaiserNeko.
Aside from these, another one I just remembered.

Street Fighter Alpha - The Thing I Hate (NeoGohan)
