I love Fallout 3, will I like Oblivion?

It's worth a playthrough of the main quest, however, it doesn't compare well to Fallout 3.

Because of the procedural generation, all of the locales are much less interesting than those of Fallout 3. Exploration is just not fun. Plus, leveling system blows.

I would get it for PC for the mods after you beat the main quest vanilla.
 
I played Oblivion on the PC when it came out and I liked it at first but it quickly became boring to me, and I love fantasy games. I bought Fallout 3 when it came out, and loved it. F3 just seems a lot better and more interesting and I like the battle system as well and the pipboy. The atmosphere is also a lot better imo.
 
I'm one of the few that actually think Oblivion > Fallout 3; It's big, but too big like Morrowind...Has more to do than Fallout 3, more people to see, more loot to gather, and more room to explore. I think the graphics have held up rather well, especially in Shivering Isles, which is of itself better than Fallout 3 and maybe even better than the meat of Oblivion itself. Get Oblivion GOTY edition and as long as you can get use to the change in combat, and slower pace of the game you will love it.

The pip boy is basically the Oblivion menu screen reskinned. :lol
 
Modded Oblivion is awesome, since it fixes almost all the problems and gives a lot of customizations options. But Oblivion vanilla is pretty bad imho.

Fallout 3 Atmosphere/World > Oblivion Atmosphere/World
IMO of course.
 
I hated Fallout and loved Oblivion.

That is extremely ironic considering Fallout is more repetitive than Oblivion in terms of environment. (Exempting DLC).
 
Oblivion was complete and total garbage. This isn't even a matter of playing Fallout 3 first, it was just painful to look at, painful to listen to, and painful to play. If you have that much of a fix and haven't played it, try Morrowind instead. I only touched it for about an hour, but it looks like a vastly more interesting game.
 
Loooove oblivion. Just started playing again, coincidentally.
I enjoyed Fallout 3, but I much prefer Oblivion.

AND I CAN'T WAIT FOR BORDERLANDS

God damn you GAF! I came into this thread to say go for Oblivion despite the fact that Fallout 3 is more my cup of tea but now I'm considering getting f##$ing Borderlands!
 
I enjoyed Fallout 3 quite a bit and hated Oblivion, so the answer is "not necessarily". I'd go as far to say that liking Fallout 3 is completely useless as an indicator for whether you'll like Oblivion. The games are not as similar as people often assume.
 
I wouldn't bother with Oblivion on Xbox. PC is the only way to go. If your PC can't run it, upgrade, or I'd forget about it.

Mods really transform the game.

Oscuro's Oblivion Overhaul etc..
 
Whether or not you'll like Oblivion depends in large part on how much you enjoy medieval fantasy settings. Personally, I enjoyed Oblivion a lot more than Fallout 3's Mad Max-esque setting.

Not five times larger. They're of comparable size. I played 120 hours or so on Oblivion and completed all of the major, high quality sidequests and most of the others. I've played 50 hours in Fallout 3 and that's all been DLC/Main quest stuff, no serious sidequest stuff yet.

CO-OP + Fallout 3 Style Wastleland + COD4/Killzone 2 Quality Gunplay + Diablo Lootwhoring = Pure Win

I'm basically a Fallout 3 freak, and as a hardcore Fallout 3 freak I recommend Borderlands. It seems like a lot of people on the Official Borderlands forum are Fallout 3 fans.

If not, try it.

Anyway, both are good. I can never decide if I really love Oblivion or not. I think it lost a lot of appeal to me because the loot just wasn't that great. One of the reasons I loved Morrowind so much was because the constant effect stuff was so rare, but in Oblivion its everywhere. That coupled with the enemies leveling with you just made it bland to me.
 
The thing that made Oblivion A LOT more enjoyable for me was decreasing the difficulty slightly. It basically made the enemy scaling a mute point and I was able to get through things pretty easily without a lot of the frustration.
 
I absolutely loved Oblivion. Maybe you should give it a try.
 
I say play Oblivion. I initially hated Oblivion but loved Fallout 3 on release. A month ago I returned to my old oblivion save file and turned the difficulty down after being screwed over by the level scaling. Now I absolutely love the game, the combat still sucks but it's minimized now by the lowered difficulty and I love exploring the world. If you also have that sense of adventure like me you should play this game.
 
Well, I guess the game being 20 or so dollars right now with both the DLC included should be more than enough reason to test the game out. I feel like I got more than my money's worth after buying Fallout 3 at full price so if Oblivion does turn out to be at least as good as I hope it is, then it'll be worth it. I will be playing it on the 360 though, so we'll see.
 
I wouldn't suppose so. I'd suppose someone who likes Oblivion would like Fallout 3, though.
I personally dislike Oblivion and found Fallout 3 more tolerable.
 
I got Oblivion GOTY Edition for the PS3 in 2007 and played it for 50 hours before being bored to tears by the enemies constantly levelling with you. Well, at least they didn't have the Cliff Racers from Morrowind.

Some of the quests were really good, but the combat system and enemies levelling with you just killed it.

I'll be building a new PC in January/February and Fallout 3 GOTY is on my list. I already got the Platinum trophy on the PS3 version after spending 120 hours playing. Absolutely addictive game.

That's why it's not worth playing without mods IMO.

Like DF and MW, I bought Oblivion day one on PC and got into it until I started realizing the scaling, loot, and other flaws. The enemy scaling and no risk/reward spoiled it for me after I got over the initial graphics and open world awe. I put it back on the shelf until Oscuro released his mod. IMO it really takes an unplayable mess of an RPG to new heights. The mod hand places a lot of the encounters and loot, adds tons of content, feels a lot less generic, and more challenging.

(at least from my perspective as an old school WRPG PC gamer and former 1st and 2nd edition AD&D tabletop RPG gamer)

In terms of area, Oblivion is much larger than FO3. The content is more sparsely distributed, which is a good thing IMO. FO3 was ridiculously jam packed for a wasteland. It completely lost that empty oppressive feeling of the originals.

Mods fixed many of my fundamental issues with Oblivion and made it enjoyable to play. However, after FO3, I really don't think I'll buy the next Bethesda RPG on day one.
 
I liked Oblivion more then Fallout, so I say give it a try. It has its problems, but I spent over 120 hours in that world and could have easily spent another 80 if I was not distracted by newer games. They are similar games, but I think Oblivion is better in the end.
 
I generally enjoyed Oblivion until I walked in one too many of those red gates and felt like i must have already seen what the game was. I couldn't stand Fallout 3 or Morrowind. So yes?

also dunno if you still play fallout 3 but my mods post has pretty good ones in it
 
I asked myself the same question last month, and I found out it was NO. Biggest reason was that I miss VATS, combat is not interesting in Oblivion.
 
i really hope the next elder scrolls has some sorta vats like mode, it really does add a nice layer of strategy over mindless mashing the right trigger (yes I use my 360 pad on pc fallout 3).
 
Dunno if this has been asked, but I bought Fallout 3 from Steam a few months ago. If I buy the retail GotY version, can I install the DLC into the Steam version of the game? Or if I want the DLC through my Steam version, do I have to buy it from the GFW Marketplace?
 
Not sure if it helps but I loved Oblivion, however Fallout 3 bored the shit out of me.

Why do people keep saying this?, the only similarity I see is the wasteland type area.
 
I have Oblivion for 360 but never touched it (I know its a huge investment), but by he sounds of it, the PC version is so superior, that maybe I should just buy the PC version and leave my 360 version untouched. Are the differences so stark that I would want to waste money in this way? Can anyone give me a clear explanation as to why the PC version is so much better other than "mods"? I get that they would rid me of the world leveling with me system, but what else?

Combat isn't Fallout 3's strongest point, but at least it's a lot better than the combat in Oblivion. Imagine Fallout 3 without VATS and awesome guns.
 
Get Oblivion. You won't buy it at a high price and it's a great game. It's kewl to hate it around here but if you can love any Bethesda rpg you should be able to enjoy any of the others. Fallout was pretty hit or miss when it came to improving over Oblivion, somethings were better some were worse. edit: also get borderlands if that's in the running now, that game is fuckin dope

Never played w/ FCOM. I had OOO 1.3 with the loader and around 40-50 mods going. I ran some of the first unique landscape mod packages but my game was broken and corrupted and I had no interest in starting from scratch. I got hundreds of hours from it though. FO3 not so much. At first it ran fine and I got up to around level 10. Didn't play much like FO, but felt like a good sci fi TES game. Backed up my save, reformatted and then reinstalled windows and kept getting constant freezing and ctd. I tried the first patch and gave up.


I'm kind of waiting for an FCOM type mod for FO3. I have to admit, I don't like VATS, but I do like true turn based RPGs like the originals, TOEE, X-Com etc. I'll check out that link, is there anything comprehensive that enhance, plus fixes all aspects of vanilla FO3 ?

The balance of the combat felt off to me. But I had the same problems with vanilla Oblivion, so I have an open mind it could be made enjoyable.

However, Bethesda really needs to take a clue from Bioware and hire more voice acting and better writers. The writing and plot/lore has gone off a cliff since Daggerfall.
