I need a MP3 player in a smartphone age.

My dear Galaxy S2 which I used as a MP3 player since I got my Note 3 recently died of a water-related issue, so I'm looking for a replacement, as I prefer a dedicated device for my music, my Note 3 is used for music only on some occasions. I like to put all of my music on it so I can listen to any song whenever I want (though I usually put a random playlist on)

I'm thinking of buying a Nokia Lumia 630 with a 64Gb µSD card and upgrade to a 128 one when it'll get cheaper. I could also use it as a backup phone/wifi device/etc.

What do you think of it ? Are there any other alternatives that are that cheap (approx. 150€ for the phone + 30€ for the 64gb card) that you know of and aren't Apple ? (I had an iPod classic and an iPhone, never again)

Thanks !

The lumia idea is a good one. I don't know that specific model, but I have a 520 that I bought as an MP3 player, and it works well. The only concern is that the syncing software is a little primitive.

Ow, there's a syncing software ? :/ I thought you could just drag'n'drop files onto the device and play them...

I always loved these:

They were sexy as fuck. Hell, they still look awesome. I also have an iPod mini that doesn't work because I stupidly perforated one of its cables when trying to replace its battery a few years ago :(

Moto E maybe? Has SD card slot and Android is a bit more developed than Windows Phone in terms of music streaming apps and alternative media players.

Buy a Sansa Clip+, pimp it with Rockbox and never look back.
Awesome value.

EDIT: you can get a refurbished one for under 30$

Are you interested in quality dedicated digital audio players, or just something on the cheap?

Besides the ipod, there's the Fiio X-3 and X-5, HiFiMan players (lots of models/options), and iBasso DX series of players. I'm sure there are more, but those are the ones I know about. But if you're not interested in being able to use lossless files and just want something that can play the mp3's you got off itunes and etc., without needing to spend much, then you're probably on the right track with the lumia.

Is the gapless playback on the Rockboxed Clip+ on-par with apple's?? I've heard this recommendation before for mp3, but I'm kinda picky about gapless since a lot of my music is full concerts (ROIO's).

I just have to ask.. Why do you have a MP3 player in a smartphone age? I can only think you want to conserve Battery, but it's not really relevant now these days.

I can't confirm it for the standard firmware, but on Rockbox the gapless playback is flawless.

I use a Zune HD in addition to my phone because I need more storage space. I also bought a Lumia 520 to use as an MP3 player, because I wanted a music player for my todder's room for lullabies and stuff.

I have an iPhone and an iPod because I can't store all my music on my iPhone.

I never got this thing with having two phones, with one for music. It boggles my mind quite frankly. I have a 16GB iPhone 5, with spotify, and space has never been an issue.

I had a Cowon D2+, which was an awesome mp3 player, but alas it had a rough drop from my hand (waist-height) and it didn't like it.
Also, the J3 isn't available anymore in my country so... :/

You can drag'n'drop :) I'm using an old 620 as an mp3 player and it works fine. I'd recommend a 520 over it due to the bigger screen though.
Cool !
How's the battery life on your 620 ?

I thought about the Moto E which has a sweet pricing too (115€ here), but unfortunately limited SD card memory (it accepts SD card up to 32Gb only) :(

I have a Clip Zip but its battery life is shitty, so I'm not sure I'd want to go with Sansa again.

The main criteria for me is space.
I loved being able to store listen lots of exotic formats and FLAC ones on my D2+, which I couldn't with my iPod classic.
I'm not an audiophile either, so that would be a waste on me.

Storage (I got a lot of music and FLAC too), battery life, convenience, off-the-grid listening to music (I don't have 4G reception everywhere -_-)

Don't know what to tell you. For other people space is an issue. I don't understand why that would boggle your mind.

I run out of space on my phone(32 gigs) just with apps and photos. Music would eat up even more of that.

If you want it to play music, either one will work fine, don't stress on it too much. Personally when I was on android, I didn't care for it's music playing option, but that was a long time ago.

Well now it's really a matter of choosing :

An android-phone (an OS I know well) with a 64gb card which would cost a total of 116€+34€ = 150€ (cheap !) but rather limited (can't change the battery, can't put a 128gb one)

versus

a Windows 8.1 phone that I don't know how to use which would cost a total of 148+34=182€ but you can change the battery and change for a 128gb later.

Decisions, decisions.

I've been using a sansa clip + with a 32gb micro sd card for around 3 years. No complaints. Battery lasts for like a week or more with fairly regular use. The player is super small and light as well and simple to navigate. I didn't bother installing rockbox or whatever on it but I hear that's pretty good too.

Windows Phone is extremely easy to use. You'd pick it up in minutes.

if you're going to go with the dedicated MP3 player, and you don't want an iPod touch, then go all the way. Colorfly c4.

Sansa Clip+.

Great audio quality, easy to use, expandable storage, and (best of all) so cheap that you can afford lose it without freaking out.

I have this one, it only has 4gb but it gets a lot of comments.

Another vote for the Sandisk Clip.

But I've gone ahead and just started using my phone full time. With a good case around it and keeping it in my pocket, I can now run with it.

You definitely can as long as your computer supports MTP. It works on Linux and Windows without a issue.

The Clip + is a good player too, it supports a lot of formats.

No you um dums. He wants a cell phone to act as MP3 player.

A used Android cell phone is indeed the best media player you can buy.

I have an iPod Classic (160 GB) that is going to fill up soon, does anyone know of any other options with more storage space? I download a ton of music, it is an addiction.

with that batteries life is quite mad movement to use your phone as a music player specially if you plan to go outside for a long time or saying things like use an used phone which I bet it has more than 400 recharges on its own.

BTW OP, if you don't mind, what exactly was your issue(s) with the Ipod Classic? I'm probably buying a player later this year to replace my old Zune. Leaning to FiiO X5, but the Ipod Classic is still on the list. Why should I not be considering it?

.

I still rock my iPod Classic for my 50gb of music. Flash memory has finally gotten cheap enough to replace it, but I kind of like not having phone calls and texts intruding while I'm jamming. Also, I like nit having to unlock my device and swiping to skip.

Get a Sandisk/Sansa Clip+/Clip Sport/Clip Zip
All can have custom rockbox software except the Sport, which I have, but the battery life and build is good.
