I really love evangelion.

I'm pretty new to watching anime, but I'm struggling to actually get through Gurren Lagann, and it's mainly because the characters just aren't as interesting to me. Bebop has the characters to compete, but I find a lot of the episodes very boring in comparison, at least so far.

I just bought all the FMA/FMAB Blu-Rays today so I can't comment on it.

Once Bebop gets its arc coming to a close in the end, you're in for one hell of a ride

I love Evangelion. Even the rebuilds. Some of the story stuff is a little wonky, but they look incredible. I just hope someone eventually puts out a complete set of the original series on blu-ray here in America. I needs it.

Cowboy Bebop is probably still my favourite anime, but Eva is certainly up there.

This has to be a joke.

Something like Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood is better than NGE in literally every aspect. Far superior story, characters, pacing, thematic development, FAR superior ending, and by this point it even looks better.

Gurren Lagann - exact same deal.

Sorry man, can't relate to your opinion at all. I can easily see Eva as one of the greatest anime series of all time. I really enjoyed Code Gease, but that you hold it over Eva kinda baffles me. They weren't even close for me. Gurren Lagann didn't do shit for me, so all the hype of that series was just lost on me. Very hard for me to see it as better than Eva. Hell, the only Mecha show I found better than Eva personally is The 08th MS Team, my favorite Gundam series. Didn't finish Votoms, but that also felt up there. Eva really struck a cord with me, found the show downright amazing back in the day.

Biggest reason is that Eva's characters are just so, so bad. Lelouche wasn't the greatest protagonist in anime, but damn if he wasn't heads and shoulders above Shinji as a character. He's a much deeper, better-written character. Even though the show is kind of goofy at times, its cast just completely stomps Eva's cast.

The characters were pretty good in Code Gease, I did enjoy the cast a lot, but the characters in Eva were downright fascinating. So many mentally unstable characters, who are deranged in a way that actually felt grounded. At first you can't tell just how damaged some of these people are, but you start to notice it over time in way that felt pretty natural. I could relate to just about everyone on some level. Shinji is not a likable protag, but I still think he fit the role very well and is a good character. I found the cast of EVA to just be interesting to observe. As the show progressed, most of the main characters felt like fucking case study's out of a psychotherapy journal. EVAs are also just very cool "mecha" to me design wise. Them being essentially organic cyborgs felt very different, and the Angels are really awesome kaiju. The action sequences are just plain badass, and the fighting just feels brutal and visceral. That stuff brought me into the show hook line and sinker, and the character interactions locked me in. So I guess my feelings towards the show are pretty much the opposite of your own lol.

I always feel like I'm from an alternate dimension when people call this the best anime of all time. Anyways, I'll rewatch and see if my opinions have changed.

My reasons behind it, are simple.

I identify with Shinji a lot.
Its beautiful, and its all about suffering, which I love.

Yes, all of this is true. This is why I really wanted to like the show. It is a pretty amazing concept.

Extremely debatable points, but I'll aknowledge that Evangelion is easily beaten in the pacing department for a simple reason: Brotherhood is an adaptation of an already existing work. FMA manga lasted something like 7 years with its chapters being release monthly.

Now, while NGE is an established milestone in japanese animation (more specifically to anime TV series) due to his narrative, framing and character development, what does Brotherhood does more than it or the original material it's based on?

Cowboy Bebop is comparable for its similiar status as recognised by critica and its audience, and that's what sets them apart from the rest in a "greatest anime ever" discussion

FMA (aka the best "shonen manga" ever) and Gurren Lagann are super fuckin' good, no doubt on that... And I enjoyed these two way more than Cowboy Bebop!

Brotherhood actually had pretty poor pacing, I thought. The stuff that was covered in the first anime was incredibly rushed and then the show slowed to a crawl as it went on. A lot of the mid-late episodes were a chore to get through.

Eva is pretty good but doesn't hold a candle to Nadesico. Yurkia's engrish to Ruri ushering in the rori era in japanese anime. Nadesico ichiban!

I think I really need to watch the series again. It's been too long, and I watched pretty much the entire second half in one sitting so it's all blurred together in my mind into a single beautiful swirl of depression. I guess I should watch 3.33 first though? Save the best for last?

Here's some gifs. Sorry they're from Tumblr.

Ed and Al are so far beyond Shinji as characters you might as well be comparing Stephen Daedalus to Jake Sully. FMA:B is vastly better written as well.

You keep saying "good" and "bad" like they mean something on their own. Without further explanation, I have no idea how you are comparing them.

Saw all things evangelion during the last few weeks. Today I endend 3.33, opinions and feelings aside... that score. Holy Shit! I cannot compreend how I've never noticed how good it is.

Didn't liked the Rebuilds at start but In the end I feel I liked the Rs better than the show a, I'm actually hyped for what's to come.

I just watched the tv series and EoE a week ago for the first time. Dunno why it took me so damn long to watch this anime. It's freaking awesome

I love Evangelion. I think I am going to watch it again soon. Is there something I could read alongside watching it? I never read through all the stuff online. Anything people can recommend?
