I need a new anime to watch!

Yeah, I'd have to say, out of those, go with Samurai Champloo.

Death Note.... I just gave up on after a few episodes. Did the same thing to the Manga. Dude, you have a notebook with which you can cause the death of anyone in the world... and still manage to fuck it up that badly? REALLY? Idiot.

NGE is alright, but god help you if you watch the ending. Don't do it. Trust me. Watch the movies instead. Much bettah. Oh, and after you watch this, you MUST watch Gurren Lagann to get the angst out.

Also suggested:
Bacanno!
Slayers
Noein
Grenadier (... ... what?)
Texhnolyze

Just started watching Texhnolyze, but I'm enjoying it quite a bit.

It seems you made the mistake of taking it seriously.

Eh, probably. At least the anime. Or was the manga supposed to be funny as well, because... eh. Just boring after <THE EVENT WHICH SPOILS THE ENTIRE SHOW/MANGA AND WOULD MAKE YOU WISH YOU COULD GO BACK EVEN THOUGH 99% OF THE PEOPLE HERE KNOW WHAT I'M TALKING ABOUT> happened.

... I don't like spoiler tags? =p

The anime was at least supposed to be somewhat humorous (dramatic writing!)... but still didn't keep my attention well enough.

You haven't seen bad fuckups until you've seen the infamous second arc.

This I can wholeheartedly agree.

Try watching Hajime no Ippo, it really is Great (thanks Ford Prefect). There's a new Nodame season.

too bad our opinions are direct opposite of each other :(

I think Hajime no Ippo is meh :(

So I just check and no one mentioned(at least I didn't see):

TRIGUN
Ronin Warriors
Outlaw Star
Gun Grave
Mai Hime
Rurouni Kenshi
Betterman
Monster
S-Cry-ed
Tenchi Muyo!

Monster, I know little about mind, but can't possibly fit the criteria I listed. Dunno if I can take your other suggestions seriously, now.

Trigun was shit, also.

And the NGE movie was waaaaay worse than episodes 25 and 26. Holy shit it was bad.

It's official, you know shit for anime. Seriously, saying Trigun was shit? Bleh.

What the heck do you consider good anime then?

And the movie was much, much better than 25,26. Those two episodes are an hour of my life I'd like back...

Gotta say if you hate Trigun, you have no taste.

What I consider good anime is posted in the OP. Which you apparently did not read?

And 25/26 were really out there but at least entertaining. The movie was not so much.

And you can't not have taste. It can be very bad or strange, but you do have it. :D

Well, your tag DOES fit then. Although I can't understand why you don't find Trigun "uplifiting".

Sure, it takes you down, but it also takes you right back up, higher than where you were.

Hammer peins has what to do with my taste in anime? O_o
It didn't take me anywhere but boredom land and man, these characters are uninteresting-ville.

Well clearly all the cock in your mouth has ruined your sense of taste. Period.

Check out Hayate the Combat Butler.

If you can say that with a straight face you did not watch Trigun.

Try Gantz, one of the strangest shows I have ever watched. Its one of those that can't be it WTF endings.

Eh, if you're gonna do Gantz, I'd say read the manga more than watch the anime.

Although that is decidedly NOT an "uplifting" story. At all.
Spoilers:
Oh, shit, everybody dies! Not really uplifting.

What does my tag have to do with the male genitalia? Unless you can't read and then how can I trust your opinion on anything?

Can anyone link me to that anime ranking thread, since I can't find it.

Is Full Metal Panic related to Full Metal Alchemist? Or are the names just a coincidence? I really found FMA to be epic and engaging. Are the three animes I'm interested in considered epic?

qcf x2 said:
Jeez, are those your only options? If so, I'd say Evangelion, provided you haven't seen a million animes already that deal with robots. I guess Death Note might intrigue you if you are in to facepalm-inducing quote-unquote "drama" that involves no action and a relatively silly plot. But it's pretty popular, so maybe I'm in the minority there (as with One Piece). But if you haven't watched some of the other mentioned series in this thread, give them a go.
The only reason I'm interested in those three is becuase my friends suggested them and they're short animes. I consider myself an anime newbie, as I've only watched Naruto, Bleach and FMA.

Samurai Champloo is by far the most entertaining and "complete" show of the lot, IMO (weird first episode, though).

Death Note is great for the first dozen episodes and goes downhill from there (never bothered to finish it). NE is one of the worst shows I've ever seen. Not a single interesting, let alone likable, character in the series. Dull action...no redeemable features I can think of.
I thought NE was considered good. Is Death Note that bad? My friends really liked it.

Seems like I'm leaning closer to Samurai Champloo, as the other two seem to be questionable.

PEINS converts to PENIS

Carry on for joke.

And, just out of interest, how does me not being able to read (which I can. I think. Last time I checked.) weigh in on my opinion on anime, a visual medium?

Two different series

Joke wasn't funny. I like funny things. See my selected anime!

And you can't trust anyone who can't read. They can't even see dogs. They just hear the barking.

eh, half my jokes aren't. Still, 50-50 works well enough.

Although I still question your taste in anime. Or maybe your taste in humor. Eh, to each their own. More or less.

And I trust nobody, anyways. Except for Friend Computer!

Definitely not uplifting but i think its worth a watch just for the WTF value.

I followed Cowboy Bebop on Adult Swim years ago and loved it; every episode.
It surprised me how it wasn't OMFG CUTIES WAH WAH COSPLAY YEEEEEE (sorry, that's what comes to mind when I think of anime).
It was a beautiful show with 3 dimensional characters, great music, and pretty deep for what it was. I'm really glad I stumbled across that show because it left an impression on me and is one of my favorite television series ever along with The Wire, LOST, and 24.

Is there anything remotely similar to Cowboy Bebop?

IMDB's 'Recommendations' list Gantz and FullMetal Alchemist. Are they up to par with Cowboy Bebop?

After a while I was just wondering if I was watching a hentai.

>_O

Decidedly a mixture of WTF, blood 'n gore, and such.

Best called "pornographic violence" maybe?

Hum. You basically want a good story, with good characters. Not necessarily the space aspect. Lesse:

Noein (complicated to explain. Half Slice of Life and half time travel stuff. Very fun and cool)
Ghost in the Shell (Series. Movies. Ect.)
Beserk (Dude, this DEFINES the "Crapsack World" TV Trope. Shitty worlds to live in are rated on a scale from 0 to Beserk. Characters are all well defined and excellent growth)
Trigun (Goofier than CB in the beginning, but both end up being equally serious)
Claymore (Again, excellent character growth and the like. Lotta "Women Power" in this one too, if you're fond of that)

Edit: Seriously, NOBODY posted after me? Dammit, made me double post. GAF is bein' slow at 1 AM...

Only thing I can think of recommending would be the original Macross saga.

LOL holy shit, i swear I asked my friend who recommended it to me if he was setting me up for a Hentai suprise.

Seriously though there are times where i was like this story was written by some sexually oppressed 16 year old who is living his out fantasies on a cartoon. then there were times I was like"i think i would say that in this situation" which left me with a love hat relationship to the show. All that said is definitely not forgettable but then again neither is the Goatse. Not comparing the two....

Cromatie high school wasn't really funny at all.

Nope, two completely different series.

This guy seems to have um questionable taste so he might end of not liking them, though they are two of my all time favorite espcially Akagi i understood nothing about mahjoong and i still loved every second of it.

damn dp.

Yeah, I knew nothing about mahjong and still thought it was completely amazing. I think that Kaiji was better while I was watching it, but after it was done it didn't stick with me like Akagi did. I still think about parts in Akagi today and go "damn, that was awesome". Not so with Kaiji, really. A few parts, sure. I'd have suggested One Outs as well (since it's also amazing), but it seemed like he was asking for completed series.

Why is gambling anime so good?

NE is considered a "classic" by a lot of people. I find that it embodies 90% of the things I don't like about anime.

Death Note had a lot of potential and an interesting premise as long as you didn't take it seriously. It never really fulfilled its promise, though (hardly unusual for an anime).

Of the three? Samurai Champloo is easily the best. Same director as Cowboy Bebop, if I remember correctly.

To be fair, this thread has spread out from just mentioning things you would like. Other people have asked.

So you don't really need to be quite such an asshole. Then again, maybe you like to be one.

Hell knows I sure do.

Penis.

Because it was necessary.

But my area of expertise is good anime, not shitty slice-of-life comedies. D:

Candy Boy, only 4 episodes have been released thus far and it has lesbian twincest.

Akagi as a character is just freaking incredible i don't think there is any other anime character that is as much of a monster as him his mastery of the game and the plays he made are things that completely amaze me even to this day, in fact i think i am going to rewatch this series.

Funny thing i tried getting a friend of mine to watch Akagi and the minute i told him it was about board he dismissed it complete i felt like punching him in the fae for being a tool but managed to refrain.

one outs is pretty damn good too though not quite Akagi or Kaiji level yet imo but i can totally see it getting there. Other than these are there any other notable gambling animes?

Alright, fine. They're good because of the masterfully crafted suspense in the tense psychological scenarios they present.

That really is the polar opposite of what you're asking for, but they're just so great.

Claymore is short. 26 eps I think. Darker than any of the animes you've seen or were suggested and still action packed unlike Death Note & NGE. Seems to me like your friends tried to suggest safe/popular choices to you rather than quality.

Ydahs said:

It's VERY good. I like it way more than FMA. Everyone likes Fumoffu (the second season). I think you should start with Fumoffu, because it's just side stories so you can familiarize with the characters (and zero robots, well, one robot that doesn't seem like one).

If you like it you can continue with the first season that is more serious and starts with the main plot line. Then third season that is very awesome, drama charged. If you like mechas you'll love this entire series. (Just for the record, I really don't like robots like gundam and all that things, but I really love this series, the characters are all win in it's purest form)
