How are the galaxy tabs for reading books and comics? I assume reading comics on less than 10" screen would be shit. The resolution is disappointing outside of the galaxy tab s

The Tab S 10.5 is one of, if not the, best comic book readers on the market.

Blows for regular books though, need a Kindle for that.

Anyone who buys a tablet as opposed to an e-reader, when solely reading books, is either misinformed or a fool.

$119, not $200. And it's about using the right tool for the job.

Or $79. Or $219.

If you can afford it and don't mind accumulating devices that quickly become outdated, using the right tool for the job is fine. Really though, is reading on an iPad Mini that horrible?

I agree the Kindle is better, and I have one. But it's not some insane, night and day difference. It's a little easier on the eyes and it's nice to not charge it often.

Well then you're not buying it solely to read books so you're talking about different things.

I think the only reason to consider a dedicated e-reader over a tablet is if the screen type is an issue to you. If you have issues reading off a tablet screen then of course e-ink is the way to go. For me I love reading books with my eink Kindle but the biggest issue for me is they're nightmare slow to navigate a large library.

Mind you the Kindle app on tablets needs some serious organisational upgrades

Kindles don't appear to be dating fast enough for that to become an argument. The PW2 is already extremely light, capable and has battery for yonks.

Reading on iPad isn't 'horrible', I've read entire books on iPad but having seen the light with the PW2 there's no way I could go back to reading books on iPad or even recommending it to others.

And that's what this thread is about.

I love my Sony ereader. I charge it maybe once a month.

I've got a Sony PRS-T3S coming in the mail hopefully tomorrow. Looking forward to it.
It weighs even less than my phone, yet has a bigger screen.
I think it's the lightest of the 6 inch readers.

I have a Kobo Glo and it's okay, although I would not recommend it if you have alternatives like the Kindle Paperwhite.

Here in Canada buying a Kindle is pointless as I can't use it with my local library's offerings, so I'm stuck with Kobo.

yea i am in Canada as well. kobo it is! which is the best version?

Mine is a PRS-T1. Couldn't be happier with it. E-ink fo life.

Since you're doing kobo you can get a cheap Android tablet for pdfs to compliment your e reader. I'd recommend nexus 7. I use mine for school work because I get so many pdfs.

It's like $50-$70. Like, you'll probably waste more in electricity and health and productivity loss lol

Cheapest Kindle is $80. Most expensive model is just shy of $300. Not sure how that translates to $50-$70.

Huh. Borrowing from my local library is a use case for my Kindle that I've just never considered.

You should check it out. I hadn't been to a library in years, but I moved about half a year ago and my apartment is a block away from a library. I started checking books out once in awhile, but was still buying Kindle books for the convenience. One day I checked out the selection of Kindle books at the library and was pretty shocked at the selection. I've been reading books that way since.

It does feel pretty weird to be on a waiting list to remotely check out a digital file.

So, here's a question: what about Manga/books?

I have a Kindle Paperwhite right now, but between the size and the resolution, it.... could be better, as far as Manga is concerned. I see the Kobo H2O, and that sounds nice, from the increase in size and the higher resolution, but is it actually *good* for reading Manga?

The Voyager is simply amazing. The e-ink screen is gentle on the eyes, which was a big plus for me. E-ink also means you get zero glare when using it out in the sun. It's like looking at an actual book page.

Then you've got the light capabilities which allow you to use it at night, but can be turned WAY down to almost nothing, so it's super gentle on your eyes.

So far I've transferred books to it 3 ways:

1. Downloaded an e-book series in .pdf and conveted them to .mobi, then transferred them using a USB cable.
2. Did the same as 1, only emailed them to my Voyager, where it automatically received and placed the books in the library within 2-3 minutes.
3. Downloaded a book series from Amazon.

It's just easy, attractive, and very, very easy on the eyes. Can't imagine a better e-reader than this.

Get a Paperwhite, it's all you need. You don't need a $200 Voyage, and I don't know why people recommend it. You might as well buy a tablet at that point.

You of all people know for a fact that shit is only out in china, so why are you putting it out there.

I have a basic Kindle, and its perfect for reading. My only complaints are that its not lit, so I cant read if the wife wants to sleep; and that comic books kinda suck on it. Still, the comics are completely serviceable.

As far a tablet, I would think any tablet would work fine as long as it can support Google Play or you can otherwise get the necessary apps on it (sideloading, etc.)

The wife has both an older Kindle with keyboard and Kindle Fire, she uses the Fire most often. Its Kindle's tablet.

I said solely.
I know, that's why I said specialized.

It's pretty hard to imagine someone owning a tablet and not occasionally using it for something else, even if they bought it primarily for reading. In the bizarre case where someone does buy a tablet and never once uses a single other feature, then yeah, I agree, they clearly should have bought an ereader.

Kindle Paperwhite is outstanding if you are only reading regular books. I got one about a year ago and as a result last year I read more books than I had the previous 4 or 5 years.

I bought one to read manga on and it's working extremely fine as well.

Anyone comparing a tablet to an e-ink reader clearly has never tried one or both.

I own a Paperwhite 2, and a Tab S 10.1, Nexus 7, and I've had a few Ipads and other tablets. Good try troll, now go away.

Could be coming stateside soon. If he is willing to wait it's a great option.
You sound angry. Maybe you need a break from the internet?
I'm surprised you didn't recommend him a N6, so that's progress at least.

I dunno if they still make them, but I got a Nook HD+ a couple years ago. Not quite as big as an iPad, it's still a bit bigger than most other tablets and really cheap.

While I do think a Kindle or the like is better for novels, for PDFs and comics, a tablet is the way to go.

I almost bought a Kobo aura today...does it support Amazon kindle? Cause my kindle backlog is massive! There is no point in buying an ebook reader if I can't access my kindle backlog :/

So paperwhite doesn't support epub
and Kobo doesn't support kindle? what about pdf;s?

this sucks!

Kindle will display PDFs, but especially if you want to take notes on them it's not really good at it.

Technically you can convert your kindle books into other formats using Calibre, but when I converted some iBooks to Kindle format they had some annoying formatting issues.

Unless there's something about the Kobo reader you just have to have, I'd stick with Kindles if you already own a bunch of books on the platform.

Kobo Mini is $60 Canadian, I was guessing it'd be cheaper in American.

edit: wow it's actually US and CA$50

You can convert Kindle into EPUB. Not sure about the other way around (with respect to libraries). You'll lose a few fancy features like "how long will it take to read this chapter", but the book is still there :P

I'd keep Paperwhite for regular books, and buy something like a nexus 7 for manga.

My Nexus 7 and Paperwhite have the most use out of anything I own. On Paperwhite I'm reading Game of Thrones currently, and on my Nexus 7 I'm reading comic books and manga from Comixology. The size is perfect for those two things.

The good thing about Nexus 7 is that it's relatively cheap. Plus you have access to the Google Play store if you want to do some other stuff.

Edit: I bought some Attack on Titan issues if you want to see examples of how it looks on the screen.

I have an iPad and I used to read on that until I decided to get an eBook reader, because it's not easy on the eyes and it's heavy after reading for a good amount of time. I was in the same spot as you OP and I've bought a Kindle Paperwhite 2.

Seriously, it's the best decision I made when switching from a tablet to a dedicated eBook reader. I have lots of Kindle books, PDFs, converted stuff and manga. If you need to make something work on a Kindle device, use Calibre (for books) and/or Kindle Comic Converter (Comics/Manga). So much fun to read books and especially manga on this thing.

Honestly, I can't recommend this device enough.

Why read on anything other than an ebook reader? You do get other functionalities with a tablet, but none that you don't already have on your laptop/phone/computer. An e-ink reader is the only option that makes sense, really.

Yeah, I've seen manga on tablets, but I much prefer the "look" of them on eReaders so much more, if they just had that little extra oomph.

I know you said you want android but I got a winbook for $45 at micro center and its nice having full windows. The thing isn't limited in any way when it comes to ebooks (or anything) because of that. Kindles are really easy on the eyes though.

I dont read manga...I need an ereader for epubs, pdf's and my amazon kindle collection.

Plenty of great advice in this thread:

Nah, 7" is too small for comics.
