I miss anime movies based on fighting games

While this thread is about movies I love like SF2 Animated movie, the Fatal Fury OVAs, Battle Arena Toshinden, and a few others, I would've had to make a post just like the one I quoted about Assassin's Fist. I just watched the Blu-ray version a few days ago again, and marveled at how much love, substance, and intelligence was put into it. Live-action probably will never achieve some of the amazing, memorable effects and fights animation or CGI can, but AF proves it doesn't necessarily need it to be great. Admittedly what made it great was Joey Ansah, AF's director and the actor who played Akuma, being such a fan of the franchise; not to say others don't care, but barely seems like they do.

While I too miss the great FG anime of yesteryear, the last one I've actually looked forward to was the 4 KOF Production IG animes, at least for their potential. A lack of enthusiasm for a lot of today's anime doesn't give me hope in me liking what they could attempt for an adaptation today. I want to be excited for whatever Chinese KOF anime is coming, but I'd like to see what they have in-mind with animation and such.

Personally, if we could get more like Assassin's Fist, I'll call that a worthwhile replacement for what was.

Great post. At this point, it's easily the most faithful live action adaptation of a video game imo.

I'm guessing the new anime will be based on the new KOFXIV story arc, it would also help promote the game this way.

It was what they did with KOF Another Day as well, which was mostly based on Maximum Impact.

Apparently China is involved, and China seems to love its KoF97 - I'd be very surprised if the plot didn't involve leading up to the events in that game, even if peppered with characters and plot points from more recent entries - newer characters like Alice, Gang-Il and Hein would be pretty easy to fit in that, for example, and the likes of the South America team and Ramon would be easy cameos to feature.

As much shitty as the Capcom cartoons are... there is a definite step-up in quality in Street Fighter season two. Slightly improved character art, more anime-esque style, and they integrated game stuff in the plot.

Fatal Fury is so good.

Just think, maybe after a few more seasons of a similar quality curve it could've ended up being actually watchable.

Those where abysmal from a KOF fan POV.

The mix of XI and MI2 elements was a bit of a mess, but it kinda required some KoF knowledge to understand thing like Iori's lack of flames or Rock's nightmare sequence - considering how short the episodes were and how any explanation of context was left out, not to mention the amount of characters to cover, it wasn't a bad effort.

I have a massive soft spot for the Virtua Fighter OVA, which is a series of character vignettes with no dialogue, overlaid with 90s jpop (including tracks by Takenobu Mitsuyoshi, composer on Virtua Fighter and Daytona among others during this period). The self contained stories and lack of dialogue makes it much more enjoyable than the awful attempts at narrative usually attached to fighting games.

Bump.

Just got the SF2 Animated Movie Collectors Edition on BluRay, and yeah, it's even better than I remembered.

it's easily the definitive way of experiencing this movie. It has every possible version of the movie you can think of that exists. The US Unrated English Dub with all the rock music you want (my personal favorite version), the UK Unrated English Dub (basically the same English dub but with even more swearing), The English Dub but with the original Japanese soundtrack, The original japanese dub which you can choose which version of character names you want in the subtitles options (is 'Claw' Vega or Balrog), and there's even the PG-13 version for those people that can't take the Chun Li shower scene.

It even has some crazy bonus features like the fmv game's cutscenes.

It's the Blade Runner 30th Anniversary Bluray for Street Fighter. Can't recommend it enough.
