I miss the WW2 shooters

WW2 shooters were last gen's sci-fi shooter of this gen. Don't miss em, I think the genre was done well last generation and they don't need to be rehashed. Maybe in the next gen, in 3 or 4 years, some new thought on the WW2 game will come out that'll be fresh.
Why doesn't CoD 2 count? Launch game?

To me, CoD2 felt like a PC-centric release in the age of the previous gen, that was ported over to the 360 to show that the 360 could make PC-authentic ports.

I still think it counts. But it also came out like 7 1/2 years ago.

I came to post this. I haven't played it much post launch, but it was incredibly fun. One of the buggiest games I've ever played as well.

The bugs have mainly been ironed out, and the games been massively optimised since launch, so it runs a lot better. The community isn't huge, but there's a choice of well populated 64-player servers at peak times, so finding a game isn't a problem.

We haven't really gotten a next gen WW2 shooter. CoD2 Doesn't count.
Despite your incorrect terminology (next gen, lol)...

Medal of Honour Airborne, Brothers in Arms: Hell's Highway and Red Orchestra fit your bill, check them out.

Red Orchestra 2 is awesome <3

I do like Battlefield 3 but I'd really really like a more simple, relaxed Battlefield game without all the heat seeking missiles, jets and a bazillion guns+attachments ... just 1942 HD remake or something next to the upcoming BF4.

At least the original 1942 is free on Origin now :) now remake it in Frostbite ...

How about a WW2 shooter with flashbacks to the Spanish Civil War and to World War I? Put in some airplane missions, some tank missions.

Also, World War II games should have the expansive theater they deserve - the war took place outside of Germany and France. Give me desperate Polish defenses of crumbling lines, brutal Soviet/German Eastern front battles, battles in the Alps, island hopping campaigns, the Nazi takeover of Scandinavia. Yeah, that'd be cool.

though maybe a little isolating to the rest of the world, a FPS set in colonial or wild west times would be pretty slick at the quality and production value of COD.... i'm pretty tired of space/future warfare or World War settings/styles... or hell just make a wizard/magic FPS...

but if i had to go back to conventional "war" i'll WW1 or WW2

Thread reminds me that RTCW was amazing. Even ran at 60fps on the OG xbox.

I would support a WWII theme resurgence.

I'd love a World War 2 Battlefield game with everything being destructible and amazing graphics.

(Though I'd want it on Steam)

Ya I was hoping BF4 would return to a WW2 setting. It would be amazing.

I really enjoyed COD: World at War. The over all atmosphere is much better.

I think the multi-player maps are definitely better then what is currently being offered.

Plus Gary Oldman does one of the voices.

I'm not really sure what there is left to do. It was a period of 5 years that has had basically ever major situation which could be videogame-ised already done.

how about an la noire style game where you have to go around and sit grieving families down in the living room (ala the interrogation scenes) and tell them their loved ones have passed away overseas.

edit: as below, there is also some combat scenarios yet to explore

The Russian front has been largely ignored, with the exception of Company of Heroes 2 and CoD: World at War. So has the war from the perspective of the British, and the frontlines in Africa. There's plenty to be explored.

I remember playing the Russians in COD2 as well - unless my memory has gone rotten - and the British in Africa during earlier CODs. Either 1, 2 or 3, I can't remember.

Allied Assault holds a special place in my heart, I played so much damn MP.

Didn't like the COD games set in ww2 as much.

Ugh no, I think we have enough about WW2 wuy not try something new, I liked the premise of Homefront, but sadly the game wasn't good

I guess I'm talking about a game that is solely dedicated to exploring those fronts. The CoD games have given us snippets, but I'd like a game where you follow one group of soldiers.

I'd like a futuristic World War II styled shooter. Futuristic weaponry in 1940s theatres. Could be a really interesting dynamic.

I'm ready to go back as well. BF1943 was the last good WWII game on consoles, and it was so barebones.

Unfortunately, the genre is sort of at odds with recent fps trends. I hope it comes back.

I'd like to see a WW2 or Cold War shooter set within the same character and storyline framework as Eternal Darkness, in where you play a different soldier from a different country fighting in a different battle: An American solider in Omaha; a Japanese solider in Nanking; a Russian solider fighting off Germans in Romania, etc.

I completely forgot about this:

I suppose now that Borderlands 2 is out and Colonial Marines is out in a few weeks, Gearbox might actually talk about the Furious Four now. I really want this to be Inglourious Basterds: The Game.

I wished they started making World War II action games based on parts of the war that aren't as well-known. The reason WWII shooters got boring wasn't because there were so many of them, but because they all focused on the same parts of the war: Africa, Italy, Stalingrad, Normandy, etc.

Why can't there be a WWII action game about partisans or the Filipino headhunters or something?

I want a really great Vietnam game. Last good one was Vietcong, in like 2003. Black ops had some decent Vietnam levels too tho i suppose. Im not including BF:V, cause as amazing as it was it was still MP only

this was sorta what classic call of duty was trying to do i think, unless you mean something different. but wow you're right there is a lot of mileage in that idea. how about a father in ww2 and then you play his son in vietnam? (different wars and not ww2, but it's the "following the lineage" eternal darkness idea)

I don't understand how literally 1/3 to 1/2 of every COD WW2 game is "snippets."

The problem you have with the Eastern front is that video games are not really a mature medium, and couldn't handle the terrible, historical nature of it. Which side would you be? The Germans who raped and killed their way across Russia, exterminating huge swaths as you went in a crusade to rid the world of the Jew-Bolsheviks, or the Soviets who after losing battles and hundreds of miles, finally turned it around, and began killing their way back?

That doesn't even get into the guerrilla warfare going on in German- and Soviet-occupied territories.

Video gamers seem to mostly want games where they can feel good about kapow kablamming their way through an action movie. Real war "games" are still something the medium isn't willing to do (even though I wish it would).

Medal of Honor: Allied Assault was (and still is) amazing. The sniping missions in the French town were brilliant.

Long game as well if I remember correctly.

you do sort of do that in Blops with Reznov in WW2, and Mason in Vietnam

aye, yeah forgot about that world at war connection.
i went on my own little imaginary tangent lol, but horror's idea of different ww2 perspectives would still be great i think.
