I root for certain games to fail because I don't want more games like them

Why are moron journalists or industry people always making a surprised Pikachu face when gamers root for games they dislike to fail? Of course, you should want something you dislike to fail so you see less of it. What's so hard to understand?

We hate Sony doing GAAS because it comes at the expense of the better single-player games they used to deliver, so we want them to bomb for Sony to realize they're betting on the wrong horse and to give us back what we want. Same reason that many want COD to fail because they're fed up with bro shooters saturating the market and want talented devs to do something else. I haven't seen the next rumored God of War with Faye, but my opinion on it is already negative because I don't want God of War to be feminized. If it bombs, Sony and SSM will hopefully get the message and stop heading in that direction.

You want what you like to succeed to get more of it.

You want what you dislike to fail to get less of it.

Simple, right?

I don't like doing that. Just because I don't like something doesn't mean others feel the same way.

As much as I HATE roguelike or MP games, there many people who do….who am I to decide what someone should like and shouldn't like.

May Nintendo perish.

Based on the OP's arguments, wouldn't it make sense for Nintendo games you dislike to fail, so that they shift gears to a different style? Unless we think that Nintendo imploding would make room for a different player that does a better job, but I find this kind of dubious. If anyone wants to fulfill a role that people would rather play than Nintendo, they can do so at any time, without affecting the base that likes the current brand of Nintendo games. edit: Nintendo also self-bankrolls its games, it's not as if there will be more investor capital for other games instead if they bomb.

It's hard to understand because the market is big enough for everyone to get what they want and because no one has to play something they don't like.

Don't like CoD? No problem, don't play it. I haven't played one in over a decade. I don't even know what the latest one is. Their existence itself doesn't offend me and I would argue every time for their right to exist.

There's a difference between the free market having lots of sustainable genres, and switching primarily SP studios to chase trends and screw it up by being too late and too woke. Free market is fine. Let the cards fall where they will.

You would just be voicing your opinion which is 100% fine, and if other people have a problem with what you say about what you like or dislike then that's their problem, not yours.

We can't live our lives with our heads down and our mouths shut just because of fear of "oh if I do this maybe someone will get offended". And this goes beyond videogames.

OP needs to grow up.

I don't give two shits about racing games, but I know a lot of people really enjoy them so I'm happy they get made. Same with fighting games - I suck at them and generally don't find them to be enjoyable, but I know some people IRL who only play fighting games, go to EVO every year, etc. who would be devistated if they stopped being made.

Also it's hard to quantify that these games are being made at the expense of games I'd personally enjoy. Like what would Activision make with that Call of Duty talent that I would actually find interesting? I don't play FPS games.

No that that's fine i don't like actively hoping for a game to fail….if I don't like something I will criticize it and I just not buy it.

Sounds like you're indifferent to those games, not that you actively hate/dislike them.

The trick is to be indifferent to everything you don't like. Actively hating or disliking something means feeding that thing negative thoughts and emotions. This puts a toll on you that apparently results in creating threads on NeoGAF discussing why you want to take away someone else's toys. Let that shit go.

Sure, but this is at complete odds with OP's argument for why it's productive to root for something to fail, so it's taking the opportunity of his good argument to plug virtually the one situation it doesn't apply, lol.

Don't get me wrong Nintendo pisses me off all the time, but if they make even one great game/remake in a whole gen, they were better off existing to me than not, because there is no opportunity cost, such as misdirected VC capital. Basically the "stop having fun" meme, you lose nothing from this, unlike say Concorde. Given that they also provide the safe gaming space for kids, just let them do their thing and don't buy it.

For me it's half half.

Games I'm not into like racing, sport, most jrpg games and others I don't root for them to fail but I also won't feel sorry if they flop or go under.

But the abominable evil disgusting extreme woke crap like Veilguard, Relooted, Dustborn etc/games like them I definitely root to fail and glad to see so many of them already flopping cause those are completely upside down, evil, and twisted basically ideas that shouldn't exist in the first place. So for those garbage definitely want to them flop and thankfully it has many times already.

The same "gamers" I guess who decided to slaughter most immersive sim studios?

Yeah... naw. Fuck em. Tasteless fucking cunts. Probably too fucking hard to read or think for a minute a solution to get through the level. Fucking lemmings.

This. Absolutely this. Life is too short to waste your time to actively shit on something you don't like.

Fucking move on and do something you do like.

Yeah but you aren't the target audience, millions of people play CoD and will keep playing it.

Every game now seems a thought experiment to help you become a parent like a prescription to generic medicine.

Sounds like it puts much more of a "toll" on you than it does on me. There are things I'm positive towards, neutral towards, and negative towards. The final category has very few compared to the first two, but yes, I will actively dislike the things in that category because I want them gone.

I'm neutral towards racing games. More or less of them makes no difference to me.

I'm negative towards Sony GAAS. I want them to fail so Sony shifts its focus away from them. This is a sensible way to look at things rather than just being "indifferent",

And obviously, the OP presupposes it's about things you actually care about. If you don't care about something, then you're by nature indifferent and its fate is of no concern to you.

It really irks me when someone doesn't like a game and goes into a bunch of threads spreading misinformation about it or leaves drive-by shitpost or troll comments.

Especially when they do that in an OT. It's annoying AF 😠

Pretty much, it's not that hard, and I feel like people try to derail or remake the argument into something it isn't.

If it's a genre or type of game I never enjoyed at its core, then I am ambivalent to their failure.

I only care if it's developers whose content I used to enjoy producing worse consistently, devs that copy/paste a game template that is getting tired with no innovation, or types of games that treat their players like pay-pigs.

I hate on games that started its existence by killing possibility of good, based game.
If its some rando game from unknown studio i know didnt eat the breakfeast of other proper game i was hoping personaly for then i dont give a damn.

Good example is sony gaas initiative/bungie aquisition and all of its consequences- i hate on it hard coz we know that money could have been put to better use, aka high quality singleplayer blockbusters from back before tlou2, this gen we barely got anything of high quality from sony that doesnt push agenda.

If its for example pubg/fortnite so games from studios that i never hoped to make good game that appeals to me- i dont have any beef with those- not my genre but fk it, guys make truckloads on money, had talent and grit to succeed so more power to them.

Its same logic thats usually aplied to exclusives- if game was funded and would never happened w/o particular platform holder forking up cash in front for it- ofc its better it should exist, if its game beign paid to be timed or proper exclusive only for it to not be on some other platform but devstudio/publisher would greenlit it anyways- then obviously it sux and im not a fan of those(althoo i cant deny particular console creates more value for its owners that way aka incentives more buyers, so i understand why exclusives exist - and i usually fold in the end- what can u do, im weak man who likes to play high quality games, and if they are exclusives so be it :P ).

Also variety is good for both gamers and industry, every type of game should exist regardless how you feel about it.

Heck I will never be in to games like Mixtape but there are who do…so it should exist.

Sony killing days gone 2 and then greenlight stuff like concord or fair games make it really hard to not wish for their gaas phase demise.

Yes.

I hope there will never be another battle royale, MOBA or extraction shooter.

I pray that Naughty Dog, Blizzard, Bungie and Rockstar go under.

Also, Sony should exit the console business and go 3rd party.

The gaming industry should cater to ME and my tastes only.

Amen.

The neat thing is you don't need the permission of anyone in the industry to respond to what they produce in any (legal) way you see fit and you don't need to justify yourself to them either.

I don't like doing that. Just because I don't like something doesn't mean others feel the same way.

As much as I HATE roguelike or MP games, there many people who do….who am I to decide what someone should like and shouldn't like.
Personally, if I'm criticising a game or a book or a movie or whatever, or even if I'm arguing a point with someone, it's not really because I'm trying to convince other people to change their opinion. I'm just expressing myself, and that's it. Other people are free to spend their money and time however they like, and that's fine.

Yeah, this is how I am too. I rarely hate anything, I'm an optimist and I simply don't care or bother with the things I dislike, but I don't waste any energy or time actively hating or campaigning against stuff I dislike either. Life's too short for that. 😎

When it comes to games I vote with my wallet.

And it will likely correct itself after all the failures they had

Doesn't mean I have to become an activist and spend my time shitting on games I'll never play or wish the studio's closure.

You know the capitalist market regulates itself, right?

You know you don't need to open 2,000 threads about Marathon for it to fail?

The difference is the hatred that's sometimes directed not only at the game itself, but even at the people who work on it.

We have to remember that there are people at Bungie with families who feed their children with their jobs.

I don't support Marathon not because it's a Game as a Service (GaaS), but simply because I don't like it, and my way of supporting it is by not giving them my money. (You've just discovered how the free market works).

But I can't be against all GaaS games because that would be hypocritical.

I played Warzone during the pandemic, just like I played Helldivers 2.

Do I prefer Sony to make single-player games? Of course.

But what you see on social media, the hatred towards the people who work on a game, whether you like it or not, seems to me to cross an ethical line.

And those people who spew hatred toward those workers have my complete disdain.

Because it's not all about you? If you want less of a game, then go play other games. No one is making you play anything you don't want to.
